[AAA] Noivern [QC 1/2] Written

Overview

Noivern's excellent Speed stat allows outpace most of offense and makes it hard to force out offensively. Its Access to Boomburst allows it to become extremely threatening offensively with the use of Aerilate due to it allowing Noivern to deal heavy damage and bypass Substitute. A decent Dragon / Flying typing allows Noivern a few switch-in opportunities against the likes of Suicune while making it harder for Choice Scarf Victini to revenge kill it, while solid utility options in U-Turn and Switcheroo allow it to invalidate many defensive switchins. However, Noivern has difficulty defeating magearna, one of the most common Pokemon in the metagame, and falls just short of outspeeding crucial threats such as Tapu Koko and Weavile. Noivern is also mostly one dimensional, leaving it extremely predictable in set and play.

Moves

Boomburst is Noivern's most powerful attack and allows it to function as a special attacker. U-Turn allows Noivern to gain momentum on pokemon it forces out, bring in teammates on threats they defeat, and prevents Magearna from freely gaining momentum. Switcheroo cripples defensive answers, particularly Chansey, for the match. Flamethrower hits Steel-types such as Magearna and Doublade for super effective damage, but doesn't hit Magearna particularly hard; Draco Meteor may instead be used to hit Zapdos, Dragon types, and Rock Types for extra damage.

Set Details

252 Speed EVs and a Timid nature are used to make Noivern as fast as possible, allowing it to outpace offensive threats such as Thundurus, Zygarde-10, and Mega Metagross. 252 Special Attack EVs, alongside Choice Specs, Maximize Noivern's damage output. Aerilate turns Boomburst into a powerful Flying attack and gives Noivern its sole niche in Almost Any Ability.

Usage Tips

Bring Noivern in on revenge kills or with slow pivots such as Magearna and Zapdos, as it cannot readily switch in unless against the likes of Hippowdon. Firing off Boomburst is almost always Noivern’s best option, particularly when you dont know what the foe will do, as it is far and away noivern’s most powerful attack. Should the foe have a Magearna or a similarly solid switchin, it can often be advantageous to uturn out to a pokemon that forces that out instead. Be wary when using Switcheroo, as the damage drop is extremely noticable and you only have one shot at crippling Chansey. Be careful in using Flamethrower, as it can be setup bait for the likes of Zygarde, Tapu Fini, and Suicune and doesn't effectively deal with healthy Magearna.

Team Options

Magnet Pull users such as Victini pair well with Noivern, as they can trap and remove Magearna for it. In return, Noivern acts as an emergency ground switchin and deals with most Fire-type resistances. Magearna is a solid teammate, as it can handle threats such as Weavile and Tapu Koko while safely bringing in Noivern with Volt Switch; other Tapu Koko checks such as Choice Scarf Landorus-T and Ferrothorn are similarly handy. Noivern pairs well with physical attackers such as Garchomp, as it can bring them in on specially defensive Pokemon they force out such as Chansey and can handle the physical walls that give them issues. Answers to Ice-type Pokemon such as Weavile and Mamoswine are handy for Noivern; for this reason, Pokemon such as Tapu Fini and Buzzwole are solid teammates. Magma Storm Stallbreaker Heatran takes on Chansey, Magearna, and Alolan Muk, Noiverns most common checks, for it while also handling the bulky teams noivern has a worse matchup against. Entry Hazard setters such as Garchomp, Ferrothorn, and Golisopod are useful for wearing down Noivern's switchins.

Other Options

Focus Blast hits Tyranitar and Heatran but does nothing else relevant. Modest may be used for a bit of extra power, but the drop in speed is noticable and it gets no other relevant OHKOs.

Checks and Counters

Magearna: Magearna switches easily into all of Noiverns attacks and can proceed to OHKO it or gain momentum with Volt Switch. While it doesn't appreciate U-turn or Switcheroo, it hard walls Noivern regardless and is one of the most common pokemon in the Metagame.

Weavile: Weavile outspeeds and OHKOes Noivern, and can OHKO with pursuit as well. While Pursuit trapping does come with a risk and Weavile cannot switch in, it doesn't really need to do either, and the offensive teams that tend to runNoivern also have issues with Weavile.

Faster Pokemon: Faster Pokemon such as Tapu Koko, Choice Scarf Landorus-T, and Mega Alakazam all make Noivern much less effective by outspeeding and OHKOing it. Many priority users such as Entei and Lucario will also do something similar due to noivern's frailty.

Specially Defensive Walls: Specially Defensive Pokemon such as Zapdos, Chansey, and Alolan Muk can all freely switch into and take on Noivern, usually multiple times throughout the match, thereby curtailing its effectiveness.

* U-Turn allows Noivern to gain momentum on pokemon it forces out and bring in teammates on threats they defeat. useful for mag and such
* Switcheroo cripples defensive answers such as Chansey and Magearna for the match.
* Flamethrower hits Steel-types such as Magearna and Doublade for super effective damage. but still doesnt do a ton to mag
draco hits zapdos, tyranitar, etc
no reason to run flamethrower if you have magpull teammate

* Be wary when using switcheroo, as the damage drop is extremely noticable and you only have one shot at crippling the target. rlly only helpful for chansey
* Be careful in using Flamethrower, as it can be setup bait for the likes of Zygarde, Tapu Fini, and Suicune. doesnt even do that much to mag, uturn is better option unless mag is weak. pretty much just there for like doublade ig

answer to koko
* Entry Hazard setters such as Garchomp, Ferrothorn, and Golisopod are useful for wearing down Noivern's switchins. this should be after magpull
magma tran can beat chansey and magearna, the two common spd mons that can check noivern. also beats things like diancie zapdos

Other Options

* Heat Wave may be used over Flamethrower for a bit of extra power, but hits no notable KOes and the lower accuracy makes it unreliable. nah
* Draco Meteor may be used to hit Zapdos, Dragon types, and Rock Types for extra damage, but is generally less useful than the above options.
* Focus Blast hits Tyranitar and Heatran but does nothign else relevant.
