Almost Any Ability Resource Megathread
What is Almost Any Ability (AAA)?
As the name suggests, AAA allows your Pokemon to use almost any ability. It should be noted that AAA does not follow the OU banlist but has its own. Certain abilities and Pokemon have been banned from AAA to create a more balanced metagame. You can refer to the main thread for more info on the banlist or find out more about aaa and its banlist.

What should I use this thread for?
- Discussing the viability of Pokemon in the metagame and nominating them for ranks in the viability rankings
- Adding Pokemon to the role compendium
- Donating Sample teams

You should use the main metagame thread for:
- Discussing the AAA metagame
- Discussing sets you've had success with
- Bringing up potential suspects

Posting in the threads
In either thread, your posts should include proper justifications with examples from the AAA metagame.

When discussing a set in the ladder thread mention why and how it works in the current meta, what pokemon it beats/walls and what role it serves.

When nominating for the role compendium, specify what makes the specific pokemon worth a mention and why it does its job well. When nominating for a rank in viability rankings, specify why this pokemon should rise or fall based on its performance in the current metagame. When asking for a speed tier to be implemented, mention the pokemon's usage and why it's more relevant now. When "nominating" something to be implemented into the speed tier, please use the given format.

Penny saved is still a fucking penny
Okay, this thread's been kind of dead, so here's the first nomination ::

Unranked -> B+ (Tinted Lens Set)

Kyurem @ Choice Specs
Ability: Tinted Lens
EVs: 100 HP / 252 SpA / 156 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Ice Beam
- Draco Meteor
- Earth Power
- Focus Blast /Dragon Pulse

I have been interested in Kyurem for a while since it was super good back in ORAS. Since, with specs kyurem has more than enough natural power and with tinted lens spamming ice beam becomes so much easier specially during the time when people are running things like coil zygarde, tapu fini etc. Tinted Lens ensure it has no switch-ins on slower teams and against offensive teams whenever you get it in, due to its good natural bulk, something's going to die.
Though this set looks super good on paper, I am not promoting it even higher due to prevalence of stuff like AV Magearna and some regenvest vest users, all of whom are a 3hkoes and obviously chansey. But those can be easily circumvented by trapping methods and other than that plain and simple this thing doesn't have switch-ins. Other coverage depends on what else you want to hit.

Replay : http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7almostanyability-532184423 ( Shows how much kyurem + physical attacker pressurizes his slowish team, even though he had a chansey, blissey and regen vest muk-a)

Although the Kartana suspect is currently underway, I still wanted to go ahead and nom some stuff for now :

A -> A+
Been using Volcorona a lot on many of my more offensive builds and it usually makes itself to be the MVP of the game. This is mainly due to how well it can snowball with Quiver Dance alongside Fire + Grass + Ice coverage. The introduction of Firium Z also helps it break through its checkls such as Unaware Mandibuzz (who I will touch upon later), Specially Defensive Snorlax, and non-Unaware Chansey after a couple of boosts. Fire types are also very good offensively right now due to Hoopa-U and Snorlax's dominance necessitating Steel-types on many teams to handle them, in which Volcorona can just capitalize on this quite easily if they are not Flash Fire/Primordial Sea (which most of them are not besides Ferro rlly). While Magic Guard is still probably the best ability to be used on it due to it requiring minimal support to function, I also have been toying with Queenly Majesty and it just obliterates offense at +1. Volcorona is simply amazing right now and has only gotten better after the Keldeo ban imo.

252 SpA Volcarona Inferno Overdrive (185 BP) vs. 248 HP / 196+ SpD Mandibuzz: 243-286 (57.4 - 67.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+2 252 SpA Volcarona Inferno Overdrive (185 BP) vs. 4 HP / 252 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 316-373 (49.2 - 58%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Volcarona Inferno Overdrive (185 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Zapdos: 339-400 (88.5 - 104.4%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Inferno Overdrive (185 BP) vs. 252 HP / 176+ SpD Snorlax: 333-393 (63.5 - 75%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

A- -> A
Weavile is just so good on offensive teams and is a reliable check to many offensive threats right now due to Refrigerate Fake Out + Feint. Complimented with Dark STAB (mainly by spamming Knock Off), Weavile can easily cripple walls such as Skarmory, Toxapex, and Zapdos who rely on passive recovery items to check the most amount of threts they possibly can. Weavile also benefited from the Keldeo ban since it lost one of its main switchins on offensive teams, leaving there to be not much else to safely come in on it. Although it still is annoyed a lot by Magearna (which is legit everywhere rn), Weavile applies too much offensive pressure on any team archetype to be at A-, which is why I believe it should rise alongside threats such as Noivern and Landorus-T.

A -> A-
I have tried using Mandibuzz as a defensive pivot on some teams as of late, and it honestly just gets pressured by too much to be where it is currently. In a metagame where threats such as Terrakion, Magearna, Tyranitar, and Mamoswine dominate, Mandibuzz often falls short of performing its role as a check to all these common threats. Yes it is one of the better Hoopa-U and Mega Alakazam answers that we have right now, but I still feel it being pressured too easily (especially with that SR weakness) ontop of many threats in the upper ranks denting it warrants it to drop right now unfortunately.

Also here are some ability additions I would like to see added:
-> Mold Breaker
-> Technician
-> Intimidate
-> Magnet Pull
-> Thick Fat
-> Primordial Sea

Also agree with Kyurem nom. And dont forget to remove Keldeo and Dugtrio

Edit: Oh also I forgot, add Mega Mawile to A with Download as pre mega ability and I also think we can add Ash-Greninja and Diglett somwehere.

With Moltres as a defogger, you're forced to run Magic Guard, otherwise it would be a one-time defogger ;)
This means, that you can't run other better abilities. Zapdos has similar stats, but a much more useful typing, so that it can check common threats like Tapu Fini and isn't forced to run Magic Guard due to it having only a single rock weakness, so that it can run stuff like Unaware, Poison Heal, Magic Bounce or other useful abilities. It also has access to a fire-type move in Heat Wave.

If you want an offensive fire type, I recommend Volcarona, Charizard as sweepers, Entei with band or scarf and -ate eSpeed and Tinted Lens Victini as a wallbreaker, paired with a pokemon that can get rid of hazards, like Tapu Fini.

Just wondering, what is the set/purpose for Magearna to run Mold Breaker? Because I don't think I've ever seen it before.
I think mold breaker stops it from getting trapped by magnet pull users which prevents it to switch out
No, it does not. i'm not a fan of the set myself, but the idea is a stallbreaking cm set; pain split+mold breaker lets it beat Unaware chansey, while a steel typing blocks toxic.

The link to the sample teams page doesn't work. How do I fix this problem?
Unfortunately that website was run by scipinion who has dissapeared. Sample teams are on the main thread though, I changed the link to that.

Id just like to point put that beast boost should never be used over soul heart/moxie due to trace (especially for terrakion), which is actually relevant with mega zam.

Additionnally, while swift swim is put on volcanion, there is no weather setters indicated. sun/rain teams may not be great due to primal weather, i do think they deserve a bit more experimentation, especially since things like a-wak could rly benefit from sun. I'll try to experiment that myself, but just saying that the viability should be discussed.

Actually beast boost isn't used for the attack boost, it's mostly used for pseudo speed boost. Like for manaphy beast boost with timid nature boosts it's speed after a kill making it lethal against offensive teams. Similarly for terrak after some Ev alteration, beast boost is used so that it's speed increases again making it potent with +2 attack and +1 speed.
Also coming to setter there isn't any indicated since weather teams revolve around sweepers and setters are generally customized accord. to it, and since this is AAA there is basically no perfect setter, hell I've even seen someone use starmie as their drought user due to it getting spin. Though you are always welcome to discover new and reliable setters for all matchups and show them here.

I have played a bit of AAA in last month or so and the meta has certainly changed a bit, so here are some nominations based on my experience.

A- -> at least to A or A+
I never really liked weavile, till I actually started using it's adaptability set. The thing is weavile doesn't really need a stronger ice STAB, since most of the ice-weak targets are 4*weak to it, but what it really benefits from is by having a stronger dark STAB. Basically with weavile you threaten 75% of the meta while you just get walled by 25%, so what the adaptability set does is that it makes it an effective trapper, easily trapping frail mons it is supposed to threaten like volcarona, hoopa etc all of which are extremely relevant in the meta, and bother balanced teams a lot. I was never a big fan of refrigerate set, but this set really pushes it a tier above imo. Also immunity to prankster is pretty cool too, avoiding prankster will-o-wisps and stuff.

and

Both to B
Bluntly suicune is just outclassed badly by tapu fini, which is just so spam-able on teams. Any Calm Mind set that suicune might want to run, it just run better by Fini, due to Fighting Resistance, Dark Resistance and accest to Taunt.
Now, lax is just another story, it isn't necessarily bad, but right now fighting types are just prevalent in the meta, Terrakion being the biggest culprit. I am saying this from experience, since meta-game is really offensive right now and notable power creep from last generation with stuff like Hoopa allowed, it barely gets the chance to set-up. Also Gale Wings no longer being a thing hurts it's usage a lot.

To A+
Solid flying resists are hard to find outside magearna and zapdos, and a team can easily be customized to counter both of them. Noivern just threatens so much of the meta, feeding on common balanced teams and is one of the rare special attackers being able to 3hko every regen-vester. There are literally 3 relevant mons which outspeed it outside of scarfers, and pretty much shits over ever so common web teams.

Also, some more stuff that could be added ::
  • Buzzwole -> Tinted : Offensive Buzz is a great lure with it's meaty attack stat and making a joke of common switch-ins like fini, allowing weavile etc. to go rampant.
  • Magearna -> Levitate : Never a big fan of abilities that give type immunity, but levitate magearna is just superb counter to all ground types not named zygarde, easily luring and denting every one of them. Yeah it does miss regenerator but a Ubers like set volt switch/fleur cannon/pain split/heart swap still makes it a good special wall when invested.

Unless other people push I'm not moving Weavile. The two most common def mons (fini and mag) hardwall it. Cune can drop, I dont feel like Lax needs to move tht far; I don't think Lax is less viable, rather, people just aren't using it (like Tyranitar), but I'll drop to A-. Noivern can go A+ unless anyone argues. I'll leave this for a couple days in case anyone has anything to say

Not exactly sure if Weavile should move up as Mag, Fini, Buzz are very common, but besides those three mons and some other stuff like Skarm, but Weavile threatens everything else basically. If anything it should be A. I definitely agree Adaptability is better than Refrigerate and I think it should be listed before it on the VR.
Cune should definitely drop, the only time I actually think about using it over Fini is for roar on teams with spikes, but Snorlax should probably stay A- or something.
I am also a strong advocate of Levitate Magearna, I have been using it a lot and it works wonders.

Probably I wrote it wrong or something, but seems like you misunderstood my nomination for weavile. I myself wrote there that it gets walled by 25% of the meta, but what it does specifically with it's adaptability set is that it becomes best pursuit trapper in the meta. Weavile isn't supposed to hit fini/magearna at all( even tho magearna doesn't appreciate losing it's AV), it is meant to come on stuff like Hoopa-U, Noivern, Unboosted Volcarona and easily eliminating them since like no one uses pursuit and if people know your set you can still play 50-50s, and knock off is never a bad move to spam. And this is a quality extremely appreciated by plenty of teams and half of these mons plainly don't have a switch-in.
Yeah maybe A+ is a bit too much, but if it is able to damage the things it threatens imo it certainly deserves A.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7almostanyability-584044876 :: Look at this replay, yeah magearna can handle noivern, but it certainly doesn't handle both noivern and hypno-gar. This is where weavile comes in, after scouting his gengar set, it absolutely traps whatever it wanted to.
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7almostanyability-583778728 :: Another team comprised of balance breakers.
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7almostanyability-583731630 :: Again desolate island volcarona destroyed my team, so after initially bluffing weavile again easily eliminates that thing, opening up the victory for me.

Got some more noms after playing again for the suspect test (still didn't get reqs thanks to mlove sniping me 24/7)

A -> A+
One of the best mons in the meta, its typing is simply fantastic in terms of checking a wide array of threats including and not limited to Mega Alakazam, Noivern, Thundurus, Tapu Fini, Manaphy, even Desolate Land Volcrorona before a set up boost. Extremely splashable as it can fit on the a majority of balance teams and is almost required on stall teams due to how much its blanket checks in one slot. I have also seen offensive sets with CB and Adaptability actually put in work as well since AloMuk can prevent Fairy-types from coming in on Knock Off thanks to the threat of its Poison-type attacks. It never dies and it can apply a lot of pressure due to item removal + poison thanks to Poison Jab.

A- -> A
Yes Magearna walls it, but it still does not stop Weavile from being one of the most hardest mons to come into in the metagame mainly thanks to its incredible STAB coverage. Adaptability has actually been my preffered set as of late, letting it able to dent checks that would otherwise give it a hard time such as non-Intimidate Buzzwole, Magearna, and even Tapu Fini before it gets its Toxic Orb activated. Also Refrigerate sets are still good as always. Weavile is just insanely fast and powerful and is one of the prime offensive threats in the current meta to be ranked any lower then A.

A -> A-
Not as good as it used to be mainly thanks to the prevalence of Alolan Muk and Magearna everywhere. While it can still be devistating under PsyTerrain and even Trace can help it when copying abilities such as Regenerator and Adaptability, Mega Alakazam's hard checks are just too common and viable atm for it to be ranked so high. The introduction of new megas also gives it a bit more competition for a team slot as well.

A- -> A
I've seen this thing everywhere on the suspect ladder and for good reason. Both Triage and Primordial Sea sets amp up Golisopod's capability to threaten offensive and defensive teams alike thanks to the great natural power it already possesses. Its wide array of priority options on top of its solid bulk allows it to setup many times throughout a game and makes it quite difficult to revenge kill, especially if its Triage. Its typing also enables it to check prominent threats such as Mamoswine and Zygarde as well, making it easier for it to come in in many cases.

A- -> B+
I know I nommed it to drop last time but I tried making Mandibuzz work again and I simply cannot see it being ranked alongside threats such as Doublade and Gengar. It s typing is nice, but again it gets threatened by the most common mon in the metagame (in Magearna) and fails to check a slew of offensive threats given how popular Ice-, Electric- and Fairy-coverage is right now. Being weak to Stealth Rocks also means it really struggles to switchin and live another hit unless its Poison Heal. The combination of Zapdos + Alolan Muk really outclasses it in most regards.

B- -> B+
A really good bulky pivot that can provide a lot of utility through either Defog support, setting up entry hazards, or just being a great stallbreaker through its Mold Breaker taunt set. DoubleDance sets with Genesis Supernova and Sheer Force or No Guard have also been putting in a lot of work for me, allowing it to sweep lategame once its checks have been weakened.

New Mons:
-> B (Water Absorb, Levitate, Tinted Lens)
Water Absorb sets (s/o to Lax and Jrdn) with Steath Rocks and Toxic Spikes is good at constantly setting up and keeping hazards on the field thanks to Nihilego's ability to threaten out the majority of hazard removers such as Tapu Fini, Zapdos, and Skarmory. It does not appreciate Magic Bounce users, but it can still apply a lot of pressure versus them thanks to its STAB moves alone. Specs Tinted Lens sets also works wonders, catching checks such as Ferrothorn and Zygarde by surprise.

-> A- (Download, Electric Terrain -> Magic Bounce)
Mega Diancie is a pretty good mega option that can be placed on offensive teams, applying a lot of pressure due to its great mixed wallbreaking potential. It hates facing Magearna and Alolan Muk everywhere, but can still put in a lot of work once the aforementioned checks have been weakened enough. Nature Power sets with Terrain support are also good at catching stuff like Celesteela and Toxapex off guard too which is nice.

-> A (Stance Change, Regenerator)
Aegislash is still good as ever as it once was in ORAS, being a great wallbreaker thanks to its amazing offenses when in Blade Form. Defensive Regenerator sets also work as well, trading Doublade's power and set up opportunity for better mixed bulk and useful utility moves such as King's Shield.

Also agree with the rest of Geerat's changes.

Weavile should be A cause of the things it does vs ho. It's shit when it comes to breaking walls

I would say Weavile should be around S- or A+ at least, it traps and removes more than half of offensive 'mons. Stuff like Victini dies to BP 40 Pursuit (Choice Band + Adaptability) so basically it gets exactly one chance to use V-create over the entire match. Stuff like Nihilego, Noivern, or other fail threats that are slower than Weavile (which boasts top speed tier). It is not like Weavile is that useless against balance or anyting, because the only two safe switch-ins are Tapu Fini and Magearna; the former, if Poison Heal, has to be poisoned beforehand while the latter will be forced to take hit for the team and lose its Assault Vest. While I believe it should be banned from the metagame, I will nominate it to the higher rank than Isotonex has mentioned due to the amount of threats it traps.

Fini, mage, bulky manaphy, buzzwole and most skarms are ALL reliable switchins to weavile and they happend to be A+. S- is way too high for it..i wouldnt even say A but that would be like the borderline. it might mess up some offences, but Balance is dominating the tier atm..just look at all the bulky mons chillin at A+ and Mage. Personally, none of my offences are that weak to weavile so idk why everyone is hyping it up...but imma go with the flow

I agree many checks exist for Weavile. However the reason why I would say Weavile deserves that high rank is because of the matchup situation it makes against Ghost- and Psychic-types. Most of them, barring the likes of Victini (which is OHKO'd by BP 40 Choice Band Adapt Pursuit after a single defense drop followed by V-create) and others are not viable due to them being revenge killed easily. I can witness how many frail targets even besides Ghost and Psychic types are commonly trapped and removed by Weavile.

I believe this is similar to how Tyranitar still has high rank in OU despite the new 'mons introduced in SM generation mostly beating Tyranitar; it has a very near-exclusive access to being a Pursuit trapper (besides rare and less viable lolan Muk) that can handle the likes of Latios and Gengar. Likewise, Weavile is the strongest Pursuit trapper in AAA at this point that is not only capable of threatening Ghost and Psychic types but is able to Pursuit trapping most offensive threats with its sheer power, OHKOing uninvested Landorus-T (guaranteed OHKO after rocks). Even if there are myriad of switch-ins available for Weavile, it still fulfills its role by basically trapping and killing everything. I can confidently say at least a council member or two can prove this point valid.
