UU Amoonguss

[OVERVIEW]

Amoonguss's good defensive typing and mixed bulk make it a reliable defensive pivot. Key resistances to Grass, Electric, Water, Fairy, and Fighting enable it to check a large number of threats such as Primarina, Mega Blastoise, Mega Swampert, and Mega Sceptile, giving it a place on many balanced and bulky offensive teams. Amoonguss is able to do this reliably because of Regenerator, which gives it one-third of its maximum health upon switching out, making it hard to wear down. Another fantastic trait of Amoonguss is Spore, which lets it inflict guaranteed sleep on non-Grass-types. Despite Amoonguss's strengths, however, it possesses crippling weaknesses to Ice, Fire, Psychic, and Flying, which is amplified by the strong presence of Pokemon such as Mega Aerodactyl, Mamoswine, Mega Pidgeot, and Latias. Amoonguss is also very passive because of its pitiful Speed stat and low offenses, which can make it setup fodder after Spore's been used.

Moves
========

Spore is one of the main reasons to use Amoonguss, putting anything that isn't a Grass-type to sleep. Giga Drain is a consistent STAB move that also gets Amoonguss some health back. Hidden Power Fire is used to hit Steel-types such as Scizor and Cobalion, which otherwise completely wall Amoonguss. Clear Smog is used in the final slot to remove stat boosts from Pokemon such as Gliscor and Conkeldurr that might try using Amoonguss as setup fodder. Stun Spore can be used to paralyze an unsuspecting foe that thinks it's safe after Spore's been used. Another option is Foul Play, which can hit Pokemon such as Mega Beedrill and Mega Aerodactyl pretty hard. Finally, Sludge Bomb can be run to hit Celebi and Togekiss for decent damage, both of which otherwise use Amoonguss as setup fodder, as well as letting Amoonguss actually beat Mega Sceptile.

Set Details
========

252 HP EVs and 72 Special Defense EVs, in conjunction with a Calm nature, allow Amoonguss to avoid the OHKO after Stealth Rock from Primarina's Psychic. The remaining EVs are placed in Defense to allow Amoonguss to take physical attacks more easily. Black Sludge is used for additional passive recovery. Regenerator allows Amoonguss to consistently check special attackers such as Primarina and Mega Blastoise.

Usage Tips
========

Switch Amoonguss into the Pokemon that it checks, such as Primarina, Mega Blastoise, and Mega Sceptile, but be wary of coverage options such as Psychic and Ice Beam. Spore is often a good move to go for to put an opposing Pokemon to sleep, but refrain from using it too early on so that you can put something more important to sleep later. Utilize Regenerator a lot so that you keep Amoonguss as high on health as possible, because Amoonguss needs to be at high HP to check Primarina, Mega Blastoise, and Raikou.

Team Options
========

Water-types such as Alomomola, Slowbro, Swampert, Suicune, and Volcanion work well with Amoonguss, as they can check Fire-types while Amoonguss checks Grass- and Electric-types. Alomomola and Slowbro form a solid Regenerator core with Amoonguss, as their high Defense stat makes up for Amoonguss's lower Defense stat. Additionally, all of these Pokemon can check Gliscor, which otherwise sets up on Amoonguss for free. Entry hazard removers such as Latias and Scizor are also appreciated, as not having to take the chip damage is ideal to handle the special attackers that Amoonguss checks. Latias and Starmie make for good picks, as they both resist Fire. Pursuit trappers such as Scizor, Krookodile, and Metagross can make for good teammates, as they can remove the Psychic-types that threaten Amoonguss. Pokemon that appreciate the setup opportunities that Amoonguss gives with Spore, such as Swords Dance Mega Absol, Calm Mind Latias, Substitute Buzzwole, and Swords Dance Terrakion, pair well with it. Steel-types such as Cobalion, Scizor, and Klefki can also patch up Amoonguss's Ice and Psychic weaknesses, but they do share a weakness in Fire. If running Stun Spore, teammates that appreciate Latias being paralyzed, such as Buzzwole, Conkeldurr, and Nidoking, make for good teammates.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Seed Bomb is an option to get past Calm Mind users such as Raikou that would otherwise use Amoonguss as setup fodder. Synthesis is also an option for reliable recovery on teams that are particularly weak to Primarina and want Amoonguss to always be able to answer it. Eject Button is an option, alongside Magneton, to trap and eliminate Scizor while giving Pokemon such as Conkeldurr and Mega Absol free switches.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fire-types**: Fire-types such as Volcanion, Infernape, and Entei don't care much about any of Amoonguss's attacks and can hit it very hard with super effective (RH) (remove comment) Fire-type moves, but none can switch into Spore without being put to sleep.

**Psychic-types**: Latias, Reuniclus, and Celebi don't care much for what Amoonguss can go for, with the exception of Sludge Bomb in Celebi's case (RP) and Spore in Latias's and Reuniclus's case.

**Flying-types**: Mega Aerodactyl, Mega Pidgeot, Crobat, and Togekiss can all force Amoonguss out with super effective Flying-type moves, but Togekiss doesn't like Sludge Bomb, and all can be hit by Spore. Mandibuzz gets a special mention, as it's immune to Spore thanks to Overcoat and takes very little from any other move Amoonguss can go for.

**Strong Wallbreakers**: Strong wallbreakers such as Choice Band Terrakion, Choice Specs Hydreigon, Mamoswine, Conkeldurr, and Buzzwole can do huge damage to Amoonguss. In particular, Buzzwole can set up Substitute against Amoonguss to dodge Spore.

**Setup Sweepers**: Gliscor is one of the biggest threats to Amoonguss, taking practically nothing from Amoonguss's moves and setting up on it for free, but Clear Smog does help with this. Cobalion is immune to Clear Smog, takes little from Hidden Power Fire, and can do huge damage back with a boosted Iron Head. Other setup sweepers like Calm Mind Latias and Calm Mind Raikou can use Amoonguss as setup fodder, particularly Raikou, which can avoid Spore with Substitute; however, Cobalion and Latias can be hit with Spore.

Set
  • I'd honestly just leave the set as Giga Drain / Spore / Hidden Power Fire / Clear Smog and mention Stun Spore, Sludge Bomb, and Foul Play in Moves. Other QC members can give input on this, but I don't like slashing it when those moves could probably fit anywhere if your team can afford it.
Moves
  • Give examples of main Giga Drain targets; Water-types like Primarina, Ground-types like Krookodile perhaps would fit well.
  • Examples of main Clear Smog targets
  • Examples of Stun Spore targets, but remove the part about it being complete setup fodder for Gliscor and Raikou, since 1) you're not slashing it with Clear Smog anymore, and 2) Gliscor and Raikou (if it's SubCM) can still be incredibly annoying for Amoonguss to deal with even with Clear Smog.
  • Remove the "final" from the Sludge Bomb line just because again, I'd rather not slash it like that. All of Amoonguss's current moves are important enough imo.
Usage Tips
  • Put the last line before the third line. In the line about using Regenerator, mention specifically about utilizing it after pivoting into threats. This makes the last line about being healthy enough to check Primarina and Blastoise more relevant. Also "high on health"; it's a GP thing, but this does not at all mean what you want it to, so rephrase it.
Team Options
  • Add stuff like Mega Blastoise and Hydreigon as teammates, since they both appreciate stuff like Primarina being crippled or weakened.
Other Options
  • Mention Synthesis as an option for reliable recovery without relying on Regenerator, which is useful for teams that are particularly weak to Primarina.
  • Remove Toxic imo. Not sold on it as a legitimate option, since it's really niche; Mega Aerodactyl is better off being crippled by Stun Spore or Spore, or even just hit with Giga Drain or Foul Play. I can see it working with Latias, specifically CM Latias, I suppose, but even then, the appeal isn't that great.

Hi.

Overview
  • I'd mention what teams Amoonguss is best on.
Defensive Pivot

Usage Tips

  • For the first bullet point, I'd mention to be wary of coverage or utility moves the Pokemon listed may possess such as Psychic, Substitute or Hyper Beam, and Ice Beam, respectively.
  • I feel like the last two bullet points could definitely be compressed into one; something like "Utilize Regenerator to keep Amoonguss as healthy as possible, especially if it's needed to check threats such as Blastoise and Primarina." Also using more examples would be nice btw, doesn't always have to be Toise and Prima lol, it'd give readers a better idea of what Amoonguss checks as well.
Checks and Counters
  • I'd change "Strong Special Wallbreakers" to "Strong Wallbreakers"; the physical ones still break Amoonguss, like Mamoswine, Conkeldurr, Buzzwole.
  • For "Setup Sweepers" I'd definitely group Gliscor differently than the rest as it's naturally immune to Spore after Toxic Orb activates, but the rest are still potentially susceptible to Spore so I'd group them together then say "but they can only use Amoonguss as setup fodder after Spore is used" or something along those lines. Just an example sentence that's probably bad so don't follow it lol.

Regarding Gliscor I didn't mean to make another section for it. Just mention it before the rest in the setup sweepers category then proceeded by the others. Sorry if I wasn't clear the first time. Also, regarding the wallbreakers section if more elaboration could be given towards the Pokemon mentioned that'd be nice, for example I think Buzzwole at least needs mention of commonly carrying Substitute which avoids Spore.

Great job. For the Sludge Bomb line under Moves, add that it also lets it beat Mega Sceptile which 1v1s you otherwise. Also in Team Options, add partners like Conk, Buzzwole, and Nidoking that love stuff like Latias being paralyzed with Stun Spore.

Also, add Eject Button to Other Options, which works well with Magneton to trap Scizor, and can also get stuff like Conk in safely woth a free switch.

QC 3/3 nice work
