- Perish Song is essential for this set. It works as a pseudo hazing move, preventing set up pokemon like Clefable, Charizard, and Gyarados among others.
- Whirlpool is what enables Azumarill to be an excellent trapper. It traps a Pokemon for 4-5 turns, which is just the right amount to fully utilize Perish Song.
- Protect is used to gain leftovers recovery and dish out extra Whirlpool damage and stall another turn for Perish Song
- Knock Off removes items to support the rest of the team. If Azumarill is low and cannot Perish song, Whirlpool can bring down some pokemon low with the residual damage and lack of leftovers recovery.
- Scald is STAB and has a good chance to burn. The residual damage from Scald and Whirlpool really racks up. Scald also makes up for the lack of defensive investment as the burn helps Azumarill take physical hits better.
- Rest is a move if you just want to use it as a pure trapper and no other utility. Rest has good synergy with a cleric.
Set Details

- 248 HP allows you take minimum damage from Stealth Rocks. 176 SpD along with that HP number ensures that you live Life Orb Thundurus' Thunderbolt and Mega Venusaur's Sludge Bomb 100% of the time accounting for poison as well. The rest goes in to Def to take physical hits better. Calm Mind Clefable is also more manageable with a specially defensive spread.
- A Sassy nature and 4 speed IVs ensures that Ferrothorn's Gyro Ball's does a maximum of 18% while still out speeding Base 30's like Slowbro.
- Sap Sipper turns a weakness into an immunity allowing it to set up the perish trap combo much easier.
Usage Tips
========
- Common Azumarill switch-ins are absolutely shut down by this set (Ferrothorn, Slowbro, Quagsire, Amoonguss, Alomomola)
- Pokemon that usually beat Azumarill 1v1 also have trouble (Breloom, Charizard X/Y, Gyarados, HP Grass Greninja)
- Try to keep Azumarill healthy against set up sweepers. Perish Song is invaluable against them
- It's usually better to go for Whirlpool first as it has 90% accuracy. Perish Song followed by a missed Whirlpool is the worst. There are some instances where Perish Song is the first move you need to go for. Against Venusaur and Thundurus you cannot beat them if you do not Perish Song first.
- Using this on a balanced team to disguise the set. An Azumarill on a stall team may not be uncommon, but you may not get the surprise KO's you otherwise would with it on a balanced team.
- Volturn teams are difficult to trap. If you are able to status a potential Volt Switch or U-turn user, the residual damage from Whirlpool and the status will rack up and you can beat them that way, instead of relying on Perish Song.
Team Options
========
- Raikou makes an excellent teammate. It can Volt Switch into Azumarill to potentially trap a Pokemon. It also appreciates Ferrothorn/Mega Venusaur being gone. It is a great switch-in for Electric pokes that Azumarill baits in.
- Gliscor and Landorus -T have great synergy together. Their Water / Ice weakness is resisted by Azumarill and Azumarill's Electric / Poison weakness is resisted by those two. Of course fast electric types are a problem to both Pokemon.
