[OVERVIEW]

* Clefable boasts two incredible defensive abilities in Magic Guard and Unaware, allowing it to absorb status or wall boosted attackers.
* Clefable's large movepool provides it with good attacking, recovery, and utility options such as Flamethrower, Softboiled, and Knock Off.
* Its bulk allows it to relatively easily come in on unboosted attackers like Latios, Keldeo, or Garchomp with little fear.
* However, Clefable is not without weaknesses. It fares poorly against Poison- and Steel-types, is very vulnerable to Taunt, and needs Calm Mind boosts to deal substantial damage.
* SM brought a nerf to Thunder Wave, weakening one of Clefable's strongest utility options.
* SM bringing more Fairy-types into the metagame has not only increased competition for Clefable, but also increased the amount of Poison- and Steel-type moves used as coverage, making Clefable's job harder.
* When you combine this with SM's overall harder hitting metagame the generation shift has been especially unkind to Clefable.

Moves

* Clefable is one of the most consistent Stealth Rock users in the tier due to its advantageous match-up with every common Rapid Spin and Defog user except Tapu Fini, or if Clefable lacks Flamethrower, Excadrill and Scizor.
* Moonblast is your best STAB.
* Softboiled provides the healing Clefable needs to easily check a variety of threats.
* Knock Off is very good at crippling opposing Pokemon, as many attackers rely on items like Life Orb or Thick Club to break through Clefable, or rely on Leftovers in order to stall out Clefable.
* Thunder Wave can also cripple incoming threats with paralysis. Unlike Knock Off, Thunder Wave can be used to cripple Mega Pokemon, but Thunder Wave's nerf makes its utility secondary to Knock Off.
* Flamethrower doesn't provide much in terms of support, but gives Clefable a way to damage Steel-type Pokemon that would otherwise switch into Clefable for free.

Set Details
========

* Leftovers provides additional healing to increase Clefable's longevity.
* Magic Guard protects Clefable from many different types of damage, such as from Stealth Rock and Toxic.
* Clefable's EV spread with a Calm nature maximizes its bulk against common physical and special attackers.
* Defense EVs allow Clefable to always live two Life Orb Psyshocks from Latios and two Banded Hoopa-U Hyperspace Furys.
* Special Defense EVs give Clefable the bulk to survive 2HKOs like unboosted Keldeo Scald and Xurkitree Thunderbolt.

Usage Tips
========

* Clefable can easily switch into most Defog and Rapid Spin users, allowing it to keep Stealth Rock up. Clefable's natural bulk also allows it to easily set up Stealth Rock on weaker attacks.
* Try to get Stealth Rock up as early as possible. Clefable does not need to be a lead, but it's very much capable of filling that role.
* Cripple your opponent's team with Knock Off or Thunder Wave in order to make Clefable harder to break.
* Keep Clefable healthy so you can set up Stealth Rock again if it gets removed with Rapid Spin or Defog.

Team Options
========

* Clefable is very flexible and requires minimal to no support to be useful.
* Heatran compliments Clefable very well defensively because it can handle one of the top Poison-types in the tier, Mega Venusaur, while also handling problematic Steel-types like Celesteela, Genesect, and Scizor.
* Hard hitting attackers that want guaranteed Stealth Rocks on the opponent's field to secure KOs like Hoopa-U and Mega Alakazam make good teammates.
* Pokemon vulnerable to Dragon- or Dark-types like Latios and Alolan Marowak appreciate Clefable as a partner.

* Moonblast is your best STAB.
* Wish is Clefable's best healing option as Softboiled is incompatible with Unaware. Wish grants greater overall healing than Moonlight due to higher PP, but sacrifices a move slot as it requires Protect in order to guarantee that Clefable receives the healing.
* Opting for Moonlight instead reduces survivability due to lower PP and halved recovery in sandstorm, rain, or hail, but allows Clefable to run a 4th move.
* Protect ensures that Clefable gets the Wish healing it badly needs to wall a wide variety of threats, and also allows Clefable to scout your opponent's attacks and get free turns of Leftovers healing.
* Heal Bell allows you to boost against status inducers and act as a cleric for your team.
* Flamethrower gives you coverage against Steel-types that can otherwise easily wall this set.

Set Details
========

* 248 HP and 252 Defense maximizes physical bulk while minimizing status and hazard damage.
* Calm Mind boosts will provide Clefable the specially defensive bulk it needs.
* Leftovers provides additional healing to increase Clefable's longevity.
* Unaware in combination with the physically defensive spread allows Clefable to check setup sweepers like Garchomp, Gyarados, and Mimikyu.

Usage Tips
========

* Clefable is very good on stall since it counters a lot of threatening boosting sweepers.
* Utilize Clefable's Dragon-, Dark-, and Fighting-type resistances to switch into Pokemon like Latios, Buzzwole, and Sableye.
* Utilize Unaware and Calm Mind to set-up on other boosting special attackers like Tail Glow Manaphy or Calm Mind Slowbro.
* When opting for Wish, remember that you need to use Protect in order to to receive the Wish Healing on the following turn.

Moves
========

* Moonblast is your best STAB.
* Heal Bell clears your team of status.
* If you already have a cleric for your team, or don't need a cleric at all, Flamethrower is a valuable coverage option to prevent Steel-type Pokemon from switching into Clefable for free.
* If you would rather have a different support option instead of Heal Bell, Knock Off and Thunder Wave can be used instead to allow Clefable to cripple different threats.
* Wish is Clefable's best healing option as Softboiled is incompatible with Unaware.
* Protect ensures that Clefable gets the Wish healing it badly needs to wall a wide variety of threats, and also allows Clefable to scout your opponent's attacks and get free turns of Leftovers healing.

Set Details
========

* Leftovers provides additional healing and works well with Protect.
* 248 HP reduces hazard damage while granting maximum survivability.
* 72 Defense protects Clefable from 2HKOs from Life Orb Kyurem-B Fusion Bolt and defensive Landorus-T Earthquake.
* 188 Special Defense prevents an OHKO from Xurkitree's Gigavolt Havok from Thunderbolt and Manaphy's Hydro Vortex from Surf in rain.
* Unaware blocks the opposing team from setting up on Clefable.
* If you run Knock Off, keep using Calm or Bold natures, as the point of Knock Off on Clefable is not to do damage, but to remove items.
* A fully physically defensive spread of 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD can be used to answer threats like Garchomp and Mimikyu.

Usage Tips
========

* This variant is very good on stall and balance teams since it can counter some of their biggest threats.
* Utilize Clefable's Dragon-, Dark-, and Fighting-type resistances to switch into Pokemon like Hydreigon and Buzzwole.
* Do note Clefable's bulk is overall rather low compared to other walls. Clefable can't take repeatedly extremely hard hits from Pokemon like Hoopa-U or Mega Charizard X and Y.

Team Options
========

* Dugtrio can easily trap most Fire-, Poison-, and Steel-types like Heatran or Toxapex that wall this set.
* Magnezone traps two other problematic Pokemon, Celesteela and Scizor.
* Hippowdon, Landorus-T, Skarmory, Quagsire, and Toxapex can check or counter many of the very hard hitting physical attackers Clefable struggles with.
* Heatran and Tyranitar pair well with Clefable due to its ability to deal with Ground-, Dragon-, and Fighting-type Pokemon like Garchomp and Keldeo.
* Other defensive Pokemon, like Skarmory or Sableye, that can be used as setup fodder by Tail Glow sweepers pair well with Clefable.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Using Calm Mind or Cosmic Power with Stored Power is a less reliable version of the existing Calm Mind sets.
* Thunderbolt, Focus Blast, Ice Beam are additional coverage options over Flamethrower.
* An offensive set with Life Orb can use Clefable's incredible offensive movepool wand retain decent bulk thanks to Magic Guard nullifying Life Orb damage.
* Any set running Calm Mind but not running Flamethrower can opt for a 0 Speed IV and a Sassy or Relaxed nature so that Clefable can set up on Gyro Ball Ferrothorn.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fire-types**: Clefable can do very little to Heatran or Alolan Marowak, making them some of Clefable's biggest counters.

**Poison-types**: Gengar, Mega Venusaur, Haze Toxapex or Tentacruel, and Nihilego can keep Clefable in check by either threatening a KO with Sludge Bomb or by entirely walling Clefable.

**Steel-types**: Mega Scizor, Mega Metagross, Celesteela, Excadrill, and Magearna can easily counter Clefable if it lacks Flamethrower.

**Hard hitting attackers**: Clefable simply does not have the bulk to deal with the likes of Mega Charizard X, Greninja, or Tapu Koko, Lele, or Bulu using their Terrain boosted STABs. While these aren't necessarily the safest switch-ins, they're capable of forcing Clefable out with raw damage.

**Taunt**: Bulky Taunt users like Heatran and Tapu Fini are capable of shutting down Clefable's non-damaging moves, rendering it unable to use moves like Calm Mind or Softboiled, nullifying its survivability.

Could Shadow Ball be in Other Options or a slash for the Magic Guard set? Ghost/Fairy has really good overall neutral coverage, and the Special Defense drops could possibly break some walls that could wall Clefable.

After some discussion I redid the Unaware Wall spread to be a bit more meta relevant. The summary is: Non-CM Unaware is currently outclassed by the CM set and Quagsire if it's a physically defensive spread, but SpD has a niche against Tail Glowers, so I opted to switch to that spread.

also pls gib qcs

It's probably also worth mentioning in the overview that the increased fire power of the metagame coupled with the abundance of Steel-types has made it harder for Clefable to function. It's still pretty decent, but nowhere near as oppressively amazing as it was in Gen VI.

Clefable is one of the most consistent Stealth Rock users in the tier due to its advantageous match-up with every common Rapid Spin and Defog user except Excadrill.
It also somewhat struggles against Taunt Tapu Fini and gets destroyed by Defog Mega Scizor.

Utilize Clefable's great Fairy typing and natural bulk to ensure Stealth Rock stays set up.
How? I'd mention that aggressively double switching back into Defog users when you sense one coming is a good way to keep rocks up. Clefable doesn't have to do it alone either, since strong offensive Pokemon can force switches as well.

  • Cripple your opponent's team with Knock Off or Thunder Wave in order to make Clefable harder to break.
Might be best to specify that this is dependent on your opponent's team.

  • Magic Guard allows Clefable to run 252 HP for maximum bulk without having to worry about percent based damage like Stealth Rock.
Also worth mentioning immunity to status damage.

On the Utility set, i'd strongly consider slashing Flamethrower in the last slot. Clefable invites sooo many Steel-types and you fry em for free with Flamethrower. I'd even go as far to suggest that it should be slashed before the other moves, though your mileage may vary on that one (it largely depends on your team composition after all).

Other than that, it looks great. I can tell you really worked hard on this.

I swore I had this but I guess it got edited out in some rewrite

It also somewhat struggles against Taunt Tapu Fini and gets destroyed by Defog Mega Scizor.
At least I have an excuse for Fini because its new but I don't have an excuse for forgetting Scizor

I'll get something in there

You're kinda right but I don't like it phrased that way. I think of it more as "your teambuilding" over "opponent's team."

Also worth mentioning immunity to status damage.
This is already in there

Might put it on before TWave but since Clef is Maro bait you really enjoy Knock for Thick Club. Maybe I should put that in the analysis lol.

Other than that, it looks great. I can tell you really worked hard on this.

unaware wall
Utilize your Dragon-, Dark-, and Fighting-type resistances to switch into Pokemon like Hydreigon and Keldeo.
252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 188+ SpD Clefable: 220-259 (55.8 - 65.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery (that's the spread on the unaware wall set)

that statement is a tad misleading, pick a different example.

in any case, have a usage tip about wish+protect on the sets that have it. should be intuitively obvious but for newer players just explain how it works (and other ways you can or shouldn't use protect as well).

unaware cm
mention that moonlight's pp is one of the big drawbacks (pp is important for stall which is what you use unaware clef on).
Unaware in combination with the physically defensive spread allows Clefable to check setup sweepers like Garchomp.
needs more examples. gyara, mimikyu, zygarde are good ones.

there's something missing in the set i think. cm unaware clef isn't a particularly fantastic sweeper, but it doesn't have to be a fantastic sweeper all the time for the set to work. talk about using unaware+cm to beat other calm mind users, especially those that might normally create stalemate situations (suicune sticks out). furthermore, cm clef can force certain mons out that you wouldn't normally be able to force out quite as easily, making it easier to reset certain situations. in usage tips i want you to go into the alternate functions of cm on the unaware set specifically other than purely sweeping.

checks and counters
you do mention it in the overview, but power creep being bad for clefable is a real thing. clefable is not that naturally bulky, so pokemon that are just strong or have strong coverage options to deal with clefable (gunk shot greninja is the first that comes to mind) can seriously threaten it. overwhelming clefable with sheer power is one of the main ways to deal with it other than having a specific poison/fire/steel that beats it, so you should mention that.

you also mention taunt as an issue in the overview but not c&c.

this is fine otherwise, good stuff just gonna hold off on 3/3 because of p2's post

* Clefable boasts traits like an incredible movepool, good bulk, and amazing abilities, making it the gold standard for Fairy-types. (Comment: incorporate these "generic" traits of Clefable into bullets like the 2nd one, where you analyze what said trait allows Clefable to do. eg incredible movepool and abilities let it do (some unique thing) )

Also since "Magic Guard allows..." is the main part of the sentence, there is more emphasis on Magic Guard allowing 252 HP, when really you want 252 HP because wall.
* Other defensive Pokemon Pokemon, like Skarmory or Sableye Sableye, that can be used as setup fodder by Tail Glow sweepers get abused by Tail Glow sweepers pair well with Clefable. (GP pls help I can't figure out how to english this sentence)

Other Options
=============

* Using Calm Mind or Cosmic Power with Stored Power is a less reliable version of the existing CM Calm Mind sets.
* Thunderbolt, Focus Blast, Ice Beam are additional coverage options over Flamethrower.
* An offensive set with Life Orb can abuse use Clefable's incredible offensive movepool while retaining and retain decent bulk thanks to Magic Guard nullifying Life Orb damage.
* Any set running Calm Mind but not running Flamethrower can opt for a 0 Speed IV and a Sassy or Relaxed nature so that Clefable can set-up set up on (Comment: (Gyro Ball) ) Ferrothorn.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Taunt**: Bulky Taunt users like Heatran and Tapu Fini are capable of shutting down Clefable's non-damaging moves, rendering it unable to use moves like Calm Mind or Softboiled, nullifying its survivability.

uploaded; just for future reference, put lines like these: "This variant is very good on stall and balance teams since it can counter some of their biggest threats." in team options, not usage tips.
