Core 4 by John, more widely recognised as bro fist, was one of the best examples of Spike stacking bulky offense teams in SM OU around the time of the Genesect suspect test. It utilises massive threats in the metagame, such as Mega Metagross, Ash-Greninja and Tapu Lele, showcasing underrated sets such as Shed Shell Tapu Lele. This set was quickly established to be the stadard on Tapu Lelebecause of the high usage of stall with Dugtrio, which could trap and remove non-Shed Shell Tapu Lele with ease. Core 4 didn't particularly kick off any metagame trends like any of the other teams did, but it quickly established itself to be one of the best and most effective teams in the tier, seeing extensive use and providing successful results in tournaments and on the ladder.

KratosMana's under the rainbow was an ideal representation of balance during the early stages of SM OU. It utilised a solid defensive core that handled the metagame's main threats, while packing enough firepower to trouble bulkier teams. Tapu Bulu acted as the team's main stallbreaker, with its access to Swords Dance, Terrain-boosted Horn Leech and impressive coverage allowing it to break through common defensive behemoths like Skarmory, Celesteela and Mega Venusaur. It also provided the team with plenty of defensive utility, with its great typing and natural bulk allowing it to check the likes of Zygarde and Greninja. Zygarde provided the team with another extremely threatening wincon thanks to an excellent STAB move in Thousand Arrows, its fantastic bulk, and support from Toxic Spikes and Grassy Terrain. Along with Tapu Bulu, Zygarde was the team's main method of dealing stall teams.

Landorus-T, Mega Scizor and Toxapex formed a potent defensive core, checking the majority of OU's top threats such as Mega Metagross, Mega Charizard X and Volcarona between them. The core also had the capability to set up Stealth Rock and Toxic Spikes or keep the field clear of hazards via Defog, allowing KratosMana to plan his hazard control strategy depending on the matchup. Heatran rounded things off as the team's revenge killer and the Pokemon that usually cleaned up late-game. It also provided the team with defensive utility of its own thanks to its ability to naturally check Tapu Lele and Mega Pinsir.

obii's team, Triple Z, brought a large shift to the metagame. This team was one of the main forces behind the surge in usage of Choice Band Zygarde as opposed to Substitute + Coil and Dragon Dance variants. Choice Band Zygarde relied on its high immediate power, along with an extremely effective STAB move in Thousand Arrows, to make for a very threatening wallbreaker in SM OU. Choice Band Zygarde quickly gained popularity due to its ability to break down Pokemon that could check Coil Zygarde effectively, such as Tapu Fini and non-Bold Clefable. This team also saw the use of 3 attack Zapdos. Albeit with less investment in Speed compared to what it runs now, 3 attack Zapdos quickly rose in popularity because it easily pressured a lot of teams that neglected preaparing for Electric-types - particularly ones that relied on Grass-types such as Ferrothorn and Tangrowth. Zapdos's coverage, combined with its longevity and ability to easily PP stall bulky teams, made it a large threat in the metagame. This team also utilised a very strong backbone of Mega Scizor / Zapdos / Zygarde (hence the name Triple Z), which has seen use in many successful teams.

ez's bulky offense team played a big role in his run to the top 16 of OST 13. Choice Specs Gengar was the focus of the team, and the lack of Ghost-type resistances in OU made its boosted Shadow Ball a terrifying prospect for many teams to face. It was particularly effective against more defensive teams, which ez was aiming to be prepared against. Clefable was a logical choice with its ability to set up Stealth Rock and absorb status from common defensive Pokemon like Mega Sableye. Mega Metagross was chosen next to check Tapu Lele and provide the team with a powerful physical attacker that could pressure stall and Baton Pass teams, which were popular at the time. Landorus-T acted as a catch-all check to many physical threats in the tier, and a powerful wallbreaker that could weaken the likes of Skarmory in order to open up a potential sweep for Mega Metagross. Tangrowth provided a much-needed Water-type resist to counter Keldeo and Tapu Fini, while also acting as an effective pivot and providing Knock Off support to weaken opposing walls for its teammates. Keldeo rounded off the team as an effective revenge killer and a check to powerful Fire-types like Heatran. Times Like These is a great showcase of how effective Gengar can be, and its success and fine representation of the balanced playstyle makes it a worthy addition to our archive.

TDK's team provides an ideal representation of the most common balance archetype that was prevalent in the wake of the Mega Metagross suspect test. Ash-Greninja is the main focus of the team and one of the most fearsome sweepers in OU with its tremendous power after transforming, excellent coverage and blistering Speed stat. The team also showcases Zapdos and Mew, two Pokemon that enjoyed rises in popularity as an anti-metagame offensive Pokemon and a solid check to many top tier threats, respectively. Mega Scizor and Amoonguss provide a potent defensive core, covering the majority of the metagame's offensive behemoths between them. Garchomp rounds off the team as a capable revenge killer and late-game cleaner. This build was quickly established as an influential and effective template for balance, achieving substantial success in tournaments, and as such is deserving of a place in our archive.

This team, built by Manipulative, was selected for its success during the first SM UU Ladder Tournament. Several players, such as Arifeen, Christo and Manipulative himself utilised this team in order to qualify for the Ladder Tournament playoffs. The team utilises Unaware Clefable, a metagame-defining Pokemon which, in this case, doubled as a wincon with the use of Calm Mind. This team also featured a Regenerator core of Amoonguss and Alomomola that helped shut down popular stallbreakers Mantine was a newly viable option that popped up during this generation due to its access to Roost, which allowed it to function as a good Fighting-type check and Defog user for this team. Blissey was added as a catch-all special wall, and supported the team with Stealth Rock and Heal Bell. Quagsire was the secondary wincon that this team utilised, and also acted as another deterrent to setup sweepers, such as Bisharp, Scizor and Cobalion. With four methods of shutting down setup, sweepers this team was incredibly hard to break down, which is why Manipulative's team essentially defined stall teams of the era and saw a large amount of success.

Minority's team, Vario, features a trap-turn structure utilising many of the offensive hallmarks of early SM Ubers. The team focusses on the synergy of offensive powerhouses Mega Gengar, Xerneas and Yveltal. Mega Gengar traps and eliminates a variety of Pokemon for Xerneas to sweep, while Yveltal provides a Ground immunity and a method of getting Mega Gengar actively into play. Primal Groudon fulfils several key roles as a Xerneas check, Primal Kyogre check, Ho-Oh check, and general check to Steel-types. From an offensive perspective, Primal Groudon functions as a wallbreaker, being able to punch holes in defensive teams for Yvletal or Xerenas. The final members, a Swords Dance Arceus and Excadrill, are gluemons that provide the utility of Stealth Rock, Rapid Spin, a revenge killer, and a Ghost-type immunity.

Early on in the SM DOU metagame, prior to the rise of the bulky, setup-based metagame that characterised mid-SM, cores built around offensive pressure and fast, frailer Pokemon were what defined the tier. Amongst the most well known cores was the "Psychic spam" core of Deoxys-A and Tapu Lele. Matame's ladder-dominating team that paired a Psychic spam core with Mega Charizard Y became the most well known of the Deo-Lele hyper offense builds, peaking the ladder not once, but twice. It featured not just Psychic spam, but also Fire spam with Charizard and Heatran. This was backed by Zapdos and Glare Zygarde for dual-speed control, the latter of which also provided a wincon with Dragon Dance. Matame's aim when building this team was to create an environment in which Tapu Lele and Deoxys-A could truly shine, and was successful in not only doing this but also in creating a build which stood out from its contemporaries.

A product of SPL 8, this team was the first in Doubles OU to utilise the newly introduced Seed items in conjunction with a terrain setter. On this team, Zapdos holds the Misty Seed item, which boosts its Special Defense by one stage in Misty Terrain. This team's goal was to establish speed control with Zapdos' Tailwind, and then proceed to deal damage with powerful threats like Mega Salamence and Choice Band Landorus-T. Tapu Fini, while essential for Zapdos, was also capable of dealing significant damage after a Calm Mind boost. Tyranitar was useful for checking some of the most common Pokemon in the tier and providing Sandstorm to offset other forms of weather, while Aegislash served as both a nuke and cleaner with the Ghostium Z item and an innovative moveset. All in all, Seedy Beginnings had a significant influence on the metagame, and its dominant performance in various tournaments makes it a fine entry into our archive.

Bullit is a prime example of a bulky offense team in early Sun and Moon LC. Utilising Grimer-Alola, which at the time of the team's creation was frequently overlooked due to the prevalence of Mudbray, Onix, and Diglett, this team marked the emergence of Grimer-Alola as a staple of the tier. Grimer-Alola proves its worth with strong Knock Offs and a handy chance to poison, substantially weakening these important Pokemon while also being the tier's sturdiest answer to the ever-problematic Abra and Gastly. Vullaby is paired with Grimer-Alola in order to abuse its ability to weaken opposing Onix and Mudbray. Vullaby uses a bulkier spread in order to handle opposing Fighting-types and Snivy better. The team opts to include a Mudbray of its own as a third blanket check to many top threats in the tier, and is the team's main answer to Pawniard. Between Mudbray, Alolan Grimer and Vullaby, much of the tier is handled rather comfortably, though the team is dearly lacking in speed.

Ferroseed provides hazards in order to keep up the pressure against Flying-types such as Doduo and Thunder Wave support to neuter the threat of Mienfoo and any Fire-type keen on switching in. Scald + Thunderbolt Staryu acts as the team's primary way to check boosted Water-types and Flying-types while also keeping hazards at bay; a bulkier spread is used chiefly to keep Staryu around longer. Abra occupies the last slot, applying immense pressure on opposing offense teams and providing a general catch-all answer to any setup sweepers that get out of hand.

OP's team debuted Hidden Power Grass on Vullaby, which would eventually become the standard Nasty Plot Vullaby set. The team is centred around surprising common switch-ins to Vullaby, with its Grass-type coverage allowing it to obliterate its Water-type and Rock-type counters, such as Onix, Kabuto and Ponyta, with Bloom Doom. Grimer-Alola furthers this aim by providing Pursuit support in order to ease the team's matchup against faster wallbreakers which it threatens out. Substitute Snubbull complements Alolan Grimer defensively and greatly appreciates its ability to remove Gastly from the game. With Substitute, Snubbull is able to surprise teams and take advantage of many of its counters that commonly utilise status. Specially defensive Kabuto was another set that OP utilised in an effort to stave off opposing Flying-types, and eventually this would become the common Kabuto spread as it can somewhat manage Nasty Plot Vullaby, unlike other spreads. Mienfoo rounds off the team as an offensive pivot, with Taunt to prevent Foongus from sleeping a teammate or Dweeble from setting up any hazards.

Sticky Web offense has long been a force to be reckoned with in Little Cup. Hogg's version of this archetype was built as an offensive team that could stand up to the weather teams that were particularly common prior to Vulpix's ban. Specially defensive Pumpkaboo provided support to the hazard core of Surskit and Pawniard, switching into every common spinner and acting as a general defensive pivot. Pawniard set up Stealth Rock, discouraged Defog and provided excellent offensive presence, while the newly-released Counter Abra served as a late-game sweeper and catch-all answer to problematic Pokemon. The main offensive force of the team was Fightinium Z Scraggy, which was an underrated sweeper at the time and could steamroll through teams with Moxie and the raw power of All-Out Pummeling. An uncommon choice of Choice Scarf Shellder rounded off the team as a revenge killer and late-game cleaner, being able to outspeed and punch through common sweepers, such as Bellsprout and Focus Sash Abra, and punish opposing webs teams by KOing opposing Surskit.
