[OVERVIEW]

In a landscape dominated by strong offensive Normal-types, Porygon appears outclassed and outgunned by all, especially by Wigglytuff, which is the default bulky, recovery-using Normal-type that blanket checks special attackers like Xatu, Dewgong, and Chinchou. However, Recover is a saving grace, being one of the best moves in Generation 2 and single-handedly making Porygon a legitimate pick. Recover's astonishing 32 PP makes Porygon far more resilient a wall than its stats would show, turning otherwise 3HKOs from unboosted attackers like Xatu, Octillery, and Graveler into attacks that never break past a healthy Porygon without critical hits. Recover also frees up a moveslot since Porygon does not have to use both Rest and Sleep Talk. Porygon additionally has a solid movepool outside of Recover, as well as a good Special Attack stat and the overall amazing Normal typing, allowing it to utilize Recover to the fullest. Porygon answers Xatu and Dewgong well, using Recover to heal off any damage while hitting them super effectively or setting up Curse in return. Porygon can also help to answer Dugtrio and Curse Stantler, 2HKOing the former with Double-Edge or Ice Beam and paralyzing the latter. It's additionally a prime candidate for spreading paralysis with Thunder Wave, using its solid bulk, Recover, and mere one weakness to slow down offensive threats and support slow but dangerous teammates, such as Kingler. However, Porygon still has plenty of flaws, the main ones being competition and vulnerability to status. Porygon has very low base stats when compared to other Normal-types like Fearow, Stantler, and Wigglytuff, all of which are much better than Porygon, primarily Wigglytuff as previously mentioned. Porygon is also the only recovery-using pure Normal-type that cannot effectively check Chinchou or Ninetales, as, although Recover is generally far better than RestTalk, it also means Porygon can't absorb status, so any Thunder paralysis or Toxic poison will effectively make Porygon useless; Sludge Bomb's poison rate also prevents Porygon from being a decent check to Weezing. Porygon is also incredibly slow; the only common Pokemon slower are Graveler, Sudowoodo, and Pineco, meaning Porygon is incredibly reliant on spreading paralysis and gets forced to repeatedly use Recover, instead of using an attacking move. This massive opens it up to critical hits, Ice Beam freezes, or Psychic Special Defense drops from the likes of Octillery, Dewgong, and Xatu on the switch or if they choose to stay in.

Set Description
=========

Thunder and Ice Beam are the best combination of special attacks to hit the highest number of common Pokemon for super effective damage, such as Xatu, Octillery, Dugtrio, Dewgong, Fearow, and Pupitar. Thunder Wave significantly reduces what can safely switch into and take advantage of Porygon, crippling targets like Magmar, Kingler, Flareon, Weezing, Stantler, and Primeape that lack RestTalk. Thunder Wave also is generally a great move to use into basically anything, as actually outspeeding foes allows Porygon to use its moves much more safely; the same speed control works great to support slow but powerful teammates, namely Kingler, Curse Stantler, Primeape, and Magmar, which appreciate threats like Xatu, Fearow, and Weezing being slowed down and potentially fully paralyzed. This particular Porygon set is a great threat to many Xatu + Dugtrio Spikes teams—one of the most common and dominant team structures in the tier—as the only Pokemon commonly used on them that can handle BoltBeam Porygon without being ruined by Thunder Wave is Wigglytuff, which is still not on a majority of them. Still, this potential to face Wigglytuff is the main reason why Thief is a good consideration; Wigglytuff's ability to take hits is significantly reduced without Leftovers, especially with Spikes on the field. Also, Porygon has good enough Special Attack and super effective coverage to gradually chip down threats that can answer a Porygon that lacks Thunder Wave, like Weezing, over the course of a game, which are also further being chipped by Spikes. However, Thief of course leaves Porygon without the all-round amazing utility of Thunder Wave, meaning it has to try and fish for paralysis with Thunder, a mere 21% chance factoring in accuracy; Thief can also only steal one item, and not having Leftovers when first attempting to switch in, especially with Spikes on the field, can make finding entry for Porygon more difficult.

Team Options
========

Weezing is the best partner for Porygon, appreciating Porygon's prowess in checking Xatu and Dugtrio while taking on Primeape and Hitmonlee itself, and it can use Explosion to eliminate a Wigglytuff or Ninetales that walls Porygon. Pineco is also a prime teammate for Porygon, as its Spikes wears down walls like Wigglytuff and Ninetales, which Porygon struggles with. Fearow and Xatu help to check Primeape, Hitmonlee, Gloom, and RestTalk Stantler while appreciating Porygon's ability to take on Dewgong and Graveler; Porygon can also steal the Leftovers from Wigglytuff or Sudowoodo, which helps Fearow and Xatu wallbreak. Rock-types like Sudowoodo and Graveler serve as effective answers to Pineco, Wigglytuff, and Weezing—bar if Weezing has Hidden Power Water—which can take advantage of Porygon, and Porygon can handle Dewgong and—if at high health—Octillery for them. Graveler also clears away Spikes with Rapid Spin, making entry for Porygon easier. Octillery itself is a great ally for Porygon, stopping Ninetales and Sudowoodo in their tracks, and Octillery and Porygon can help each other in checking Xatu, other Octillery, and Ground-types like Dugtrio and Graveler so that neither gets overwhelmed too quickly. Good wincons that take advantage of paralysis, such as Kingler, Curse + Light Screen Stantler, and Primeape, like having Thunder Wave Porygon around to facilitate setup and check Xatu. Thunder Wave also makes setup easier for Wigglytuff, as does Porygon checking Sudowoodo and Graveler for it, and Wigglytuff can answer Chinchou, unlike Porygon, which is afraid of Thunder paralysis. Ninetales also has great synergy with Porygon, as Porygon can switch into and threaten out Octillery, Dewgong, and Graveler, while Ninetales walls Weezing and is a great answer to Magnemite. Gloom also works well with Porygon, halting Primeape, Hitmonlee, Chinchou, and Octillery that lack Ice Beam, while Porygon can switch into Xatu and Dewgong for Gloom; the two also combine to form a potentially overwhelming, paralysis-spamming core, with Gloom having Stun Spore and Porygon having Thunder Wave.

Set Description
=========

Curse Porygon may appear outclassed by other Curse Normal-types, mainly Wigglytuff and the rare Dunsparce, especially since they also have access to paralysis moves—Thunder Wave or Body Slam and Glare, respectively. Porygon often gets overshadowed by Wigglytuff, but it makes up for this in waves by having Recover, allowing it to find setup and switch-in opportunities far more easily; Recover only using one moveslot also means Porygon can fit both recovery and the valuable paralysis spreading of Thunder Wave, whereas Wigglytuff and Dunsparce solely miss Sleep Talk if using a paralysis move, as their best self-healing move is Rest—the exception being Body Slam Wigglytuff, which retains Sleep Talk but can't spread paralysis as reliably. Porygon also differentiates itself from these two by being able to actively switch into Sudowoodo and Graveler, boosting up with Curse and and using Recover to stay healthy, forcing them to use Self-Destruct or Explosion, respectively, to take Porygon out. The combination of Curse, Thunder Wave, and Recover is so notable because Thunder Wave means Porygon will outspeed foes despite lowering its own Speed with Curse, and any full paralysis will be a free turn where Porygon does not have to use Recover, letting it continue powering up with Curse or just launch a boosted Double-Edge. The recoil of Double-Edge is a negligible drawback compared to Return's lower power due to Recover, and Porygon needs as much power as it can get with such a low Attack stat. Curse also importantly makes Porygon a decent switch-in to Stantler if at full health, avoiding a 2HKO even with Spikes up and paralyzing Stantler with Thunder Wave, proceeding to boost up with Curse and beat Stantler. RestTalk Stantler cannot match Porygon's boosts and can just give Porygon ample setup opportunity while Curse + Light Screen Stantler hates being paralyzed.

Team Options
========

Solid teammates for Curse Porygon are Weezing, Xatu, and Fearow, which can all take on Primeape and Hitmonlee; Octillery shuts down Ninetales and Sudowoodo; Sudowoodo and especially Graveler help prevent Pineco, Wigglytuff, and Weezing from using Porygon to set up or launch attacks; Ninetales stops Weezing and Magnemite. Pokemon that enjoy Porygon's paralysis Xatu-checking capabilities, like Kingler and Primeape, make for good partners as well. Fearow, RestTalk Persian, Fire Blast Weezing, and Sunny Day Ninetales get a special mention as teammates, as they appreciate Porygon's ability to force Sudowoodo and Graveler to sacrifice themselves to beat it.

Ice Beam can be used in place of Thunder Wave on the Curse set in order to let Porygon break past Pupitar, as well as immediately threatening Xatu and especially Dugtrio without worrying about taking recoil. However, this makes it significantly more difficult for Porygon to successfully set up with Curse, as the opposing Pokemon will likely always be faster. Thus, after using Double-Edge, it may be in KO range due to taking a strong special attack before moving, alongside Double-Edge recoil; lacking Thunder Wave also means Porygon can no longer support other slow teammates, like Octillery. Nightmare has potential over Thunder Wave on the BoltBeam set to reduce the safety in switching in an erstwhile wall, especially with Spikes on the field and some prior chip damage, primarily aiming for RestTalk Wigglytuff, Ninetales, Stantler, or Persian. Once again though, it means sacrificing the all-around great utility of Thunder Wave, and Nightmare will likely be useless if BoltBeam Porygon does not encounter one of these foes, as other Rest users like Xatu, Fearow, and Octillery lose to Porygon anyways; Thief also tends to be a superior option against these checks.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Wigglytuff**: Wigglytuff walls the BoltBeam set, not being weak to Thunder or Ice Beam, and Porygon's lack of STAB means it will not significantly damage Wigglytuff, even with Spikes on the field. Wigglytuff, meanwhile, can set up with Curse in its face, easily boosting quickly, breaking past Porygon, and potentially KOing even more Pokemon. However, Double-Edge and Return variants of Wigglytuff stalemate with Curse Porygon, though Body Slam variants can paralyze Porygon and break past it. Wigglytuff does not enjoy Thief Porygon stealing its Leftovers, though Thief also means Porygon will not be carrying Thunder Wave, and will have a more difficult time switching into battle if it has not used Thief yet. Wigglytuff can also be frozen by Ice Beam, though this is highly unreliable, and Wigglytuff will likely be asleep for a notable portion of the time it is in battle, preventing Ice Beam from freezing.

**Ninetales**: Ninetales with Toxic basically counters Porygon, easily walling BoltBeam variants with its massive Special Defense and lack of weakness to Electric or Ice, and it can essentially reduce Porygon to fodder with poison. Curse Porygon is not walled by Ninetales but hates poison so much that it is still deathly afraid of Ninetales. Ninetales also always carries Rest and commonly Sleep Talk to prevent Thunder Wave paralysis, and if it doesn't pack Sleep Talk, then it will be running Roar, which prevents Curse Porygon from even setting up in the first place. However, Ninetales without Toxic is walled by Porygon, though it still walls BoltBeam variants of Porygon back.

**Magnemite**: Magnemite is not weak to any of Thunder, Ice Beam, or Double-Edge and usually runs Thunder, which, if it lands, has a 30% chance to effectively end Porygon on the spot with paralysis. Magnemite also almost always uses Rest and Sleep Talk to heal off paralysis and remain an incredibly dangerous threat while sleeping, and Porygon giving it entry is not ideal. However, Magnemite despises Thief stealing its Leftovers because, with Spikes on the field and no passive healing, it is much more liable to being 3HKOed by Xatu and Fearow on the switch. Thus, it can fail to have any defensive value. While Magnemite can heal off paralysis with Rest, it still does not like being paralyzed; if it is at high health, it will likely have little reason to use Rest and thus can be susceptible to full paralysis, and also it will become slower than everything.

**Fighting-type Attacks**: Primeape and Hitmonlee come close to a flat-out OHKO on Porygon with their STAB attacks, and any minor chip damage, usually from Spikes, will push them over the line. They are not weak to either Thunder or Ice Beam, so RestTalk Hitmonlee hard walls BoltBeam Porygon, while Primeape can come in on a usage of Ice Beam or Recover and proceed to set up a free Substitute, blocking Thunder Wave and preventing the Porygon user from effectively switching around predicted moves. Primeape also occasionally runs RestTalk itself, which also lets it wall BoltBeam Porygon. It can even just critically hit right through any Defense boosts from Curse Porygon, as Cross Chop has a boosted critical hit rate of 25%. However, non-RestTalk Primeape despises Thunder Wave, and Hitmonlee does not enjoy paralysis before it uses Rest. Primeape using Cross Chop can also be exploited with a free switch to Xatu or Weezing, and Primeape may even eventually run out of its 8 PP; Cross Chop also has a 20% chance to miss, and both Primeape and Hitmonlee are 2HKOed by a Curse-boosted Double-Edge; they also cannot OHKO Porygon back if it is healthy. Additionally, while not a Fighting-type itself, Magmar has a high Attack stat and access to Cross Chop, which is a guaranteed OHKO on Porygon if it scores a critical hit, a 20% chance after accuracy; however, this is very risky for the Magmar user, as Magmar hates being paralyzed, and Cross Chop can easily miss or not land a critical hit.

**Pineco**: Pineco can switch into Porygon on a use of Recover, Ice Beam, or Curse, proceed to easily use Spikes, and then either poison Porygon with Toxic or eliminate it outright with Explosion. However, Thunder can 2HKO Pineco with even the slightest amount of chip, usually coming from Spikes. If Pineco is paralyzed by Thunder Wave or Thunder as it switches in, the Porygon user can switch to their own Pineco and proceed to spam Rapid Spin until the opponent's Pineco is fully paralyzed. Pineco then can freely use Spikes, proceed to use Rapid Spin until another full paralysis occurs or Toxic is used, then use Explosion and win the Spikes war by a mile.

**Weezing**: Weezing is faster than Porygon and does not take significant damage from Double-Edge or Thunder, in return fishing for poison from Sludge Bomb while doing solid damage or outright taking out Porygon with Explosion. However, Weezing taking Thunder Wave or having its Leftovers stolen by Thief, prefers to stay healthy to take hits from faster threats like Fearow and Primeape, and has defensive responsibilities beyond handling Porygon; using Explosion means sacrificing Weezing just to eliminate Porygon, which can leave its team vulnerable to Primeape if Porygon chooses to partner with it.

**Rock-types**: Sudowoodo can use Curse in front of Porygon, as it resists Double-Edge, is not weak to Thunder or Ice Beam, and has plenty of bulk. However, Sudowoodo does not enjoy taking Thunder Wave or having its Leftovers taken by Thief, and has to resort to sacrificing itself with Self-Destruct to take out Curse Porygon, as otherwise it won't do enough back to Porygon and will slowly get whittled down by Double-Edge and full paralysis turns. Even RestTalk Sudowoodo has to try and PP stall Porygon, which can even just result in Sudowoodo getting PP stalled itself. Graveler and Pupitar are immune to Thunder Wave, but Graveler cannot break past Porygon without well-timed critical hits or using Explosion on it due to being slower. Pupitar, meanwhile, is not 2HKOed by Ice Beam from full health, can easily break past Curse Porygon with Screech, and is faster; however, it cannot serve as an effective switch-in to Porygon with Ice Beam, unless it is comfortable trading most of its health to take a large chunk out of Porygon, though Porygon still might be able to heal off any damage later.

In a landscape dominated by strong offensive Normal-types, Porygon appears outclassed and outgunned by all, especially by Wigglytuff sort of awkward idk why especially wigglytuff if youre just looking at stats or what have you. However, Recover is a saving grace, being one of the best moves in Generation 2 and single-handedly making Porygon a legitimate pick in the metagame. Recover's astonishing 32 PP allows Porygon to function as far bulkier a wall than its stats would show, turning otherwise 3HKOes by unboosted attacks from the likes of Xatu, Octillery, and Stantler into never breaking past Porygon without critical hits second half of sentence is super awko. Porygon also has a great movepool outside of Recover to boot knit pick but kinda contradicting to the comment about recover being its saving grace, as well as a good Special Attack stat of 85 and a STAB boost on its Normal-type moves, allowing it to use its wide movepool very effectively. Porygon primarily functions as a fantastic Xatu answer, using Recover to heal off any damage while being able to hit Xatu super-effectively or set up in its face in return okay this might be a fundamental disagreement but i dont believe this. with spikes and hax i never try to switch pory into xatu. Depending on the set, Porygon can also act as an answer to Dugtrio, Stantler, and Graveler. Porygon is also a prime candidate for spreading paralysis with Thunder Wave, using its solid bulk when coupled with Recover and lack of weaknesses outside of the Fighting-type to slow down opposing offensive threats and provide support for slow but dangerous teammates such as Kingler. However, Porygon still has plenty of flaws, the main ones being competition and vulnerability to status. Porygon has very low base stats when compared to other Normal-types like Fearow, Stantler, and Wigglytuff, all who are individually much better than Porygon, primarily Wigglytuff as it is directly fighting with Porygon on a team for the role of checking Xatu and Dewgong. Porygon is also the only recovery-using pure Normal-type that cannot serve as an effective check to Chinchou or Ninetales, as any Thunder paralysis or Toxic poison will effectively make Porygon useless; Sludge Bomb's poison rate also prevents Porygon from being an effective check to Weezing. Porygon is also incredibly slow, sitting at only 178 effective Speed; the only common Pokemon slower are Graveler, Sudowoodo, and Pineco — this means Porygon is incredibly reliant on spreading paralysis and being forced to repeatedly use Recover instead of using an attacking move, and any critical hits on the switch-in will likely be enough to knock Porygon out.

Recover is mandatory as Porygon's best form of healing, and a Porygon without Recover is strictly inferior to every other Normal-type. Thunder and Ice Beam are the best combo of special attacks to hit the most amount of common Pokemon for super-effective damage, such as Xatu, Octillery, Dugtrio, Dewgong, Fearow, and Graveler. Thunder Wave works to significantly reduce what can safely switch into and take advantage of Porygon, crippling targets like Magmar, Kingler, Flareon, Weezing, and Stantler and Primeape that lack RestTalk. This particular Porygon set is a great threat to many Xatu + Dugtrio Spikes archetypes —one of the most common and dominant team structures in the tier— as the only Pokemon commonly used on them that can handle BoltBeam Porygon without being ruined by Thunder Wave is Wigglytuff, who will still not be on a majority of them. Wigglytuff being the only common answer to Porygon on this team style is the main reason why Thief is a good consideration; Wigglytuff's ability to take hits is significantly reduced without Leftovers, especially with Spikes on the field, and Porygon has good enough Special Attack and super-effective coverage to be able to chip down threats that can answer a Porygon that lacks Thunder Wave like Weezing over the course of a game, also further being chipped by Spikes. However, Thief of course leaves Porygon without the all-around amazing utility of Thunder Wave, Thief can only be used once, and not having Leftovers when attempting to switch into battle with Spikes on the field can make finding entry for Porygon more difficult, so using Thief rather than Thunder Wave is not recommended as the first option for every Porygon team. mention that although bad thunder can para if u have thief

Weezing is the best partner for Porygon, appreciating Porygon's prowess in checking Xatu and Dugtrio while taking on Primeape and Hitmonlee itself and potentially using Explosion to eliminate a Wigglytuff or Ninetales that walls Porygon. Ninetales is also a very synergistic option to pair with Porygon, as Porygon can switch into and threaten out Octillery, Dewgong, and Graveler while Ninetales walls Weezing and is a great answer to Magnemite. i think gloom is good for chinch, oct, and the fightings like weez

Recover is mandatory and the reason for Porygon's use. Thunder Wave not only provides valuable team support in slowing down opposing foes but also makes Porygon a physical setup sweeper that can use paralysis itself, meaning it is almost entirely self-sufficient. Curse is essential alongside Double-Edge as to let Porygon pose a serious threat, as dropping Curse makes it far more difficult to break past bulky Pokemon like Weezing, Dewgong, and especially Wigglytuff since it can just boost up with Curse in Porygon's face. The recoil of Double-Edge is negligible compared to Return due to Porygon's access to Recover, and Porygon needs as much power as it can get with such a low Attack stat. curse and twave have synergy

Solid teammates for Curse Porygon are largely similar to that of the BoltBeam set; Weezing, Xatu, and Fearow can all take on Primeape and Hitmonlee, Octillery shuts down Ninetales and Sudowoodo, Sudowoodo and especially Graveler help prevent Pineco, Wigglytuff, and Weezing from using Porygon to set up or launch attacks, Ninetales stops Weezing and Magnemite, and Pokemon that enjoy paralysis and Porygon's Xatu-checking capabilities like Kingler and Primeape make for good partners as well.

Ice Beam can be used in place of Thunder Wave on the Curse set in order to let Porygon break past otherwise would-be walls such as Graveler and Pupitar as well as immediately threaten Xatu and especially Dugtrio. However, this makes it significantly more difficult for Porygon to successfully set up with Curse, as the opposing Pokemon will likely always be faster than it and it means that after using Double-Edge it may be in range of a KO due to taking a strong special attack before moving and the recoil that comes from using Double-Edge; it also means Porygon can no longer support slower teammates like Octillery. Agility can also be used over Thunder Wave on the Curse set, retaining the ability for Porygon to outspeed its foes despite using Curse, but it drastically reduces the mid-game utility of Thunder Wave and Agility has to repeatedly be used to boost Porygon's speed as using Curse will continue to lower it, which can open up Porygon to critical hits. Nightmare has potential over Thunder Wave on the BoltBeam set to reduce the safety in switching in an otherwise wall, especially with Spikes on the field and some prior chip damage, primarily aiming for Wigglytuff, Ninetales, and RestTalk Stantler or Persian. Once again though, it means sacrificing the all-around great utility of Thunder Wave, and Nightmare will likely be useless in matchups where BoltBeam Porygon does not encounter one of these foes, as other Rest users like Xatu, Fearow, and Octillery lose to Porygon anyways.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Wigglytuff**: Wigglytuff walls the BoltBeam set, not being weak to Thunder or Ice Beam and Porygon's lack of STAB on either move means it will not be hitting hard enough to significantly damage Wigglytuff, even with Spikes on the field. Wigglytuff meanwhile can set up with Curse in its face, easily boosting quickly and breaking past Porygon and potentially knocking out even more Pokemon. However, Double-Edge and Return variants of Wigglytuff stalemate with Curse Porygon, though Body Slam variants can easily paralyze Porygon and break past it. Wigglytuff does not enjoy having its Leftovers stolen by Thief Porygon, though it means Porygon will also not be carrying Thunder Wave and will have a more difficult time switching into battle if it has not used Thief yet. Wigglytuff can also be frozen by Ice Beam, though this is highly unreliably and Wigglytuff will likely be asleep for a notable portion of the time it is in battle.

**Ninetales**: Ninetales basically counters Porygon, easily walling BoltBeam variants with its massive Special Defense and lack of weakness to Electric or Ice, and can essentially reduce Porygon to fodder with poison from Toxic. Primeape using Cross Chop to hit Porygon can also be exploited with a free switch to Xatu or Weezing, and Primeape may even eventually run out of PP; Cross Chop also has a 20% chance to miss.

magmar also has a scary fighting move maybe mention

**Pineco**: Pineco can switch into Porygon on a use of Recover, Ice Beam, or Curse and proceed to easily use Spikes and then either poison Porygon with Toxic or eliminate it outright with Explosion. Graveler and Pupitar are even immune to paralysis from Thunder Wave, so Graveler can attempt to repeatedly fish for critical hits in attempt to KO Curse Porygon or just use Explosion on it, while Pupitar can just break past Curse Porygon with Screech; both lose badly to Ice Beam variants of Porygon though, as the same Ground-typing that grants a paralysis immunity also comes with a weakness to Ice.

[OVERVIEW]

In a landscape dominated by strong offensive Normal-types, Porygon appears outclassed and outgunned by all, especially by Wigglytuff, who is generally the de-facto choice for the role of bulky recovery-using Normal-type that serves as a blanket check to Special Attackers like Xatu, Dewgong, and Chinchou. However, Recover is a saving grace, being one of the best moves in Generation 2 and single-handedly making Porygon a legitimate pick in the metagame. Recover's astonishing 32 PP allows Porygon to function as far bulkier a wall than its stats would show, turning otherwise 3HKOes by unboosted attacks from the likes of Xatu, Octillery, and Stantler into never breaking past a healthy Porygon without critical hits. stantler feels a lil misplaced here as even curse pory is not a switchin to curse deer, even if what u wrote isnt technically wrong. u also mention deer below so maybe j remove it (and maybe add graveler here instead.) Porygon additionally has a solid movepool outside of Recover, as well as a good Special Attack stat of 85 and the overall amazing Normal-typing, allowing it to utilize its access to Recover to the fullest. Porygon serves well as an answer to Xatu and Dewgong, using Recover to heal off any damage while being able to hit them super-effectively or set up Curse in return. same comment as soup re switching into xatu psychic; i dont rly think its that good into gong either since the freeze chances will add up, and ofc thunder doesnt 2hko dewgong so ur having to hit three thunders to break it or alternatively 3hko with +1 dedge, all the while constantly taking ice beams. wiggly is better vs gong. Depending on the set, Porygon can also act as an answer to Dugtrio, Stantler, and Graveler. any porygon set can switch into and wall (outside of boom trade) standard graveler, and running any different graveler would mean no spin or no boom, so i think grav belongs more in the 'never-breaking-past' group. personally id maybe emphasize graveler more in general as it is a very clear cut niche, no other mon walls grav like pory does other than super niche bayleef/eggs/tangela Porygon is also a prime candidate for spreading paralysis with Thunder Wave, using its solid bulk when coupled with Recover and lack of weaknesses outside of the Fighting-type to slow down opposing offensive threats and provide support for slow but dangerous teammates such as Kingler. However, Porygon still has plenty of flaws, the main ones being competition and vulnerability to status. Porygon has very low base stats when compared to other Normal-types like Fearow, Stantler, and Wigglytuff, all who are individually much better than Porygon, primarily Wigglytuff as previously mentioned. Porygon is also the only recovery-using pure Normal-type that cannot serve as an effective check to Chinchou or Ninetales, as any Thunder paralysis or Toxic poison will effectively make Porygon useless; Sludge Bomb's poison rate also prevents Porygon from being a decent check to Weezing. Porygon is also incredibly slow, sitting at only base 40 Speed; the only common Pokemon slower are Graveler, Sudowoodo, and Pineco — this means Porygon is incredibly reliant on spreading paralysis and being forced to repeatedly use Recover instead of using an attacking move, and any critical hits or prior chip damage on the switch-in will likely be enough for foes like Xatu and Octillery to be able to knock Porygon out.

obv up to you @ writing structure but u kind of come back to where u started @ the end of this overview re status and comparing to wigglytuff. if u want, u could maybe reorganize the overview a bit for example starting with your third sentence, "Recover's astonishing 32 PP allows Porygon to function as far bulkier a wall than its stats would show, turning otherwise 3HKOes by unboosted attacks from the likes of Xatu, Octillery, and Stantler into never breaking past a healthy Porygon without critical hits, as well as freeing up a moveslot in comparison to rest + sleep talk; on the other hand, it comes with a vulnerability to status." Then you could compare how Porygon can do better than wiggly against mons without status inducing moves like Graveler, Octillery (esp hp elec), Xatu, [also rapidash and sunny tales but idk if worth mentioning], but fares worse than wiggly against chinchou (magnemite too) toxic ninetales etc. And the moveslot freed by recover allows Porygon to run Thunder Wave, which Wiggly cant rly fit.

[SET COMMENTS]
Set Description
=========

Recover is mandatory as Porygon's best form of healing, and a Porygon without Recover is strictly inferior to every other Normal-type. Thunder and Ice Beam are the best combination of special attacks to hit the most amount of common Pokemon for super-effective damage, such as Xatu, Octillery, Dugtrio, Dewgong, Fearow, and Graveler. maybe Pupitar worth mentioning since its the only one of these that curse pory is bad against, and also can be one of the more dangerous threats to pory in general since it outspeeds, has screech and can flinch with stab rslide, while avoiding the 2hko from ice beam from full. Thunder Wave works to significantly reduce what can safely switch into and take advantage of Porygon, crippling targets like Magmar, Kingler, Flareon, Weezing, and Stantler and Primeape that lack RestTalk. Thunder Wave also is generally a great move to use into basically anything, as it allows Porygon to use its moves much safer as it is now no longer slower than most other Pokemon; the same speed control works great to support slow but powerful teammates that appreciate threats like Xatu and Weezing being slowed down and potentially fully paralyzed, namely Kingler, Curse Stantler, Primeape, and Magmar. However, Thief of course leaves Porygon without the all-around amazing utility of Thunder Wave, having to try and fish for paralysis with the unreliable 30% miss rate and 30% paralysis chance of Thunder; Thief can also only be used once, and not having Leftovers when first attempting to switch into battle with Spikes on the field can make finding entry for Porygon more difficult, so using Thief rather than Thunder Wave is not recommended as the first option for every Porygon team.
(im mostly leaving this alone since i still dont rly understand the purpose of this moveset, sorry.)

Team Options
========

Weezing is the best partner for Porygon, appreciating Porygon's prowess in checking Xatu and Dugtrio while taking on Primeape and Hitmonlee itself and potentially using Explosion to eliminate a Wigglytuff or Ninetales that walls Porygon. Pineco is also a prime teammate for Porygon, as its Spikes wear down bulky walls like Wigglytuff and Ninetales that Porygon struggles with. Fearow and Xatu help to check Primeape, Hitmonlee, Gloom, and RestTalk Stantler while appreciating Porygon's ability to take on Dewgong and Graveler; Porygon can also steal the Leftovers from Wigglytuff or Sudowoodo, which help Fearow and Xatu wallbreak. Rock-types like Sudowoodo and Graveler serve as effective answers to Pineco, Wigglytuff, and Weezing —bar if Weezing has Hidden Power Water— which can take advantage of Porygon, and Porygon can handle Dewgong and —if at high health— Octillery for them; Graveler also clears away Spikes with Rapid Spin, making entry for Porygon easier. Octillery itself is a great ally for Porygon, stopping Ninetales and Sudowoodo in their tracks, and Octillery and Porygon can help each other in checking Xatu, other Octillery, and Ground-types like Dugtrio and Graveler so that neither get overwhelmed too quickly. Pokemon that take advantage of paralysis, such as Kingler, Curse + Light Screen Stantler, and Primeape all make for good win conditions that like having Thunder Wave Porygon around to facilitate setup and check Xatu. Wigglytuff also loves having Porygon as a teammate, making setup easier for Wigglytuff with Thunder Wave and checking Sudowoodo and Graveler for it, and Wigglytuff can answer Chinchou unlike Porygon which is afraid of Thunder paralysis. Ninetales is also a very synergistic option to pair with Porygon, as Porygon can switch into and threaten out Octillery, Dewgong, and Graveler while Ninetales walls Weezing and is a great answer to Magnemite. Gloom also works well with Porygon, halting Primeape, Hitmonlee, Chinchou, and Octillery that lack Ice Beam, while Porygon can switch into Xatu and Dewgong for Gloom; the two also combine to pair a potentially overwhelming paralysis-spamming core, with Gloom having Stun Spore and Porygon having Thunder Wave.

[SET COMMENTS]
Set Description
=========

Curse Porygon may appear outclassed by other Curse Normal-types, mainly Wigglytuff and the rare Dunsparce, especially since they also have access to paralysis moves — Thunder Wave or Body Slam and Glare, respectively. Porygon makes up for this in waves by having Recover, allowing it to find setup and switch-in opportunities far easier; Recover only using one moveslot also means Porygon can fit both reliable recovery and the valuable paralysis spreading of Thunder Wave, whereas Wigglytuff and Dunsparce solely miss Sleep Talk if using a paralysis move, as their best self-healing move is Rest —the exception being Body Slam Wigglytuff, which retains Sleep Talk. (also specifically the fact that pory can switch into graveler/sudo, which wiggly or any other mono normal attacker could never dream of; up to u if u want to mention that here or in overview or both or w e) The combination of Curse, Thunder Wave, and Recover is so notable because Thunder Wave grants Porygon easier setup opportunities as it will be faster than opposing Pokemon despite lowering its own speed with Curse and can easily use Recover to heal off hits, and any full paralysis will be additional free turns where Porygon does not have to use Recover and can continue powering up with Curse or just launch a boosted Double-Edge (this ability to choose its moves each turn based on if the opp fully paras or etc is ofc also smthg it has over wiggly, but idk if that needs to be mentioned since it might be obvious). The recoil of Double-Edge is negligible compared to Return due to Porygon's access to Recover, and Porygon needs as much power as it can get with such a low Attack stat. imo curse's defensive merits should be discussed. curse allows Porygon to switch into standard Sudowoodo, which boltbeam pory cannot do. (therefore it maybe has better synergy with things like Fearow, sunny Ninetales, stalk Persian etc.) curse also allows pory to duel other curse users such as stantler and non-bslam wigglytuff, rather than being forced out. lastly, curse can protect pory from being revenge killed by various physical attackers, dugtrio and fearow included, but also primeape and hitmonlee which need luck to beat even +1 pory if it is healthy (or at least correctly predict twave with sub in ape's case) since they cant break pory's twave + recover combo without cc crits or bslam para respectively.
idk if all of these defensive benefits have to be mentioned but there needs to be some sort of mention of the defensive benefits.

if u think it makes sense u could do a comparison what are the pros/cons of curse compared to bolt beam, since correct me if im wrong but i think pory plays similarly in a lot of ways u use recover and twave to stay healthy and get free turns which u then use to either attack with bolt beam or setup/attack with curse edge.

Team Options
========

(curse pory would make most sense with sunny Ninetales prob since pory switches into grav/sudo to cover the inability to toxic them, while curse pory can also take adv of having sun up in front of oct to generate free turns and also protects pory from surf crits. if theres any place in like any other mon's analysis where sunny ninetales is worth mentioning despite obv needing more testing, its here.)

would j combining team options into one allowed? like do set 1, description, set 2, description, then team options then other options. i dont see anything in analysis writing guidelines that prohibit this and since as u noted the team options are p much the same for both sets.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Ice Beam can be used in place of Thunder Wave on the Curse set in order to let Porygon break past otherwise would-be walls such as Graveler and Pupitar idk if grav needs to be mentioned here since u switch into it regardless and not like ib prevents it booming on u anyway + if its after a curse ur slower so its not rly luring grav either + if u start cursing that also pressures grav to boom as well as immediately threaten Xatu and especially Dugtrio dedge does almost the same as ib to dug anyway. However, this makes it significantly more difficult for Porygon to successfully set up with Curse, as the opposing Pokemon will likely always be faster than it and it means that after using Double-Edge it may be in range of a KO due to taking a strong special attack before moving and the recoil that comes from using Double-Edge; it also means Porygon can no longer support other slow teammates like Octillery. Agility lol can also be used over Thunder Wave on the Curse set, retaining the ability for Porygon to outspeed its foes despite using Curse, but it drastically reduces the mid-game utility of Thunder Wave and Agility has to repeatedly be used to boost Porygon's speed as using Curse will continue to lower it, which can open up Porygon to critical hits (idk why agility on the curse set more than on bolt beam but w/e lol). Nightmare has potential over Thunder Wave on the BoltBeam set to reduce the safety in switching in an otherwise wall, especially with Spikes on the field and some prior chip damage, primarily aiming for Wigglytuff, Ninetales, and RestTalk Stantler or Persian. or maybe this is less bad alongside dedge twave, nightmare damage theoretically making up for the lack of power due to no curse. but its whatever these are obv not good options anyway lol Once again though, it means sacrificing the all-around great utility of Thunder Wave, and Nightmare will likely be useless in matchups where BoltBeam Porygon does not encounter one of these foes, as other Rest users like Xatu, Fearow, and Octillery lose to Porygon anyways; Thief also tends to be a superior option for this purpose.
if the standard for oo's is this low lol, maybe barrier deserves a mention somewhere. not entirely sure what the moveset would be lol but barrier prevents screech from breaking through 1v1 tho obviously u still arent a switchin to pupitar regardless lols, and curse is prob better vs dug overall since +1 dedge does 78-92%. barrier could also be funny on a predicted boom? idk lol. maybe reflect to support the team and again help vs screech users as u can set reflect on the screech and then switch out with reflect protection, ofc the 5 turns will end quickly as always + theres no moveslot. psych up could also maybe do something? like some sort of emergency if u get behind multiple curses situation. but like curse pory's best thing is being able to get ahead in a curse war over time due to full paras, psych up gives that up.
(tbc do whatever u want with this section lol j make clear that all the other options are BAD.)

Checks and Counters
===================

However, Double-Edge and Return variants of Wigglytuff stalemate with Curse Porygon (and will likely lose to it on pp due to recover and twave's 32pp each + pory can make rest fail by not attacking), though Body Slam variants can easily paralyze Porygon and break past it im not rly sure how that matchup goes but bslam is weak, its a roll to 4hko when boosts are equal, id imagine still wiggly favored overall but maybe j remove the word easily? idk do what u think lol). Wigglytuff does not enjoy having its Leftovers stolen by Thief Porygon, though it means Porygon will also not be carrying Thunder Wave and will have a more difficult time switching into battle if it has not used Thief yet. Wigglytuff can also be frozen by Ice Beam, though this is highly unreliable and Wigglytuff will likely be asleep for a notable portion of the time it is in battle, preventing Ice Beam from freezing.

**Ninetales**: Ninetales basically counters Porygon, easily walling BoltBeam variants with its massive Special Defense and lack of weakness to Electric or Ice, and can essentially reduce Porygon to fodder with poison from Toxic. Curse Porygon is not walled by Ninetales, but hates poison so much that it is still deathly afraid of Ninetales. Ninetales also always carries Rest and commonly Sleep Talk in addition to prevent Thunder Wave paralysis, and if it doesn't pack Sleep Talk then it will be running Roar, which prevents Curse Porygon from even setting up in the first place. maybe still note that tales takes 32-38% from dedge after spikes on switchin, idk obv pory doesnt get much chance to chip things on switchin since its usually recovering lol. fwiw, pory does check sunny ninetales, while wigglytuff doesnt rly bc flame in sun 3hkos up to u if u want to be referencing sunny tales lol.

**Magnemite**: Magnemite is not weak to any of Thunder, Ice Beam, or Double-Edge (resists all of them) and usually uses Thunder, which if it lands has a 30% chance to effectively end Porygon on the spot with paralysis. Magnemite also almost always uses Rest and Sleep Talk to heal off paralysis and remain an incredibly dangerous threat while sleeping, and Porygon giving it entry is not ideal. However, Magnemite despises having its Leftovers stolen by Thief, as with Spikes on the field and no passive healing it is much more liable to being 3HKOed by Xatu and Fearow on the switch and thus failing to have any defensive value. While Magnemite can heal off paralysis with Rest, it still does not like being paralyzed, as if it is at high health it will likely have little reason to use Rest and thus can be susceptible to full paralysis and also will become slower than everything. curse porygon can take on magnemite in some cases if necessary, as +1 dedge 3hkos despite being resisted, and Thunder accuracy is effectively reduced to 53% through paralysis. since mag doesnt have real checks anyway sometimes just fighting it with a +1 pory is no worse than other available plays.

**Fighting-types**: Primeape and Hitmonlee come close to a flat-out OHKO on Porygon with their STAB Cross Chop and High Jump Kick —respectively— and any minor chip damage, usually from Spikes, will push them over the line. Primeape and Hitmonlee are not weak to either Thunder or Ice Beam, so RestTalk Hitmonlee hard walls BoltBeam Porygon while Primeape can come in on a usage of Ice Beam or Recover and proceed to set up a free Substitute (ice beam is a roll to break the sub so boltbeam pory cant reliably break it even if predicted correctly), blocking Thunder Wave paralysis and preventing the Porygon user from attempting to switch around predicted moves; Primeape also occasionally runs RestTalk itself, which also walls BoltBeam Porygon. Primeape can even just crit right through any Defense boosts from Curse Porygon, as Cross Chop has a boosted critical hit rate. However, non-RestTalk Primeape despises paralysis from Thunder Wave, and Hitmonlee does not enjoy paralysis before it uses Rest. Primeape using Cross Chop to hit Porygon can also be exploited with a free switch to Xatu or Weezing, and Primeape may even eventually run out of PP; Cross Chop also has a 20% chance to miss. (Primeape is 2HKOd by +1 pory dedge, hitmon is a roll to be OHKOd at +2) Additionally, while not a Fighting-type itself, Magmar has a high Attack stat of 95 and access to Cross Chop, which is a guarantee OHKO on Porygon if it scores a critical hit; however, this is very risky for the Magmar user, as Magmar hates being paralyzed, and Cross Chop can easily miss or not land a critical hit. (magmar doesnt run sub right, which is relevant here. magmar also ofc is 2HKOd at +1.)

**Pineco**: Pineco can switch into Porygon on a use of Recover, Ice Beam, or Curse and proceed to easily use Spikes and then either poison Porygon with Toxic or eliminate it outright with Explosion. However, Pineco can be 2HKOed by Thunder with even the slightest amount of chip, usually coming from the Porygon user's own Spikes, and if Pineco is paralyzed by Thunder Wave or Thunder as it switches in, the Porygon user can switch to their own Pineco and proceed to spam Rapid Spin until the opponent's Pineco is paralyzed and then freely use Spikes, proceed to use Rapid Spin until another full paralysis occurs or Toxic is used, then use Explosion and win the Spikes war by a mile.

**Weezing**: Weezing is faster than Porygon and does not take significant damage from Double-Edge or Thunder, in return fishing for poison from Sludge Bomb while doing solid damage or outright taking out Porygon with the use of Explosion. However, Weezing hates being paralyzed by Thunder Wave or having its Leftovers stolen by Thief, prefers to stay healthy in order to take hits from faster threats like Fearow and Primeape, and using Explosion means sacrificing Weezing just to eliminate Porygon, which can leave its team vulnerable to Primeape if Porygon chooses to partner with it.

**Rock-types**: Sudowoodo can Curse up in front of Porygon as it resists Double-Edge, is not weak to Thunder or Ice Beam, and has plenty of bulk. However, Sudowoodo does not enjoy being paralyzed by Thunder Wave or having its Leftovers taken by Thief and has to resort to sacrificing itself with Self-Destruct to take out Curse Porygon, as otherwise it won't do enough back to Porygon and will slowly get whittled down by Double-Edge and full paralysis, and even if using a RestTalk set Sudowoodo has to try and PP stall Porygon, which can even just result in Sudowoodo getting PP stalled itself (sudo will lose the pp war in a pure 1v1, but can still force pory to use/not use certain moves to help teammates). Graveler and Pupitar are even immune to paralysis from Thunder Wave, so Graveler can attempt to repeatedly fish for critical hits in attempt to KO Curse Porygon (idt this is an option worth mentioning, if pory hasnt cursed yet it has no reason to click curse until u leave it at higher hp by using a move other than eq which u will have to eventually since 32 pp recover >16 pp eq, and if its already used curse then u have to boom p quickly as u cant generally afford it getting past +2) or just use Explosion on it, while Pupitar can easily break past Curse Porygon with Screech; both lose badly to Ice Beam variants of Porygon though, as the same Ground-typing that grants a paralysis immunity also comes with a weakness to Ice Pupitar does not rly lose badly since outspeeds Ice Beam doesnt 2hko potential rs flinch fishing as noted above.

i kinda feel like the rocks should be separated, idk? maybe pupitar in its own section and then like "other boom users" or smthg as another section. sudo uses sdstrct so cant technically say other exploders ig. all three have pretty different mus vs pory but sudo and grav are at least somewhat similar against curse pory so maybe they can be grouped. pupitar is j so so different with the speed tier and ability to 2HKO after one screech with a 30% (or 27% after acc) flinch move.

1 changing some inaccurate or misleading statements about porygon's ground matchups (porygon always checks graveler, not sometimes, in overview; pupitar doesnt 'lose badly' to ice beam porygon, in checks and counters under rock types; the sentence saying that curse pory needs ice beam to immediately threaten dugtrio even though unboosted dedge already 2hkos, in other options) 2 adding something about curse's defensive benefits in that set description.

(implied alreadyby being slashed second) Recover is mandatory as Porygon's best form of healing, and a Porygon without Recover is strictly inferior to every other Normal-type.

Team Options

Weezing is the best partner for Porygon, appreciating Porygon's prowess in checking Xatu and Dugtrio while taking on Primeape and Hitmonlee itself and potentially using Explosion to eliminate a Wigglytuff or Ninetales that walls Porygon. Pineco is also a prime teammate for Porygon, as its Spikes wear down bulky walls like Wigglytuff and Ninetales, (comma) that which Porygon struggles with. Fearow and Xatu help to check Primeape, Hitmonlee, Gloom, and RestTalk Stantler while appreciating Porygon's ability to take on Dewgong and Graveler; Porygon can also steal the Leftovers from Wigglytuff or Sudowoodo, which help helps Fearow and Xatu wallbreak. Rock-types like Sudowoodo and Graveler serve as effective answers to Pineco, Wigglytuff, and Weezing (space) —bar if Weezing has Hidden Power Water— (space) which can take advantage of Porygon, and Porygon can handle Dewgong and (space) —if at high health— (space) Octillery for them; Graveler also clears away Spikes with Rapid Spin, making entry for Porygon easier. Pokemon that take advantage of paralysis, such as Kingler, Curse + Light Screen Stantler, and Primeape all make for good win conditions wincons that like having Thunder Wave Porygon around to facilitate setup and check Xatu. Wigglytuff also loves having Porygon as a teammate, making as Porygon makes setup easier for Wigglytuff with Thunder Wave and checking checks Sudowoodo and Graveler for it, and Wigglytuff can answer Chinchou unlike Porygon, (comma) which is afraid of Thunder paralysis. Ninetales is also a very synergistic option to pair with Porygon, as Porygon can switch into and threaten out Octillery, Dewgong, and Graveler while Ninetales walls Weezing and is a great answer to Magnemite. Gloom also works well with Porygon, halting Primeape, Hitmonlee, Chinchou, and Octillery that lack Ice Beam, (comma) while Porygon can switch into Xatu and Dewgong for Gloom; the two also combine to pair a potentially overwhelming potentially-overwhelming, paralysis-spamming core, with Gloom having Stun Spore and Porygon having Thunder Wave.

Set Description

Curse Porygon may appear outclassed by other Curse Normal-types, mainly Wigglytuff and the rare Dunsparce, especially since they also have access to paralysis moves (space) — (space) Thunder Wave or Body Slam and Glare, respectively. Porygon makes up for this in waves by having Recover, allowing it to find setup and switch-in opportunities far easier more easily; Recover only using one moveslot also means Porygon can fit both reliable recovery and the valuable paralysis spreading of Thunder Wave, whereas Wigglytuff and Dunsparce solely miss Sleep Talk if using a paralysis move, as their best self-healing move is Rest (space) —the exception being Body Slam Wigglytuff, which retains Sleep Talk. Porygon also differentiates itself from these two by being able to actively switch into Sudowoodo and Graveler, boosting up with Curse and and using Recover to stay healthy, forcing them to use Self-Destruct or Explosion, respectively, to take Porygon out. The combination of Curse, Thunder Wave, and Recover is so notable because Thunder Wave grants Porygon easier setup opportunities, (comma) as it will be faster than opposing Pokemon despite lowering its own speed Speed with Curse and can easily use Recover to heal off hits, and any full paralysis will be additional free turns where Porygon does not have to use Recover and can continue powering up with Curse or just launch a boosted Double-Edge. The recoil of Double-Edge is negligible compared to Return due to Porygon's access to Recover, and Porygon needs as much power as it can get with such a low Attack stat. Curse also importantly allows Porygon to be a decent switch switch-in to Stantler if at full health, avoiding a 2HKO even with Spikes up and paralyzing Stantler with Thunder Wave, then proceeding to boost up with Curse and beat Stantler — Stantler; RestTalk Stantler cannot match Porygon's boosts and can just give Porygon ample setup opportunity, (comma) while Curse + Light Screen Stantler hates being paralyzed.

Team Options
========

Solid teammates for Curse Porygon are largely similar to that of the BoltBeam set; Weezing, Xatu, and Fearow, (comma) which can all take on Primeape and Hitmonlee, Hitmonlee; Octillery shuts down Ninetales and Sudowoodo, Sudowoodo; Sudowoodo and especially Graveler help prevent Pineco, Wigglytuff, and Weezing from using Porygon to set up or launch attacks, attacks; Ninetales stops Weezing and Magnemite, Magnemite; and Pokemon that enjoy paralysis and Porygon's Xatu-checking capabilities, (comma) like Kingler and Primeape, (comma) make for good partners as well. Fearow, RestTalk Persian, Fire Blast Weezing, and Sunny Day Ninetales get a special mention, (comma) as they appreciate Porygon's ability to force Sudowoodo and Graveler to sacrifice themself themselves to beat it.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Ice Beam can be used in place of Thunder Wave on the Curse set in order to let Porygon break past Pupitar as well as immediately threaten Xatu and especially Dugtrio without worrying about taking recoil. However, this makes it significantly more difficult for Porygon to successfully set up with Curse, as the opposing Pokemon will likely always be faster than it, (comma) and it means that after using Double-Edge, (comma) it may be in range of a KO due to taking a strong special attack before moving and the recoil that comes from using Double-Edge; it also means Porygon can no longer support other slow teammates, (comma) like Octillery. Agility can also be used over Thunder Wave on the Curse set, retaining the ability for Porygon to outspeed its foes despite using Curse, but it drastically reduces Porygon’s Porygon's (wrong apostrophe) mid-game utility with the loss of of Thunder Wave, (comma) and Agility has to repeatedly be used to boost Porygon's speed Speed, as using Curse will continue to lower it, which can open up Porygon to critical hits or Ice Beam freezes from the likes of Dewgong. Nightmare has potential over Thunder Wave on the BoltBeam set to reduce the safety in switching in an otherwise wall, especially with Spikes on the field and some prior chip damage, primarily aiming for Rest Wigglytuff, Ninetales, and RestTalk Stantler, (comma) or and Persian. Once again though, it means sacrificing the all-around all-round great utility of Thunder Wave, and Nightmare will likely be useless in matchups where BoltBeam Porygon does not encounter one of these foes, as other Rest users like Xatu, Fearow, and Octillery lose to Porygon anyways; Thief also tends to be a superior option for this purpose.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Wigglytuff**: Wigglytuff walls the BoltBeam set, not being weak to Thunder or Ice Beam, (comma) and Porygon's lack of STAB on either move means it will not be hitting hard enough to significantly damage Wigglytuff, even with Spikes on the field. Wigglytuff, (comma) meanwhile, (comma) can set up with Curse in its face, easily boosting quickly, (comma) and breaking past Porygon, (comma) and potentially knocking out KOing even more Pokemon. However, Double-Edge and Return variants of Wigglytuff stalemate with Curse Porygon, though Body Slam variants can paralyze Porygon and break past it.

**Ninetales**: Ninetales with Toxic basically counters Porygon, easily walling BoltBeam variants with its massive Special Defense and lack of weakness to Electric or Ice, and it can essentially reduce Porygon to fodder with poison. Curse Porygon is not walled by Ninetales, (comma) but hates poison so much that it is still deathly afraid of Ninetales. Ninetales also always carries Rest and commonly Sleep Talk in addition to prevent Thunder Wave paralysis, and if it doesn't pack Sleep Talk, (comma) then it will be running Roar, which prevents Curse Porygon from even setting up in the first place. However, Ninetales without Toxic is walled by Porygon, though it still walls BoltBeam variants of Porygon back.

**Magnemite**: Magnemite is not weak to any of Thunder, Ice Beam, or Double-Edge and usually runs Thunder, which, (comma) if it lands, (comma) has a 30% chance to effectively end Porygon on the spot with paralysis.

**Fighting-types**: Primeape and Hitmonlee come close to a flat-out OHKO on Porygon with their STAB Cross Chop and High Jump Kick, respectively, and any minor chip damage, usually from Spikes, will push them over the line. Primeape and Hitmonlee are not weak to either Thunder or Ice Beam, so RestTalk Hitmonlee hard walls BoltBeam Porygon while Primeape can come in on a usage of Ice Beam or Recover and proceed to set up a free Substitute, blocking Thunder Wave paralysis and preventing the Porygon user from attempting to switch around predicted moves; Primeape also occasionally runs RestTalk itself, which also walls lets it wall BoltBeam Porygon. Primeape can even just crit critically hit right through any Defense boosts from Curse Porygon, as Cross Chop has a boosted critical hit rate. However, non-RestTalk Primeape despises paralysis from Thunder Wave, and Hitmonlee does not enjoy paralysis before it uses Rest. Primeape using Cross Chop to hit Porygon can also be exploited with a free switch to Xatu or Weezing, and Primeape may even eventually run out of PP; Cross Chop also has a 20% chance to miss, and both Primeape and Hitmonlee are 2HKOed by a Curse-boosted Double-Edge and cannot KO Porygon back if it is healthy. Additionally, while not a Fighting-type itself, Magmar has a high Attack stat of 95 and access to Cross Chop, which is a guarantee guaranteed OHKO on Porygon if it scores a critical hit; however, this is very risky for the Magmar user, as Magmar hates being paralyzed, and Cross Chop can easily miss or not land a critical hit.

**Rock-types**: Sudowoodo can use Curse up in front of Porygon, (comma) as it resists Double-Edge, is not weak to Thunder or Ice Beam, and has plenty of bulk. However, Sudowoodo does not enjoy being paralyzed by Thunder Wave or having its Leftovers taken by Thief and has to resort to sacrificing itself with Self-Destruct to take out Curse Porygon, as otherwise it won't do enough back to Porygon and will slowly get whittled down by Double-Edge and full paralysis, and even if using a RestTalk set Sudowoodo has to try and PP stall Porygon, which can even just result in Sudowoodo getting PP stalled itself. Graveler and Pupitar are even immune to paralysis from Thunder Wave, but Graveler cannot break past Porygon without well-timed critical hits or taking itself out with Porygon by exploding using Explosion on it due to being slower. Pupitar, (comma) meanwhile, (comma) is not 2HKOed by Ice Beam from full health, can easily break past Curse Porygon with Screech, and is faster, faster; however, (comma) it cannot serve as an effective switch-in to Porygon with Ice Beam unless it is comfortable trading most of its health to take a large chunk out of Porygon.

[OVERVIEW]

In a landscape dominated by strong offensive Normal-types, Porygon appears outclassed and outgunned by all, especially by Wigglytuff, who which (refer to Pokemon as "which" not "who") is generally the de-facto choice for the role of bulky, (comma) recovery-using Normal-type that serves as a blanket check to Special Attackers special attackers like Xatu, Dewgong, and Chinchou. However, Recover is a saving grace, being one of the best moves in Generation 2 and single-handedly making Porygon a legitimate pick in the metagame. Recover's astonishing 32 PP allows Porygon to function as far bulkier a wall than its stats would show, turning otherwise 3HKOes 3HKOs by unboosted attacks from the likes of Xatu, Octillery, and Graveler into attacks that are never breaking past a healthy Porygon without critical hits, as well as freeing up a moveslot since Porygon does not have to use both Rest and Sleep Talk. Porygon additionally has a solid movepool outside of Recover, as well as a good Special Attack stat of 85 (dex info) and the overall amazing Normal-typing, allowing it to utilize its access to Recover to the fullest. Porygon serves well as an answer to Xatu and Dewgong, using Recover to heal off any damage while being able to hit them super-effectively super effectively or set up Curse in return. Porygon can also help to answer Dugtrio and Curse Stantler, 2HKOing the former with Double-Edge or Ice Beam and paralyzing the latter. Porygon is additionally a prime candidate for spreading paralysis with Thunder Wave, using its solid bulk when coupled with Recover and lack of weaknesses outside of the Fighting-type Fighting to slow down opposing offensive threats and provide support for slow but dangerous teammates such as Kingler. However, Porygon still has plenty of flaws, the main ones being competition and vulnerability to status. Porygon has very low base stats when compared to other Normal-types like Fearow, Stantler, and Wigglytuff, all who of which are individually much better than Porygon, primarily Wigglytuff as previously mentioned. Porygon is also the only recovery-using pure Normal-type that cannot serve as an effective check to Chinchou or Ninetales, as although Recover is generally far better than RestTalk, it also means Porygon lacks the ability to absorb status, so any Thunder paralysis or Toxic poison will effectively make Porygon useless; Sludge Bomb's poison rate also prevents Porygon from being a decent check to Weezing. Porygon is also incredibly slow, sitting at only base 40 Speed; (dex info) slow; the only common Pokemon slower are Graveler, Sudowoodo, and Pineco, meaning Porygon is incredibly reliant on spreading paralysis and being forced to repeatedly use Recover instead of using an attacking move, massively opening itself up to critical hits, Ice Beam freezes, or Psychic Special Defense drops from the likes of Xatu, Octillery, and Dewgong on the switch or if they choose to stay in.

Recover is mandatory as Porygon's best form of healing, and a Porygon without Recover is strictly inferior to every other Normal-type. (moved to match the set's move order) Thunder and Ice Beam are the best combination of special attacks to hit the most amount of common Pokemon for super-effective super effective damage, such as Xatu, Octillery, Dugtrio, Dewgong, Fearow, and Pupitar. Thunder Wave works to significantly reduce what can safely switch into and take advantage of Porygon, crippling targets like Magmar, Kingler, Flareon, Weezing, and Stantler, (comma) and non-RestTalk Primeape. (period) that lack RestTalk. Thunder Wave also is generally a great move to use into basically anything, as it allows Porygon to use its moves much safer more safely, as it is now no longer slower than most other Pokemon; the same speed control works great to support slow but powerful teammates that appreciate threats like Xatu and Weezing being slowed down and potentially fully paralyzed, namely Kingler, Curse Stantler, Primeape, and Magmar. This particular Porygon set is a great threat to many Xatu + Dugtrio Spikes archetypes (space) —one (no spaces around em dashes) of the most common and dominant team structures in the tier— (space) as the only Pokemon commonly used on them that can handle BoltBeam Porygon without being ruined by Thunder Wave is Wigglytuff, who which will still not be is still not on a majority of them. Wigglytuff being the only common answer to Porygon on this team style is the main reason why Thief is a good consideration; Wigglytuff's ability to take hits is significantly reduced without Leftovers, especially with Spikes on the field, and Porygon has good enough Special Attack and super-effective super effective coverage to be able to chip down threats that can answer a Porygon that lacks Thunder Wave, (comma) like Weezing, (comma) over the course of a game, which are also further being chipped by Spikes. However, Thief of course leaves Porygon without the all-around all-round amazing utility of Thunder Wave, having meaning it has to try and fish for paralysis with the unreliable 30% miss rate and 30% paralysis chance of Thunder; Thief can also only be used once, and not having Leftovers when first attempting to switch into battle with Spikes on the field can make finding entry for Porygon more difficult, difficult. so using Thief rather than Thunder Wave is not recommended as the first option for every Porygon team.

Thunder and Ice Beam are the best combination of special attacks to hit the most amount highest number of common Pokemon for super effective damage, such as Xatu, Octillery, Dugtrio, Dewgong, Fearow, and Pupitar. Thunder Wave works to significantly reduce significantly reduces what can safely switch into and take advantage of Porygon, crippling targets like Magmar, Kingler, Flareon, Weezing, Stantler, and Primeape that lack RestTalk. Thunder Wave also is generally a great move to use into basically anything, as it actually outspeeding foes (i imagine this is fine?) allows Porygon to use its moves much more safely as it is no longer slower than most other Pokemon; the same speed control works great to support slow but powerful teammates that appreciate threats like Xatu and Weezing being slowed down and potentially fully paralyzed, namely Kingler, Curse Stantler, Primeape, and Magmar, which appreciate threats like Xatu and Weezing being slowed down and potentially fully paralyzed. This particular Porygon set is a great threat to many Xatu + Dugtrio Spikes archetypes—one teams—one of the most common and dominant team structures in the tier—as the only Pokemon commonly used on them their only common Pokemon that can handle BoltBeam Porygon without being ruined by Thunder Wave is Wigglytuff, which is still not on a majority of them. Wigglytuff being the only common answer to Porygon on this team style Still, this potential to face Wigglytuff is the main reason why Thief is a good consideration; Wigglytuff's ability to take hits is significantly reduced without Leftovers, especially with Spikes on the field, and field. Also, Porygon has good enough Special Attack and super effective coverage to be able to gradually (I imagine this works?) chip down threats that can answer a Porygon that lacks Thunder Wave, like Weezing, over the course of a game, which are also further being chipped by Spikes. However, Thief of course leaves Porygon without the all-round amazing utility of Thunder Wave, meaning it has to try and fish for paralysis with the unreliable 30% miss rate and 30% paralysis chance of Thunder, a 21% chance factoring in the move's accuracy; (optional / changeable) Thief can also only be used once, steal one item, and not having Leftovers when first attempting to switch into battle with Spikes on the field in through Spikes can make finding entry for Porygon more difficult.

Team Options

Weezing is the best partner for Porygon, appreciating Porygon's prowess in checking Xatu and Dugtrio while taking on Primeape and Hitmonlee itself, (AC) and potentially using it may use (I imagine this works?) Explosion to eliminate a Wigglytuff or Ninetales that walls Porygon. Pineco is also a prime teammate for Porygon, as its Spikes wear wears down bulky walls like Wigglytuff and Ninetales, (AC) which Porygon struggles with. (changed semicolon to period) Graveler also clears away Spikes with Rapid Spin, making entry for Porygon easier. Octillery itself is a great ally for Porygon, stopping Ninetales and Sudowoodo in their tracks, and Octillery and Porygon can help each other in checking Xatu, other Octillery, and Ground-types like Dugtrio and Graveler so that neither get gets overwhelmed too quickly. Pokemon Good wincons (I imagine this works?) that take advantage of paralysis, such as Kingler, Curse + Light Screen Stantler, and Primeape, (AC) all make for good wincons that like having Thunder Wave Porygon around to facilitate setup and check Xatu. Set Description

Curse Porygon may appear outclassed by other Curse Normal-types, mainly Wigglytuff and the rare Dunsparce, especially since they also have access to learn paralysis moves—Thunder Wave or Body Slam and Glare, respectively. Porygon makes up for this (pls somehow/somewhere specify what 'this' is – the flaw of porygon that makes it 'appear outclassed', eg 'its low stats' if appropriate) in waves by having Recover, allowing it to find setup and switch-in opportunities far more easily; Recover only using one moveslot also means Porygon can fit both reliable recovery and the valuable paralysis spreading of Thunder Wave, whereas Wigglytuff and Dunsparce solely miss Sleep Talk if using a paralysis move, as their best self-healing move is Rest—the exception being Body Slam Wigglytuff, which retains Sleep Talk but can't spread paralysis as reliably. (I imagine this makes sense?) Porygon also differentiates itself from these two by being able to actively switch into Sudowoodo and Graveler, boosting up with Curse and and using Recover to stay healthy, forcing them to use Self-Destruct or Explosion, respectively, to take Porygon out. (maybe worth specifying these pokemon are usually more valuable than porygon, so the trade is good for you, assuming that is true–that's the implication i got from this analysis, anyway) The combination of Curse, Thunder Wave, and Recover is so also notable because Thunder Wave grants Porygon easier setup opportunities, as it will be faster than opposing Pokemon means Porygon will outspeed foes despite lowering its own Speed with Curse and can easily use Recover to heal off hits, and any full paralysis will be additional free turns a free turn where Porygon does not have to use Recover, (AC) and can letting it continue powering up with Curse or just launch a boosted Double-Edge. The recoil of Double-Edge is negligible a negligible drawback compared to Return's lower power due to Porygon's access to Recover, and Porygon needs as much power as it can get with such a low Attack stat. Curse also importantly allows Porygon to be makes Porygon a decent switch-in to Stantler if at full health, avoiding a 2HKO even with Spikes up and paralyzing Stantler with Thunder Wave, proceeding to boost up with Curse and beat Stantler—RestTalk it. RestTalk Stantler cannot match Porygon's boosts and can just give Porygon ample setup opportunity, (AC) while Curse + Light Screen Stantler hates being paralyzed.

Team Options
========

Solid teammates for Curse Porygon are Weezing, Xatu, and Fearow, which can all take on Primeape and Hitmonlee; Octillery shuts down Ninetales and Sudowoodo; Sudowoodo and especially Graveler help prevent Pineco, Wigglytuff, and Weezing from using Porygon to set up or launch attacks; and Ninetales stops Weezing and Magnemite; and Magnemite. Pokemon that enjoy Porygon's paralysis-spreading and Porygon's Xatu-checking capabilities, like Kingler and Primeape, make for good partners as well. Fearow, RestTalk Persian, Fire Blast Weezing, and Sunny Day Ninetales get a special mention as teammates, (unless you meant 'as appreciators of paralysis' or something to that effect, in which case you should specify so in some way) as they appreciate Porygon's ability to force Sudowoodo and Graveler to sacrifice themselves to beat it.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Ice Beam can be used in place of Thunder Wave on the Curse set in order to let Porygon break past Pupitar, (AC) as well as immediately threatening Xatu and especially Dugtrio without worrying about taking recoil. However, this makes it significantly more difficult for Porygon to successfully set up with Curse, as the opposing Pokemon will likely always be faster than it, and it means that it. Thus, after using Double-Edge, it may be in range of a KO KO range due to taking a strong special attack before moving and the recoil that comes from using Double-Edge; it moving, alongside Double-Edge recoil; lacking Thunder Wave also means Porygon can no longer support other slow teammates, like Octillery. Agility can also be used over Thunder Wave on the Curse set, retaining the ability for Porygon Porygon's ability to outspeed its foes despite using Curse, but it drastically reduces Porygon's mid-game utility with the loss of of Thunder Wave, and Agility has to must repeatedly be used to boost Porygon's Speed used, as using Curse will continue to lower it, its Speed, which can open up Porygon to critical hits or Ice Beam freezes from the likes of Dewgong. (maybe worth clarifying why youd ever use agility over twave - i dont really get when you would, here, given those disadvantages) Nightmare has potential over Thunder Wave on the BoltBeam set to reduce the safety in switching in an otherwise erstwhile wall, especially with Spikes on the field and some prior chip damage, primarily aiming for RestTalk Wigglytuff, Ninetales, Stantler, or Persian. Once again though, it means sacrificing the all-around great utility of Thunder Wave, and Nightmare will likely be useless in matchups where BoltBeam if Porygon does not encounter one of these foes, as other Rest users like Xatu, Fearow, and Octillery lose to Porygon anyways; Thief also tends to be a superior option for this purpose. against these checks.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Wigglytuff**: Wigglytuff walls the BoltBeam set, not being weak to Thunder or Ice Beam, and Porygon's lack of STAB on either move means it will not be hitting hard enough to significantly damage Wigglytuff, even with Spikes on the field. Wigglytuff does not enjoy having its Leftovers stolen by Thief Porygon, though it Thief Porygon stealing its Leftovers, though Thief also means Porygon will also not be carrying Thunder Wave, (AC) and it will have a more difficult time switching into battle if it has not used Thief yet. Wigglytuff can also be frozen by Ice Beam, though this is highly unreliable, (AC) and Wigglytuff will likely be asleep for a notable portion of the time it is in battle, preventing Ice Beam from freezing.

However, Magnemite despises having its Leftovers stolen by Thief, as Thief stealing its Leftovers because, with Spikes on the field and no passive healing, (AC) it is much more liable to being 3HKOed by Xatu and Fearow on the switch and thus failing switch. Thus, it can fail (phrasing here tinkerable if desired) to have any defensive value. While Magnemite can heal off paralysis with Rest, it still does not like being paralyzed, as paralyzed; if it is at high health, (AC) it will likely have little reason to use Rest and thus can be susceptible to full paralysis, (AC) and also it will become slower than everything.

**Fighting-types**: **Fighting-type Attacks**: Primeape and Hitmonlee come close to a flat-out OHKO on Porygon with their STAB Cross Chop and High Jump Kick, respectively, attacks, and any minor chip damage, usually from Spikes, will push them over the line. Primeape and Hitmonlee They are not weak to either Thunder or Ice Beam, so RestTalk Hitmonlee hard walls BoltBeam Porygon, (AC) while Primeape can come in on a usage of Ice Beam or Recover and proceed to set up a free Substitute, blocking Thunder Wave paralysis and preventing the Porygon user from attempting to switch effectively switching around predicted moves. (changed semicolon to period) Primeape also occasionally runs RestTalk itself, which also lets it wall BoltBeam Porygon. Primeape It can even just critically hit right through any Defense boosts from Curse Porygon, as Cross Chop has a boosted critical hit rate. (maybe worth specifying the rate) However, non-RestTalk Primeape despises paralysis from Thunder Wave, and Hitmonlee does not enjoy paralysis before it uses Rest. Primeape using Cross Chop to hit Porygon can also be exploited with a free switch to Xatu or Weezing, and Primeape may even eventually run out of PP; its 8 PP. Cross Chop also has a 20% chance to miss, and both Primeape and Hitmonlee are 2HKOed by a Curse-boosted Double-Edge and Double-Edge; they cannot OHKO (I imagine this works?) Porygon back if it is healthy. Additionally, while not a Fighting-type itself, Magmar has a high Attack stat and access to Cross Chop, which is a guaranteed OHKO on Porygon if it scores a critical hit; however, this is very risky for the Magmar user, as Magmar hates being paralyzed, and Cross Chop can easily miss or not land a critical hit. (you could specify accuracy-adjusted crit chance here if you wanted, but i wont bc of chance i misunderstand pastgen crit rates)

**Pineco**: Pineco can switch into Porygon on a use of Recover, Ice Beam, or Curse, (AC) and proceed to easily use Spikes, (AC) and then either poison Porygon with Toxic or eliminate it outright with Explosion. However, Pineco can be 2HKOed by Thunder Thunder can 2HKO Pineco with even the slightest amount of chip damage, usually coming from the Porygon user's own Spikes, and if Spikes. If Pineco is paralyzed by Thunder Wave or Thunder as it switches in, the Porygon user can switch to their own Pineco and proceed to spam Rapid Spin until the opponent's Pineco is paralyzed and then fully paralyzed. Pineco then can freely use Spikes, proceed to use Rapid Spin until another full paralysis occurs or Toxic is used, and then use Explosion and win the Spikes war by a mile.

**Weezing**: Weezing is faster than Porygon and does not take significant damage from Double-Edge or Thunder, in return fishing for poison from Sludge Bomb while doing solid damage or outright taking out Porygon with the use of Explosion. However, Weezing hates being paralyzed by taking Thunder Wave or having its Leftovers stolen by Thief, prefers to stay healthy in order to take hits from faster threats like Fearow and Primeape, and has defensive responsibilities beyond handling Porygon; (I imagine this works? changeable, eg by removing 'defensive') using Explosion means sacrificing Weezing just to eliminate Porygon, which can leave its team vulnerable to Primeape if Porygon chooses to partner with it.

**Rock-types**: Sudowoodo can use Curse in front of Porygon, as it resists Double-Edge, is not weak to Thunder or Ice Beam, and has plenty of bulk. However, Sudowoodo does not enjoy being paralyzed by taking Thunder Wave or having its Leftovers taken by Thief, (AC) and it has to resort to sacrificing itself with Self-Destruct to take out Curse Porygon, as otherwise it won't do enough back to Porygon and will slowly get whittled down by Double-Edge and full paralysis, and even paralysis turns. Even RestTalk Sudowoodo has to try and PP stall Porygon, which can even just result in Sudowoodo getting PP stalled itself. Graveler and Pupitar are even immune to paralysis from Thunder Wave, but Graveler cannot break past Porygon without well-timed critical hits or taking itself out with Porygon by using Explosion on it due to being slower. Pupitar, meanwhile, is not 2HKOed by Ice Beam from full health, can easily break past Curse Porygon with Screech, and is faster; however, it cannot serve as an effective switch-in to Porygon with Ice Beam, (AC) unless it is comfortable trading most of its health to take a large chunk out of Porygon. (if appropriate, maybe somehow specify that porygon can just recover later so this is often not ideal. maybe i misunderstand the dynamic, tho)

========

Other Options
=============

===================

**Wigglytuff**: Wigglytuff walls the BoltBeam set, not being weak to Thunder or Ice Beam, and Porygon's lack of STAB on either move means it will not be hitting hard enough to significantly damage Wigglytuff, even with Spikes on the field.
