VGC 18 Hydreigon

[OVERVIEW]

* Hydreigon functions as a strong special attacker thanks to its great offensive typing, base 125 Special Attack, and great coverage options.
* Although it is great offensively, Hydreigon suffers from a 4x weakness to Fairy and a 2x weakness to Fighting, forcing you to play very carefully around the Tapu Pokemon.
* Hydreigon sits at an awkward Speed tier of 98. Though not remarkably fast, it is certainly not slow either. However, it is crucially outsped by the likes of Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Metagross, and Kartana.

[SET]
name: Special Attacker
move 1: Dark Pulse
move 2: Draco Meteor / Tailwind
move 3: Flamethrower / Earth Power
move 4: Protect
item: Darkinium Z / Life Orb
ability: Levitate
nature: Timid / Modest
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* The EVs help take advantage of Hydreigon's Special Attack while also patching up its average Speed.
* Darkinium Z gives Hydreigon a very powerful one-time nuke, OHKOing Cresselia and Aegislash while dealing massive damage to most of the metagame that doesn't resist it.
* Life Orb gives Hydreigon a consistent damage boost to all attacks.
* Dark Pulse is Hydreigon's move of choice, as it deals heavy damage to common Pokemon such as Aegislash and Cresselia.
* Draco Meteor functions as a powerful attack that can deal very heavy damage at the cost of reducing Hydreigon's Special Attack by two stages.
* Tailwind provides a means of speed control for your team.
* Flamethrower hits Ferrothorn, Celesteela, and Amoonguss super effectively, but you can opt for its riskier alternative Fire Blast for more firepower at the cost of accuracy.
* Earth Power gives Hydreigon the opportunity to hit Incineroar, Tapu Koko, and Mega Mawile super effectively.
* The Timid nature can be swapped out for Modest for more damage overall at the cost of making Hydreigon slower than Timid Tapu Lele and Jolly Landorus-T .
* Hydreigon fits very well on Tapu Lele and Mega Metagross teams because it can stop key threats that both Tapu Lele and Mega Metagross dislike, such as Aegislash and Cresselia.
* Landorus-T provides Intimidate support and is able to freely use Earthquake thanks to Hydreigon's Levitate.
* Amoonguss is also a reliable partner thanks to its ability to redirect attacks and also check Fairy-types in one slot.

[SET]
name: Choice Attacker
move 1: Draco Meteor
move 2: Dark Pulse
move 3: Flamethrower / Fire Blast
move 4: Earth Power
item: Choice Specs / Choice Scarf
ability: Levitate
nature: Timid / Modest
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Choice Specs allows Hydreigon to deal massive amounts of damage, while Choice Scarf lets it stay in a comfortable Speed tier, outspeeding multiple Pokemon including maximum Speed Pheromosa.
* A Timid nature is preferred with Choice Specs, as it bumps up Hydreigon's Speed without sacrificing damage. Choice Scarf Hydreigon uses a Modest nature because it already achieves a high Speed stat of 225, appreciating the boost in damage more.
* The EV spread lets Hydreigon hit hard and hit fast, two things that it wants to take advantage of.
* Choice Specs guarantees the OHKO on uninvested Mega Metagross with Dark Pulse and the OHKO on uninvested Landorus-T with Draco Meteor.
* The current moveset allows Hydreigon to fully take advantage of its offensive presence without sacrificing damage or coverage in return.
* Flash Cannon is a possible option to hit Fairy-types but is often outclassed by Hydreigon's other moves because it usually doesn't deal enough damage to become relevant.

[OVERVIEW]

* Hydreigon functions as a strong special attacker thanks to its great offensive typing, 120125 Special Attack, and great coverage options.

* Although it is great offensively, Hydreigon suffers from a 4x weakness to fairy type attacks and a 2x weakness to fighting , forcing you to play very carefully around the Tapus.

* Hydreigon sits at an awkward speed tier of 98, where it is crucially outsped by the likes of Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Charizard Y and Zapdos.
Hydreigon matches up decently well with Mega Charizard Y and Zapdos, the later also rarely invest fully into speed. From playing Hydreigon a lot I've found the biggest short comings related to speed have simply been being slower than both Mega Metagross and Kartana. Both of which threaten an ohko or huge damage, while Hydreigon in return could ohko either.
I know neither of those are just faster than 98 but both are far more relevant to Hydreigon, so I'd prefer they were mentioned instead of Charizard and Zapdos.

evs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 SpD Swap the order of Spe and SpD so it matches the usual reading order (HP/Atk/Def/SpA/SpD/Spe)
ivs: 0 Atk I don't think we need to mention 0 Atk IVs. Iirc the policy is that it's considered implied and goes without saying.

[SET COMMENTS]

*HisThe EVs help take advantage of hisHydreigon's special attack while also patching up hisits average speed.

* Darkinium Z gives Hydreigon a very powerful one time nuke, ohkoing Cresselia and Aegislash-Shield Don't need to specify shield while dealing massive damage to most of the metagame that doesn't resist it.

* Life Orb gives Hydreigon consistent damage while giving it the option to protect itself. Choice items haven't been mentioned at all so 'option to protect itself' looks to be comparing with Darkinium Z. Just mention that it gives a consitent damage boost to all attacks

* Dark Pulse is hydreigon's move of choice as it deals heavy damage to common Pokemon such as Aegislash and Cresselia.

* Draco Meteor functions as a powerful attack which can deal very heavy damage at the cost of reducing your special attack by two stages.

* Tailwind helps Hydreigon's speed while also providinges a means of speed control tofor your team.

* Flamethrower hits Ferrothorn, Kartana and Amoonguss super effectively, but can opted out for it's riskier alternative Fire Blast for more firepower forat the cost of accuracy. Swap Kartana for Celesteela. Kartana is ohkoed by LO (or z-) Dark Pulse as it is.

* Earth power gives it the opportunity to hit heatran and Tapu Koko super effectively. Add Mega Mawile, which is often supported by rain, to this list. Also, Heatran carries Shuca Berry so often that I think Incineroar might be a more appropriate mention.

* Timid nature can be swapped out for modest at the cost of being slower than timid Tapu Lele and Jolly Landorus-T while giving it more damage overall.

* Hydreigon fits very will in Tapu Lele and Mega Metagross teams because they form a Fantasy core with great offensive presence. They do work quite nicely together, but not because of a 'fantasy core'. Hydreigon just has a decent mathcup against a number of pokemon that both Lele and Metagross dislike. Which is more to do, offensively, with the Dark STAB and defensively the Dark / Dragon combination provides key resists to Fire, Ghost and Dark as well as the Ground immunity from levitate.
So instead of mentioning the fantasy core instead say that Hydreigon is adapt at handling pokemon Metagross and Lele can struggle with, such as Aegislash and Cresselia.

* Landorus-Ttherian provides intimidate support and is able to spamfreely use Earthquake thanks to Hydreigon's levitate.

* Amoonguss is also a reliable partner thanks to its ability to redirect attacks and also check fairy types in one slot. Hyphenate 'fairy types'

* Hydreigon sits at an awkward speed tier of 98, where it is outsped by Mega Metagross and Kartana, where both threaten an OHKO on Hydreigon when Hydreigon could do the same, only to get outsped
I meant for Kangaskhan to remain there, though it has fallen of a little. Just change it to this:
* Hydreigon sits at an awkward speed tier of 98. Though not remarkably fast, it is certainly not slow either. However, it is crucially outsped by the likes of Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Metagross, and Kartana.
Also the EV spread of the first set currently has speed as 4, so quickly fix that to 252 and then it'll be QC2/2

Changes implemented, should I post to GP thread?
