Mightyena (NU Analysis)

Disaster Area

formerly Piexplode
http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/mightyena-nu-analysis.3508248/ exists but it's pretty ancient and low quality, so here goes.

[Overview]
- Base stats are pretty poorly spread, its bulk is underwhelming even in this tier [70/70/60], whilst its STAB type is backed by a poor 60 SpA, with 90 Atk but very little movepool to use it with. Base 70 Spe is somewhat solid though.
- Dark typing is somewhat of a blessing, meaning it instantly shines as a Haunter/Chimecho check
- Some useful moves, such as Roar, Taunt, Heal Bell.

[SET]
name: utility
move 1: Roar
move 2: Shadow Ball / Crunch
move 3: Heal Bell / Protect
move 4: Taunt / Protect
item: Leftovers
evs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
nature: Careful / Calm

[SET COMMENTS]
- Roar combined with Spikes allows it to wear down the opposing team passively, as well as Phaze out a boosted CM Chimecho.
- Shadow Ball or Crunch is your option versus Chimecho and Haunter; Crunch is STAB but comes off of a weaker attacking stat; Haunter occasionally uses Will-o-Wisp, and Chimecho Reflect, however Chimecho boosts its Special Defense with Calm Mind, so either is about equally viable.
- Heal Bell, Taunt, and Protect make up the remaining slots. Taunt lets it avoid being set-up bait for a lot of Pokemon, including preventing Spikes from going up, and in particular is handy versus Stallish teams. Heal Bell allows it to support the team, removing unwanted status, and Protect can be used to obtain extra Leftovers recovery, since Mightyena is still fairly frail in spite of Intimidate and investment, due to its lack of recovery options and lack of Spikes immunity.
- RestTalk is an option, but challenging to fit. With it though you could run a faster or more offensive spread, since the bulk that all-out defensive investment merits isn't so nessecary.
- Psych Up + Crunch allows you to effectively counter CM Chime even as last Pokemon.

[Other Options]
- Choice Band, but Murkrow does it better.
- Howl, but no STAB makes it a fairly inferior choice.
- Body Slam and Yawn can spread status, but are weak choices.
- Counter
- Thief
- Sunny Day/Rain Dance to support certain sweepers.

[Checks and Counters]
- Fighting types such as Hitmonchan can scare it out easily, but beware Protect allowing it to scout CB Hitmonchan's movechoice.
- Not a particularly scary Pokemon to face, but Taunt helps shut it down, and phazing it with Spikes can help beat it too.
- Powerful attackers other than Haunter/Chimecho can usually break through without fuss.
