Project Pokémon Matchmaking (SM Edition) - Current round: Hawlucha (SUBMITTING TAPUS IS BANNED)

Celesteela @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 88 HP / 252 SpA / 168 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Modest Nature (+SpA, -Atk)
- Autotomize
- Air Slash
- Giga Drain
- Fire Blast

Autotomize Celesteela is a great offensive partner for Banded Zygarde. Zygarde can break Celesteela's common checks in Heatran, Magearna and Zapdos and aid an Autotomize sweep. On the other hand, Celesteela can overwhelm Zygarde's common checks in defensive Landorus, Mega Scizor, Ferrothorn and Tangrowth.

252+ SpA Celesteela Supersonic Skystrike (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Tangrowth: 318-374 (78.7 - 92.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Celesteela Supersonic Skystrike (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 24 SpD Landorus-Therian: 256-303 (67 - 79.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Celesteela Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 128 SpD Scizor-Mega: 408-480 (118.9 - 139.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Celesteela Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 352-416 (100 - 118.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

In terms of type synergy, Zygarde is a decent fire resist for Celesteela to fall back on whilst Celesteela can be a much needed pivot into psychics and fairies like Lele if Zygarde requires.

The set aims to maximise power, outspeed Ash Greninja after set-up and the rest in bulk.

Charizard @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Solar Beam
- Hidden Power Ice
- Roost

Standard (mostly) Mega Zard Y. This set is capable of switching into and taking on some of the best switch-ins to Choice Band-boosted Thousand Arrows in the metagame, notably bulky Mega Scizor, Tangrowth, and Tapu Bulu. Hidden Power Ice allows Mega Charizard Y to lure in and beat Landorus-T, which can otherwise wall even CB Zygarde to an extent. After these Pokemon are eliminated, Zygarde is just able to spam Thousand Arrows and basically pick up a kill every time it comes in. In return, Mega Charizard Y appreciates Zygarde's ability to take care of Tyranitar, Heatran, and Toxapex, as non-Focus Blast sets greatly struggle against those Pokemon.

Reserving Victini

Victini @ Expert Belt
Ability: Victory Star
EVs: 96 Atk / 160 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- V-create
- Bolt Strike
- Glaciate
- Energy Ball/Grass Knot

Mixed Tini works surprisingly well with CB Zygarde becuz the main switchins to CB Zygarde r Tangrowth, Tapu Bulu, Lando-T, Buzzwole, and Mega Hera. They prevent Zygarde from spamming Thousand Arrows. Outside of mons dat outspeed zygarde and can kill it, Victini can take care majority of the main switchins to Band Zygarde. V-create touches majority of the fat grass types dat Zygarde can't deal with and glaciate iirc 2HKO's lando-t. Bolt Strike helps chip damage off Fini.c Grass Knot is mainly for T-tar, but Eball is for stuff like Gastro, Rotom-W which eats GK. Victini can also switchin to Lele (outside of sball) becuz of typing. Victini likes the help from Zygod against mons like T-tar, Heatran, Toxapex, Zard, Maro-A.

Honestly, I could've narrowed it down a little more if I wanted; I didn't want to though, so have 4 winners!

Riddikulusness kinda knitpicky, but I'm not quite sure how Zapdos helps with Hippowdon considering that it just gets Toxic'd and only deals 32-38%-ish with HP Ice.
DeltaRott I think it would've been better to list HP Ice Mega Scizor here for its ability to dent Landorus-T for Zygarde.

Round 17: Baton Pass Scolipede

Scolipede @ Black Sludge
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe OR 248 HP / 232 Def / 28 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Substitute
- Protect
- Baton Pass
- Filler

Go nuts! Slower spread outruns MegaZam at +1 and gives its Substitutes a very small chance to take MSab's KOff.

Espeon
I wont forget about it this time hehe

Espeon @ Kee Berry
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 12 SpD / 32 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Morning Sun
- Calm Mind
- Stored Power
- Dazzling Gleam

Espeon has been a staple for successful BP squads since SpeedPass was popularized back in ORAS thanks to its Magic Bounce ability, which bounces back phazing moves like Whirlwind or Roar and also stuff that would cripple other recipients like Toxic and Taunt. It's also a great Stallbreaker for BP since it pretty much beats Stall on its own so you don't have to worry about it when choosing the rest of the recipients (although most of them are annoying for it to face). This is the standard set ran on bp with CM for the boosts while powering up Stored Power and just blowing resists after some boosts. Morning Sun gives it recovery and Dazzling Gleam hits most Dark types for a lot of damage after some boosts. Its defense is pretty bad so Kee Berry is nice for a small boost there and the spread maximizes physical bulk while hitting a key Speed tier with the Speed.

Necrozma @ Leftovers
Ability: Prism Armor
EVs: 252 HP / 152 SpD / 104 Spe
Calm Nature
- Calm Mind
- Iron Defense
- Morning Sun
- Stored Power

Baton pass is a funny format where the relationship of a Pokémon being a “partner” with Scolipede just doesn’t seem to fit. With the playstyle relying on 1 mon (in this case Scolipede) to pass to 4/5 abusers, depending on if you need something like lead Excadrill to get rocks vs stall if your abusers have trouble beating common stall cores without the additional chip, makes one think this week is more inclined to “who is your favorite abuser of speed pass” since Scolipede actually fits more as a utility mon this team is centered around while your main core actually consists of abusers who help each other out. With this in mind I selected Necrozma as I feel it is one of the most prominent finishers in the Baton Pass Archetype. Basically if you’re using a team where let’s say you have Scolipede, lead Excadrill, Necrozma, and 3 other abusers all the team really needs to do is eliminate dark types, and try to lure breakers so necrozma can set up easily. If this is done Necrozma can take the speed boost from Scolipede and fairly easily begin to set up its defenses with Calm Mind and Iron Defense – healing itself along the way with Morning Sun, then sweep with Stored Power. The specific set listed has enough speed at +1 to outpace a positive nature base 100 speed mon like Charizard-Y or Volcarona with the rest of the EVs going into bulk to make setting up much easier to accomplish as Necrozma is now 3hko’d by scarf Gengar’s Shadow Ball as a reference to its original bulk before boosting. Basically it comes down to if you can eliminate your opponent’s dark types, remove threatening breakers who hit extremely hard right away/for SE damage, and watch out for Taunt - which with Baton Pass you have 3 other offensive juggernauts on the team who can aim to accomplish said tasks. If you accomplish these three goals you have a great chance at winning by passing speed to Necrozma, making it a very solid “partner” if that’s what you’d like to call it.

Buzzwole.

Buzzwole @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 40 HP / 184 Atk / 252 SpD / 32 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch
- Thunder Punch
- Bulk Up

Buzzwole has to be the 2nd best Scolipede partner after Espeon. Buzzwole simply lacks speed and Scolipede brings it that, combined with its high defensive stats (107/139/53) it can setup on many teams.

With SpD investment and a Bulk up or two it's very difficult to stop. It almost perfect coverage with this set; people also still just don't expect it to carry these moves. It sets up on things like Landorus, and if you have a Substitute up then status users like Sableye too.

Taking the cable guy Xurkitree.

Xurkitree @ Air Balloon
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Tail Glow
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Ice
- Energy Ball

Relatively low speed and high damage output are good qualities for any BP team candidate, and Xurkitree is no exception to the rule. With some speed boosts (and possibly a substitute), Xurkitree can then boosts its SpAtk to even higher levels with Tail glow (and/or Beast Boost) and sweep the remaining mons of the opposing team (preferably late-game, as some mons like Ferrothorn or Unaware Clefable can trouble it, even at +6). Air Balloon is used here to let Xurkitree set up against most Ground-type mons.

Mimikyu

Mimikyu @ Life Orb
Ability: Disguise
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly/Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Shadow Claw
- Play Rough
- Wood Hammer

Here we have this Ghost, which has a good ability that allows it to eat the first hit for free, thus allowing a free turn to set up a Swords Dance.

Passing a Substitute with a Spe boost with a fast Baton Pass allows us to forget the priority move and just proceed to threaten the opponent.

Mimikyu has a nice defensive synergy with Scolipede, so you don't be afraid of Flying, Fire and Psychic moves as in the case of Mega Heracross, Buzzwole and so on.

Smeargle

Smeargle @ Focus Sash
Ability: Own Tempo
EVs: 88 HP / 168 Def / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Ingrain
- Quiver Dance
- Spore
- Baton Pass

The EVs spread is made for hitting a Leftovers number (through the use of Ingrain for self healing).

Ingrain helps our team members to deal with Roar and the other phasing moveswhile keeping them at high health.
Spore helps us to gain momentum, even though the introduction of Electric and Misty Terrain is a huge nerf to this move.
Baton Pass is self explanatory in BP teams, and Quiver Dance is one of the best boosting moves available hitting 3 stats at once.
You do realise that Baton Pass Clause exists right?

Magearna @ Fairium Z
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fleur Cannon
- Calm Mind
- Filler
- Filler

(Really, you can pick whatever coverage you need to choose what Magearna does/doesn't lose to and what other sweepers on your team can beat. Fillers can include the likes of HP Fire, Thunderbolt, HP Ground, Ice Beam, Focus Blast, Flash Cannon etc. Hell you don't even have to run Fleur Cannon and can pick other Z moves or like SE Berries to set up on checks.)

Basically any sweeper that can abuse the Speed that Scolipede passes is great on teams with it. Magearna is one of the better ones for a few reasons. Firstly, by passing Speed to Magearna, it doesn't need to run Shift Gear and instead can run Calm Mind to quickly boost it's Special Attack. Furthermore, Magearna's bulk and defensive typing means she's a great since recipient you can more easily pass into her without needing a Sub unlike frailer attackers like Xurkitree. Scolipass teams tend to use a lot of Psychic-type sweepers like Espeon because Stored Power is nuts with SpeedPass, and Magearna can provide a nice check to Dark-types that can threaten them, using them as set-up fodder. Mag's coverage is also nuts, and her customizability allows her to suit a team's needs depending on what the other sweepers cannot cover. Soul-Heart is also a great ability for a sweeper to have, especially when that sweeper has Magearna's coverage since your opponent can suddenly have the game snowballed out of their favor if Mag is running coverage that they didn't expect.

Manaphy @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 132 HP / 252 SpA / 124 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tail Glow
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Psychic

always one of the better recipients for speed pass due to decent natural bulk and a great boosting move in tail glow

Mamoswine @ Life Orb
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 SpD
Jolly / Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Icicle Crash / Icicle Spear
- Knock Off / Superpower
- Ice Shard

Mamoswine's STABs are as anti-meta as ever, but it's hindered by its middling Speed and Tapu Lele makes its Ice Shard less potent than it was in previous generations. Therefore, Scolipede.

Heracross-Mega @ Heracronite
Ability: Guts
EVs: 64 HP / 252 Atk / 192 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Pin Missile
- Rock Blast

Possibly the best mega recipient of BP boosts, especially if a sub can be passed. If Heracross can get an SD up then its pretty much game over at that point. Tears stall a new one and forces you to sack at least one mon but probably more

Dugtrio @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Arena Trap
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Aerial Ace
- Earthquake
- Pursuit / Stealth Rock
- Memento / Stealth Rock

Most people use Mega Heracross as their answer to Baton Pass. However, they should know by now that Baton Pass team can adapt and now it gives birth to this lovely set. Supersonic Strike allows you to remove the Heracross and continue on your merry way. Taking advantage of Arena Trap can also help you remove some Taunt users for you although unfortunately Tapu Koko will just U-turn out. Pursuit is added to remove Alolan Marowak. Memento allows you to still be useful once you have removed something and could be clutch in helping your team to set up. You can try Stealth Rock to help your BP team bypass Sturdy so that Skarmory doesn't Whirlwind your boosted sweeper out.

Mawile @ Mawilite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Play Rough
- Sucker Punch
- Thunder Punch
- Fire Fang

One of the main problems with Mega Mawile is its low Speed stat, which leaves it highly reliant on Sucker Punch vs offense. When combined with Scolipede, Mawile can be passed Speed boosts, allowing it to put in a lot of work against offensive and defensive teams alike. Set is fairly standard; left Sucker Punch in there in case for priority users or if you cant be passed Speed boosts for some reason.

Reserving Latias

Latias @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 12 SpD / 32 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Roost
- Reflect Type/Thunderbolt
- Calm Mind
- Stored Power

The ben gay bp set which abuses reflect type to allow it to set up vs ferro, heatran, scizor, etc. Thunderbolt is optional if you don't want to get cockblocked by greninja/dark types.

Big Latias gif cuz school is dumb and doesn't allow the smaller gifs

Round 18: Fast Quiver Dance Volcarona

Volcarona @ Charti Berry / Firium Z / Psychium Z
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Fire Blast
- Giga Drain / Psychic / Bug Buzz
- Hidden Power Ground / Hidden Power Ice / Psychic / Bug Buzz

Reason for slashing so many options is because I want to leave which variant is accounted for open. Make sure to state which variant(s) your partner is good for in your post!

Reserving Dugtrio.

Dugtrio @ Focus Sash
Ability: Arena Trap
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Reversal
- Screech
- Memento

Dugtrio is a fantastic Volcarona partner, since it can trap and eliminate several troublesome Pokémon for Volcarona, including Tyranitar, Heatran, Toxapex and Chansey. It can also help out Volcarona by using Memento on the opposing Pokémon to let it set up a Quiver Dance (or two) more easily. It is best paired with Firium Z or Charti Berry variants, since Volcarona can forgo Psychium Z since Toxapex is trapped and KO'd by Dugtrio.

Reserving keldeo

Keldeo @ Choice Specs
Ability: Justified
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Scald
- Secret Sword
- Hidden Power Electric

Volcarona's very few answers tend not to be Keldeo fans. With the revenge killers being generally Scarf Ground/Rock type mons with Rock Slide/Stone Edge, Keldeo happily switches into those moves to allow Volcarona safe set up later on. Likewise on the defensive side of things, there aren't many answers to Volc, but Chansey/Mantine are probably the safest; Chansey is obciously beaten by Secret Sword, while tech HP Electric is a great lure for Mantine, also preventing it from defogging rocks and possibly not coming back in that game. And y'know, good luck Heatran

On the other side of the spectrum, Psychium Z Volcarona is a pretty great partner to Keldeo being able to KO Toxapex at +1, whilst doing 3/4 of Tapu Fini's health; preventing probably the best two answers to Keldeo from doing their jobs.

Weavile @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Icicle Crash
- Ice Shard
- Pursuit / Low Kick

For sets without HP Ice and/or Bug Buzz. Volcarona struggles against Latios without either move and flat-out loses to Dragonite without the former; Weavile beats both. Pursuit is preferred in the last slot to trap Latios, but Low Kick can lure in and dispose of Rock-types such as Tyranitar, freeing up Volc's item slot for a Z-Crystal.

Tapu Fini

Tapu Fini @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Taunt
- Nature's Madness
- Moonblast
- Defog

Tapu Fini is a particularly effective partner to provide Defog + Misty Terrain, letting Volcarona set up without fear of being paralyzed or poisoned.
Defensively speaking, they don't stack the same weaknesses and Nature's Madness helps a lot Volcarona to overcome its checks at 50% HP.

Greninja @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Spikes / Hidden Power [Fire]
- Hydro Pump
- Gunk Shot
- Ice Beam

Greninja offensively pressures the tier's common hazard setters such as Landorus-T, Garchomp, Heatran, Ferrothorn, etc. and even threatens fire resists such as Heatran, Zygarde, Garchomp and Latios, making it a good offensive partner for Volcarona. Setting spikes can even make Charti Volc's easier as it lacks the raw power from a Z move.

Most obvious ones are taken and I don't wanna use Starmie so..

Tyranitar @ Choice Band
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stone Edge
- Crunch
- Pursuit
- Earthquake

Tyranitar is a very nice partner for Volcarona because it can click Pursuit to weaken Chansey, Heatran, Nihilego and Lati@s; allowing an easier time for Volcarona to sweep. A Stone Edge also leaves Offensive Zygarde to be in KO range of +1 Inferno Overdrive, which is very nice for the team. Thirdly, Tyranitar invites in Pokemon like Skarmory, Magerna and Landorus-T, all of whom fears Volcarona.
