UU Quagsire

[OVERVIEW]

Quagsire's ability Unaware coupled with its decent physical bulk, reliable recovery, and fantastic defensive typing allows it to check boosting threats such as Mega Aerodactyl, Cobalion, and Scizor. Because of Unaware, Quagsire fills a crucial role and fits comfortably on stall teams as a complete stop to most physical boosters. Its typing gives Quagsire key resistances to Fire, Electric, and Rock, allowing it to completely stop certain Electric-types such as Mega Manectric if they lack Grass-type coverage. However, Quagsire's low offensive stats makes it a pretty passive Pokemon, leaving it easily taken advantage of by common metagame threats such as Hydreigon, Facade Mega Altaria, and Celebi. Quagsire's bulk only goes so far, too, as it is unable to consistently wall extremely powerful attackers such as Life Orb Terrakion and Crawdaunt, and its mediocre Special Defense is easily taken advantage of by special attackers such as Latias and Togekiss. Its Grass weakness can also leave it vulnerable to coverage moves from Pokemon Quagsire would otherwise check, such as Infernape and Nihilego.

move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Recover
move 4: Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Unaware
nature: Relaxed
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Scald is mainly used to burn physical attackers such as Cobalion, Mega Aerodactyl, and Scizor. Earthquake is a secondary STAB attack that does somewhat decent damage, 2HKOing Tentacruel, Infernape, and Empoleon. Recover is used so that Quagsire can sustain its HP against the Pokemon it is meant to counter while also ensuring that Quagsire can Toxic stall foes. Toxic cripples Pokemon such as Latias and Primarina and allows Quagsire to stall out most physical attackers. Curse is an option to make Quagsire a physically bulky sweeper while also allowing it to wall physical attackers better, but you must evaluate whether dropping the utility of Toxic is worth it.

Set Details
========

Maximum HP and Defense EVs make Quagsire as physically bulky as possible. Unaware is what gives Quagsire its niche, ignoring boosts and allowing it to counter certain physical attackers, such as Cobalion and Mega Aerodactyl. Leftovers is used for passive recovery, allowing Quagsire to avoid the 2HKO from moves such as Life Orb Scizor's Bug Bite after Stealth Rock, and it also reduces the number of times Quagsire has to use Recover. A Relaxed nature is used because Quagsire cares much more about its damage output than its paltry Speed stat.

Usage Tips
========

Switch Quagsire directly into the Pokemon that it walls, such as Mega Absol and Cobalion, and start throwing out Scalds. Always keep Quagsire healthy with Recover so that it can avoid the 2HKO from the Pokemon it walls, such as Terrakion and Mega Absol. Don't let Quagsire take unnecessary special hits, such as Mega Pidgeot's Hurricane and Latias's Draco Meteor. Quagsire is usually paired with Blissey anyway, which checks these Pokemon. Avoid letting Quagsire get hit with a Toxic, as getting statused severely hinders its ability to wall physical attackers. Avoid getting burned as well, since Quagsire also finds it hard to wall boosting attackers when its Leftovers recovery is being negated, and getting burned only adds to Quagsire's passivity by halving its Attack.

Team Options
========

Blissey is a fantastic partner, as it can use Heal Bell to cure any status ailments such as Toxic poison. Blissey appreciates Quagsire's ability to take on physical boosters as well, while Quagsire appreciates Blissey's ability to wall special attackers. Other special walls such as Mega Altaria, Tentacruel, and Alolan Muk can cover for Quagsire's bad Special Defense stat. Defensive checks to Grass-types such as Latias, Amoonguss, and Togekiss make for good teammates, as they are able to come in on threats to Quagsire like Celebi and Mega Sceptile, although Amoonguss must be wary of Psychic-type STAB moves on Celebi. All of these Pokemon are also pretty specially bulky and can help patch up Quagsire's mediocre Special Defense. Defog and Rapid Spin users are almost mandatory on a team with Quagsire because it is unable to wall physical attackers such as Terrakion, Mega Aerodactyl, and Cobalion with several layers of Spikes and Stealth Rock up or, even worse, with Toxic Spikes on the field, which completely cripple Quagsire. Some good users of Defog and Rapid Spin are Tentacruel, Latias, Mandibuzz, and Togekiss.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Waterfall might seem tempting if you're using Curse, but it lacks the overall utility of Scald's chance to burn, which is crucial because Quagsire would lose Toxic if running Curse. Encore is an option to lock a Pokemon into an undesirable move, such as Stealth Rock, but Quagsire's low Speed makes it hard to use, and it's not worth using over Toxic most of the time.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass-types**: Grass-types such as Celebi, Amoonguss, and Mega Sceptile easily OHKO Quagsire with 4x super effective Grass-type STAB moves. Celebi can take advantage of Quagsire to set up Nasty Plots and heal any Toxic damage with Natural Cure. Other Pokemon that use Grass-type coverage moves like Infernape and Nihilego are capable of luring in and OHKOing Quagsire.

**Special Attackers**: Special attackers such as Mega Pidgeot, Primarina, and Mega Blastoise are capable of taking advantage of Quagsire's lower Special Defense stat. Primarina can OHKO Quagsire with Hydro Pump, while Mega Blastoise and Mega Pidgeot easily 2HKO with Hydro Pump and Hurricane, respectively.

**Status**: Status ailments such as Toxic poison and burn hinder Quagsire's ability as a physical wall, as they not only force Quagsire to use Recover much more often but also make it unable to handle physical attackers. Toxic in particular totally cripples Quagsire by slowly wearing it down over time, while getting burned lowers the damage output of Earthquake, preventing Quagsire from 2HKOing Terrakion and Infernape and making Quagsire even more passive than it already is.

Overview

* There are a few too many examples of boosting threats in your first line. Remove Mega Absol and SD Infernape as examples, since the former is better with all-out attacking sets and the latter's SD set isn't all too common.
* Replace your Conkeldurr example with something like Heracross.
* Since Xurkitree is no longer in the tier, talk in your last line about how its Grass weakness can leave it vulnerable to Pokemon like Amoonguss and Celebi and to things that commonly use Grass-type moves as coverage, like Infernape and Nihilego.

Set/Moves

* Give examples of physical attackers that Scald can burn.
* Replace the Terrakion and Mega Absol examples in the Earthquake line with Tentacruel and Empoleon, since Quagsire is more likely to try burning Terrak and Absol.
* 'wall what it walls' doesn't sound very good, so just say 'so that Quagsire can sustain itself' in your Recover line.

Set Details

* 'allowing it to counter certain physical attackers.' - give examples here
* Just for some more substance in the Leftovers line, consider expanding on it by giving examples of 2HKOs Quagsire can avoid with them.

Usage Tips

* I'd mention that avoiding burns is fairly important since Quagsire's Leftovers will be negated by them.

Team Options

* This section needs to be fleshed out way more, it's way too bare boned.
* Give examples of things that can come in on Grass-type attacks for Quagsire.
* Give some more examples of specially bulky Pokemon that can be good teammates for Quagsire.
* Give some examples of entry hazard removers that'd commonly be paired with Quagsire and say that they can remove hazards for it and allow it to switch in more comfortably.

Other Options

* I'd also say in your Curse line that Toxic is just a more consistently useful move.
* You don't seem to have finished the sentence in your Encore line, so please do that.

Checks and Counters

* Remove the 'Coverage Moves' section and just add some Pokemon that commonly use Grass-type coverage into the Grass-types section.
* Mention Burn in the status section and say that it negates Leftovers recovery.

Overall good work, make sure to flesh this out a little more come the writeup. QC 1/3, sorry it took so long!

Heya, AM check:
-In Usage Tips, mention to be wary of stray HP Grasses, as they're becoming more popular nowadays with the rise of electric-immune waters.

"Leftovers is used for passive recovery, allowing it to avoid the 2HKO from moves such as Life Orb Scizor's Bug Bite after Stealth Rock, and it also eases the amount of times Quagsire has to use Recover."

Could you give some more examples, or a different one? Life Orb isn't even the main slash on Offensive SD Scizor's set anymore so I think there could be some better examples.

"Don't let Quagsire get hit with a Toxic, as it severely hinders its ability to wall physical attackers. Avoid getting burned as well, since Quagsire also finds it hard to wall boosting attackers when its Leftovers is being negated."

I'd also mention that it weakens EQ to the point where it can't 2HKO Terrakion and it misses the OHKO on nape. Well, there are other calcs ig but like in general mention that it nullifies the threat of a decently strong EQ and as a result makes it even more passive than it already is.

-I don't know what QC thinks but personally I feel as though Haze isn't worth the mention in OO. You made it pretty clear that it's not really doing much
against haxorus and since it's significantly less effective without those main 4 moves, it's really not worth it. Wait for QC's word on that though.

More accurately, just mention to be careful of moves that can lure Quagsire. i.e. the ones you mentioned in the Grass-types section in Checks and Counters.

"Leftovers is used for passive recovery, allowing it to avoid the 2HKO from moves such as Life Orb Scizor's Bug Bite after Stealth Rock, and it also eases the amount of times Quagsire has to use Recover."

It's not the first slash, but it's definitely still a very viable and used item for that set, so I'd say it's still relevant enough to illustrate.

"Don't let Quagsire get hit with a Toxic, as it severely hinders its ability to wall physical attackers. Avoid getting burned as well, since Quagsire also finds it hard to wall boosting attackers when its Leftovers is being negated."

I agree with this, so to make things more clear, I'd first say to avoid Quagsire from getting statused as a whole. Mention how Toxic is a pain because it can't wall physical attackers as well, how burn and regular poison from like Toxic Spikes negate Leftovers, and then how burn affects its damage output for Earthquake.

-I don't know what QC thinks but personally I feel as though Haze isn't worth the mention in OO. You made it pretty clear that it's not really doing much against haxorus and since it's significantly less effective without those main 4 moves, it's really not worth it. Agreed. Strapped for moveslots yet not really effective in practice. No point.
Decent am QC check. You're pretty good at picking out some effective points, so props for that. When suggesting changes, though, try to think a little more about the entire analysis and not just that specific part you noticed. Anyway, my comments were added to the above quote with some extra stuff below.

Overview:
  • Your first point talks about its good physical bulk, but later on, you mention how its Defense is only decent. Reword the first one a little so it's consistent, especially since Terrakion is an example in both
Moves:
  • I honestly think Curse deserves a mention here over just being in OO. Maybe not a slash, but it's really not a bad move at all for it. Considering Quagsire is going to be on stall teams most of the time, a lot of the issues with Curse are offset. Blissey and/or other special walls are going to be partners to Quagsire, so being weak to special attacks isn't a huge deal. Yes, Toxic is more generally useful and consistent, but that's why it's the only one slashed. That said, depending on the role compression of the defensive teams, Toxic may not be necessary on Quagsire, so making it a stall setup sweeper isn't a horrible idea. Also, mention that Curse allows Quagsire to take on certain strong physical attackers better. Do note what Quagsire is unable to stop or stall out without Toxic, though.
Team Options:
  • Regarding the second point, Amoonguss doesn't really fall into the category of "very specially bulky". Just rephrase it to say how they are generally also able to take on special attacks for Quagsire to cover its weaker Special Defense.
  • For the last point, Starmie isn't really a good example, so just replace it with something like Tentacruel again. Not sure why Stealth Rock is excluded from the list of entry hazards, though, since granted Quagsire resists it, it's still going to play a part in getting it worn down. Basically, just rephrase to say how Defog and Rapid Spin users are appreciated by Quagsire because (like hilomilo said) it'd be able to switch in more comfortably. You can then talk about how those entry hazards would make it harder to wall Terrakion and Aerodactyl.
Other Options:
  • Remove Curse when you write this in Moves.
  • Talk about how Waterfall may seem tempting if Quagsire is running Curse, but lacking a means of statusing opposing Pokemon that can easily come in, be it via Scald or Toxic, is pretty bad. Scald just has the utility when you're not running Toxic.
QC 2/3 afterwards and you can write it up.

overview

when talking about common things that take advantage of quagsire, specify that it's facade malt that takes advantage of it and replace the resttalk cune example with celebi because crocune isn't entirely common rn and it also takes a huge amount of time pp stalling the quag which i wouldn't really call "taking advantage of"

Moves

The last line is kinda unnecessary tbh, you already made the reasoning for toxic perfectly clear earlier on and you're just restating things at that point. This could probably be left to GP but it's quality related enough that i'm mentioning it here.

Team Options

Amoonguss doesn't come in on celebi, either find a better example or reword it to make sure that people don't try to hard amoon into celebi expecting it to work out gingerly.

I'd probably add mandibuzz in hazard removal options.
