RMT Information & Resources

Welcome to the RMT forum! The purpose of this thread is to give everyone a central hub to easily find the rules and guidelines that should be read before posting. It will cover rules on how to rate, how to post teams, and links to threads that provide more in-depth information. Links to image resources and sample RMT formats can also be found here. The Forum Guidelines are a must read for any newcomers. The forum moderators (listed below) can choose to lock a thread, delete a post, or infract a user at any time if they have reason to do so. Every global rule applies to this forum.

If you are a new user unsure of where to start or are in need of additional advice for rating, posting teams, or anything else RMT-related, you can direct your questions to one of the following staff members:
Official TRs

Aside from participating in RMT on the forums, you are also welcome to join our PS and Discord communities in order to get your teams rated or rate other people's teams in real-time. We also run various workshops and activities to help people in a live setting and bring our members closer to form a tight-knit community. We recommend all raters, both new and experienced, to join in the discussions.

We also encourage you to participate in the Rating Activities section. There are excellent resources and activities available for aspiring raters to enjoy and learn from, such as Rating Basics, a place where raters can always turn to for advice, the RMT Tutoring program, and the Rate of the Week and RMT of the Week projects, which aim to reward the efforts of unbadged raters and people who make quality RMTs, respectively. We also have our own video series on YouTube that is targeted as an interactive resource for aspiring raters, as the usual detailed reading that people need to do to learn about rating can get quite tedious.

We hope you enjoy your time here! Happy posting :)

General RMT Rules
Credit to dragonuser for the original thread

Please read this thread for more detailed guidelines and resources before posting an RMT.

Follow these simple rules when writing an RMT:

#1. Don't post incomplete teams - this means having all six Pokemon with EV spreads and moves.

#2. Make sure your team is competitive, and play with your team before putting it up for rate. We as a community want teams that have been battle tested so that the obvious flaws have been hammered out. This is particularly because just by playing with a team, you yourself can figure out what is wrong with your team. You don't need other people to help you quite yet - and to be blunt, you're just being lazy or have the wrong idea of what the RMT forum is if you're posting teams you spent fifteen minutes creating. Make a team, stick with it, play for it for a while, and then come back and ask for help. We’re not going to make perfect teams for you.

#3. Learn the game and lurk more if you are inexperienced. While many of the teams require a complete overhaul simply because the team has not been tested, many other teams require complete overhaul because the team maker has little idea what they may be doing. Posting the team is then a fruitless endeavour - instead sign up for the Apprentice Program or take the time to better learn the game on your own.

#4. Be descriptive. Be as detailed as possible. Each Pokémon on your team should have a small paragraph describing these 3 things: 1) A reason for choosing that Pokémon, 2) the Pokémon's role on the team, and 3) a short description of its set. Don't forget to mention exactly what your Pokémon brings to the team. Here are examples of what to do, and what not to do:
Jirachi @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Serene Grace
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
- Iron Head
- Ice Punch
- U-turn
- Healing Wish

I decided to use Jirachi because I needed a Steel type and a Revenge Killer for my team. [1] It's my only Fairy resist, being able to switch into stuff like Gardevoir. It also handles fast threats that my team would otherwise have issues with. [2] Ice Punch is needed to revenge-kill DD Dragonite who is a massive threat to my team. Healing Wish provides my team valuable support, and the Scarf is needed so that Jirachi can revenge-kill various threats. [3]

Jirachi @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Serene Grace
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
- Iron Head
- Ice Punch
- U-turn
- Healing Wish

Jirachi is my favourite Pokemon. [1] It can sweep a lot of unprepared teams. [2] Iron Head for STAB, Ice Punch for coverage, U-turn for scouting, Healing Wish for support. [3]

We recommend at least three lines of description for each Pokemon. Having three lines is not absolutely mandatory, but it's a good guideline to gauge if you have written enough or not.

#5. Use a readable format (PO or PS importable are good) and layout (no annoying fonts, colours etc). Images are not necessary, but definitely help make your RMT more attractive for raters to read. Here is a comprehensive list of image resources and instructions on how to include images in your RMT:

how to get an image onto your rmt in the rich text post editor (images by user: trinitrotoluene; operating system on display: os x):
  1. right-click (windows) / control+click (os x) the image you want. image
  2. select the "copy image url" option that appears on the drop-down menu that appears. image
  3. after doing this, return to the post editor window. in the post editor window, click on the icon in the toolbar that looks like a picture of a mountain. image
  4. you will be given a prompt that allows you to paste an image url. image
  5. paste your image url in the prompt. image
once that is done, your image should appear in the rich text editor window like this!

Here are a couple of sample RMT formats you can follow when posting your team:

#6. You can only post one new RMT every two weeks, and don't "bump" your team more than once.

Here are the rules for any other poster:

#1. Make sure that your post has is constructive in some way. Compliments and similar posts belong in VMs. If you're not posting a full rate, try to at least ask a question about certain choices you don't understand, or how the team deals with a certain threat. "Where is my shoutout ;[" and "nice team" are not acceptable. Contentless posts will be deleted.

#2. Before rating in a tier, make sure you have enough knowledge of the metagame. Any rate that shows a blatant lack of knowledge of that particular tier will be deleted.

#3. Don't mini-mod. Telling someone else they're breaking a rule is fine, but bossing other people around is not. If the only thing you're planning to post is "add descriptions", then use VMs. Including it alongside a rate is fine though.

-----------------------------------

How to Rate
Credit to Harsha for the content

While it's often easy to look at teams and point out weaknesses, this is definitely not the way aspiring team raters and badged raters alike should be rating teams. In this thread we'll be breaking down how to rate in a series of systematic steps, that when followed, will be sure to produce a good rate. First and foremost, there are many helpful resources that can help out throughout a rate. Damage calculators allow you to easily find evidence to support changes for the team, and allow you to understand how the team can deal with threats. The threat lists are often good resources to see how Pokemon are kept in check, and we'd recommend that you check them out. They also give common offensive and defensive threats, which is helpful when memory fails you. Once these are sorted, you're ready to make a good rate.

1) Take a look at the team
This may be the most obvious step, but it's often an overlooked element from what I've seen. Many are simply looking at the team and checking for weaknesses—you might argue that you've looked at the team at this point. That isn't true. When looking at the team, you are trying to find the purpose of that team, whether it be laying down as many entry hazards as possible to guarantee a Lucario sweep or using defensive prowess and residual damage to keep every Pokemon in check and force switches. Looking at the purpose ensures that you'll simply try and further that, be it through changing an EV spread to help accomplish that or changing a redundant Pokemon.

2) Try to make the team more efficient
This is the next step. Many people just blindly suggest changes to the team, but I would argue that after a certain amount of changes, the team is no longer theirs, but you have built a new one. By attempting to make a team more efficient, you are suggesting material ranging from changing an EV spread so that Dragonite will outspeed Starmie after 1 Dragon Dance and will attain an easier sweep to changing a redundant Choice Band Dragonite to a Magnezone because the team already has Salamence and Haxorus. This usually will be enough to already eliminate potential threats; you can see from the second example that now Skarmory is less of a threat, along with Forretress.

A note: changing too much is not acceptable, in blunt terms. We're looking to make a team more efficient, not build a new one. Teams that need a change of 4-5 Pokemon generally aren't worth your time, and the maker should usually be referred to Battling 101 if anything.

3) Take a step back
This is what I usually do after step 2. When you are done, you should look at what you've actually done to the team. Believe it or not, you can actually open more holes by suggesting something to further a team, and as such, this is where you try to cover those holes. I generally like to make smaller suggestions here, as if the team is already efficient, there shouldn't be many holes left. Suggestions such as "use an Air Balloon to make Heatran a better check to Dragons, Choice Scarf Landorus, and SubToxic Gliscor" is what I consider a smaller change, and it can actually help immensely. Moveset changes, EV spread changes, and similar things belong here. Generally, changing a Pokemon to deal with a threat is not what we want to see.

These three steps can actually be broken down into paragraph format. You can try and make the team more efficient in the first, and then patch up holes in the second. Additionally, we like to recommend bolding the changes, as it not only makes the rates easier to read, but the team builder will not have to always read through a massive wall of text. At the end, we like to always add the sets of the changes in hide tags in this format:

Pokemon @ Item | Ability
Nature | x / y / z
- Move 1
- Move 2
- Move 3
- Move 4

However, people that like to add sets as the rate progresses generally like this format:

Pokemon @ Item | Ability
Nature | x / y / z
Move 1 | Move 2 | Move 3 | Move 4

These are basically up to the rater, but most of us appreciate easy-to-read sets, and there's no doubt that the team builder will too. Making a legible post often tells the op that you care, and he or she will be more likely to take those suggestions into account. That's all there is to it—rating is much easier than it sounds when everything is broken up! Practice makes perfect, and likewise, rating consistently makes rating an easier practice in general. Try and follow these guidelines, and you'll be sure to make a good rater!

Further rating guidelines can be found here. See here for some useful tips on common mistakes that raters should avoid.

If you would like to have your rates critiqued or would like advice on how to improve as a rater, be sure to head over to Rating Basics, where our staff members will help you out.
