Sharpedo

Overview
########

  • Hits obscenely hard with Strong Jaws boosted Crunch
  • Has good coverage
  • Mega Evolution has slightly increased bulk, which lets it take some priority attacks
  • Has to give up a moveset for Protect to attain a speed boost before mega evolving
  • Somewhat reliant on prior damage and hazard support

SHARK ATTACK
########
name: SHARK ATTACK
move 1: Protect
move 2: Crunch
move 3: Hydro Pump / Waterfall
move 4: Ice Fang / Poison Fang
ability: Speed Boost
item: Sharpedite
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Naughty / Adamant

Moves
========

  • Protect is used so that Sharpedo can get a Speed Boost safely before Mega Evolving, and also lets it scout the opponent's moveset.
  • Crunch is Sharpedo's main STAB move, as it has good coverage and hits for a lot of damage thanks to Strong Jaw.
  • Hydro Pump is used to deal more damage to physical walls, like Hippowdon and Donphan, than Waterfall.
  • Waterfall can be used so Sharpedo has a chance to flinch slower Pokemon, and lets Sharpedo run a nature that doesn't lower its defenses.
  • Ice Fang is used to hit Dragon-types like Hydreigon and Zygarde, who can both tank Sharpedo's attacks with little trouble.
  • Poison Fang is used so that Sharpedo can get past Fairy-types like Florges and Aromatisse.

Set Details
========

  • EV spread is used to max out Sharpedo's attack and speed
  • Naughty nature is used with Hydro Pump so that Sharpedo can attack with both offensive stats while lowering its least useful defensive stat. An Adamant nature is used with Waterfall as Sharpedo's only attacking physically

Usage Tips
========

  • If facing slower teams, it should Mega Evolve immediately so that it can punch holes in the opposing team as soon as possible, since it does not need the speed boost
  • Against more offensive teams, it should use Protect if it is trying to clean late game, so it can outspeed slower scarfers before Mega Evolving. In some cases, it might need to Protect twice before Mega Evolving if they have a faster scarfer, such as Infernape, on their team.

Team Options
========
  • Hazard support helps Sharpedo in wallbreaking / cleaning, so Swampert, Chesnaught, Jirachi, Froslass, and Roserade all are all good partners
  • Since Sharpedo is best used with hazards, pairing it with spinblockers like Chandelure and Froslass, or fast Taunt users like Mega Aerodactyl, Crobat, or Azelf both benefit it greatly
  • Pivots that have access to Volt Switch, U-turn and Baton Pass, like Forretress, Raikou, and Gligar all make good partners, as they can get in Sharpedo safely without it taking any damage. Celebi gets a special mention as Weakness Policy Baton Pass sets make Sharpedo an extremely potent offensive threat

Life Orb
########
name: Life Orb
move 1: Protect
move 2: Crunch
move 3: Waterfall
move 4: Ice Beam
ability: Speed Boost
item: Life Orb
evs: 252 Atk / 24 SpA / 232 Spe
nature: Naughty

Moves
========
  • Protect is used to get a Speed Boost without taking damage, and also scouts for the opponent's moveset
  • Crunch is a Dark-type STAB attack that OHKOs Jirachi and Starmie
  • Waterfall is used as a Water-type STAB attack that abuses Sharpedo's speed boosts to try and get a flinch, and also has good coverage, hitting the plethora of Fire- and Ground-types in the tier for super effective damage
  • Ice Beam is used so that Sharpedo can hit Pokemon like Chesnaught, Hydreigon, and Toxicroak super effectively

Set Details
========

  • The given EV spread is used to maximize Sharpedo's physical attacks and outspeed Adamant variants of Scarf Krookodile, with the rest of the EVs dumped into Special Attack so that it can hit Chesnaught, Hydreigon, and Toxicroak for as much damage as possible
  • Life Orb is used to increase its damage output
  • Naughty nature is used to increase its Attack stat without lowering its Special Attack, and is used over Lonely so it can take less damage from priority attacks

Usage Tips
========

  • Should be saved until late game, when the opposing team's Pokemon have been weakened, as it usually needs a fair amount of prior damage to clean
  • Should not be switched in at any cost, as it takes a lot even from resisted hits due to its terrible defenses
  • Appreciates the removal of priority users so that it can clean late-game uninterrupted

Team Options
========

  • Hazard support from Pokemon like Forretress, Froslass, Swampert, Chesnaught. and Jirachi are all appreciated as they wear down Pokemon that try to switch into Sharpedo, making it easier for it to clean late game
  • Pivots like Mega Ampharos, Gligar and Rotom-H make for good partners, as they can keep up offensive momentum, slowly wearing down the opposing team, while bringing in Sharpedo safely

Other Options
########

  • Destiny Bond
  • Aqua Jet
  • Earthquake
  • Zen Headbutt
