Not open for further replies.
Hi, its time for a new victim. The results of the voting will be calculated during the weekends.

Checks: Keldeo (nameless90 ) / Dugtrio (david0895 )
Counters: Rest Suicune (Martin ) / Calm Mind Tapu Fini (Jucherz )

Our victim this week is Z-Wild Charge Tapu Koko.

Tapu Koko @ Electrium Z
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Wild Charge
- Hidden Power Ice / Brave Bird
- Taunt / Brave Bird
- U-turn

Z-Wild Charge Tapu Koko allows it to turn the tables on opponents expecting the SpA set and allows it to take out Chansey, Heatran and AV Magearna. Hidden Power Ice supplies Tapu Koko with the BoltBeam coverage and allows it to defeat Zygarde, Landorus-T and Garchomp. Taunt takes advantage of Koko's great Spe to disable Recovery, Defog or set-ups from the likes of Mew, Smeargle and Magearna. Brave Bird is also an option for Tapu Koko to take care of Mega Venusaur and Tangrowth which walls this set.

SCARF DUGTRIO AS A CHECK

Dugtrio @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Arena Trap
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Memento
- Pursuit/Toxic

Dugtrio normally cannot trap Tapu Koko due to Koko's access to U-Turn. It also normally cannot revenge Volcarona because at +1 Volcarona outspeeds and OHKOs assuming Rocks are up vs the Sash variant (Ground Z just dies). Greninja is yet another threat that could normally outspeed and take care of Duggy. With a scarf on, however, this is remedied. Koko no longer gets off freely vs Duggy:

252 Atk Dugtrio Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 312-368 (111 - 130.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Those other threats I mentioned don't get off either. Volcarona is ofc OHKOed by SE, Greninja 2HKOed by EQ.

That being said, Dugtrio's bulk is the epitome of infamous. It cannot switch into any of Koko's attacks or it will die...right?

4 SpA Tapu Koko Hidden Power Ice vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dugtrio: 112-134 (53 - 63.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

That's right, folks. You read that correctly. If Koko is not carrying Brave Bird and does not predict that Duggy can, you know, actually switch in, and then go for U-Turn immediately, Dugtrio will come in and it will kill it. Brave Bird does OHKO though.

The set is standard - maximum speed and attack, EQ as the STAB, SE for Volcarona and general coverage, Memento for momentum and easing set-up, Pursuit for those pesky Latios and ghosts that think they can just switch out or Toxic to cripple a defensive mon.

tl;dr Scarf Dugtrio can switch in and freely defeat Koko; just watch out for Brave Bird, and it just wins.

Celesteela is Life

Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 SpD
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Slack Off
- Whirlwind

Hippowdon is a Counter to Z-Wild Charge Tapu Koko, being immune to Koko's Wild Charge and eating up the rest of its moves easily, while also being able to heal back up with Slack Off. Hippowdon threatens Tapu Koko with a OHKO with EQ after Sand damage.

4 SpA Tapu Koko Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 16 SpD Hippowdon: 108-128 (25.7 - 30.4%) -- 46.5% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
4 SpA Tapu Koko Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 16 SpD Hippowdon: 108-128 (25.7 - 30.4%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock, 1 layer of Spikes, and Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Hippowdon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 272-324 (96.7 - 115.3%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO

Counter: Excadrill

Excadrill @ Focus Sash
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Rapid Spin
- Toxic

Even without defensive investment, Excadrill takes little damage from any of Tapu Koko's attacks and can reliably pivot into Koko. Exca's Earthquake is an easy OHKO. While Koko can U-turn out, Excadrill can cost the opposing team momentum by setting rocks, removing hazards, or using Toxic on a switchin. Although the Mold Breaker set is shown here, the Sand Rush set can work as well.

Calcs:
252 Atk Tapu Koko U-turn vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Excadrill: 53-62 (14.6 - 17.1%) -- possible 6HKO
4 SpA Tapu Koko Hidden Power Ice vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Excadrill: 59-70 (16.3 - 19.3%) -- possible 6HKO
252 Atk Tapu Koko Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Excadrill: 90-106 (24.9 - 29.3%) -- 100% chance to 4HKO

252 Atk Mold Breaker Excadrill Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 386-456 (137.3 - 162.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Camerupt-Mega @ Cameruptite
Ability: Magma Armor
EVs: 56 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 196 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute / Stealth Rock / Toxic / Yawn
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power Ice / Nature Power / Rock Slide

252 Atk Tapu Koko Brave Bird vs. 56 HP / 4 Def Camerupt-Mega: 119-141 (40.3 - 47.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252+ SpA Sheer Force Camerupt-Mega Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 4- SpD Tapu Koko: 390-460 (138.7 - 163.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Takes literally nothing from Gigavolt Havoc and can Sub up on the U-turn out.

Check:Scarf Lando-T

Landorus-Therian @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Stone Edge
- Explosion

While hidden power ice does 2hko, its a good hard check to koko as brave bird does very little damage and can easily outspeed and ohko it with earthquake.

-1 252 Atk Tapu Koko Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Landorus-Therian: 87-103 (27.2 - 32.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

4 SpA Tapu Koko Hidden Power Ice vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 204-240 (63.9 - 75.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 408-480 (145.1 - 170.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Check: Alolan Marowak.

Marowak-Alolan @ Thick Club
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Shadow Bone
- Fire Punch / Flare Blitz
- Bonemerang / Earthquake
- Swords Dance / Stealth Rock / Will-O-Wisp

... Again. Look, it has a great typing, okay? =P Anyway, yeah, Wak is one of the tier's best blanket checks to Electric-types, and this matchup is no exception. Taunt variants are hard-walled, but it's still only a check against BB variants if they predict on the switch with SR down. Even if Koko U-Turns out, just click Shadow Bone few of its teammates will enjoy switching into an attack from this monster.

252 Atk Tapu Koko Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Marowak-Alola: 111-131 (42.5 - 50.1%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO (guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock)
252+ Atk Thick Club Marowak-Alola Bonemerang (2 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 396-468 (140.9 - 166.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Thick Club Marowak-Alola Shadow Bone vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 252-297 (89.6 - 105.6%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO (guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock)

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Scald
- Recover
- Toxic

Quagsire as a counter. Quagsire doesn't enjoy being Taunted, but it beats this Tapu Koko set easily. It is immune to Wild Charge and Brave Bird only 5HKOs.

252 Atk Tapu Koko Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 96-114 (24.3 - 28.9%) -- 1.9% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
4 SpA Tapu Koko Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Quagsire: 59-70 (14.9 - 17.7%) -- possible 8HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
Tapu Koko Wild Charge vs. Quagsire: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time

0 Atk Quagsire Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 218-258 (77.5 - 91.8%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Check: DD Zygarde

Zygarde @ Lum Berry
Ability: Aura Break
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Thousand Arrows
- Outrage
- ExtremeSpeed/Stone Edge

4 SpA Tapu Koko Hidden Power Ice vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Zygarde: 176-208 (49.1 - 58.1%) -- 95.3% chance to 2HKO
(Other moves does less)
252+ Atk Zygarde Thousand Arrows vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 308-366 (109.6 - 130.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Zygarde is pretty effective as a check because it has enough bulk to stomach one HP Ice (despite the 4x weaknesses) and OHKO in return with the most spammable Ground move (not even affected by random Grass Terrain).

You can even set-up a DD if Tapu Koko doesn't run Taunt.

Counter: Gastrodon

Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Scald
- Recover
- Toxic
- Earth Power

Gastrodon's Ground typing grants it an immunity to Electric attacks, so it doesn't fear Gigavolt Havoc at all. It takes pitiful damage from HP Ice thanks to its excellent special defense and Water typing. Brave Bird does less than 50% to it even without any Def investment, allowing it to recover off all the damage with ease. It really only fears Taunt. Meanwhile, Gastrodon threatens Tapu Koko with Earth Power, which as a good chance of OHKOing if Naive nature (guaranteed after SR damage).

Calcs:
252 Atk Tapu Koko Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Gastrodon: 164-193 (38.4 - 45.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
4 SpA Tapu Koko Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 34-41 (7.9 - 9.6%)
252 Atk Tapu Koko U-turn vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Gastrodon: 96-113 (22.5 - 26.5%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Gastrodon Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 4- SpD Tapu Koko: 254-302 (90.3 - 107.4%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO

Ferrothorn as a Counter:

Yeah, it hates taunt, but Ferrothorn takes 0 from basically anything, and forces koko out easily, chipping it on its u-turn heavily:

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Relaxed Nature
- Spikes
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip

Steel/Grass and amazing defense means you take 44.3% max from z-Wild Charge, and virtually nothing from U-turn or 35% from Brave Bird, while Koko dies back. You easily threaten it out with Gyro Ball, and can set up spikes or a leech seed in return.

Calcs:
252 Atk Tapu Koko Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Ferrothorn in Electric Terrain: 132-156 (37.5 - 44.3%)
252 Atk Tapu Koko Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Ferrothorn: 81-96 (23 - 27.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Tapu Koko U-turn vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Ferrothorn: 47-56 (13.3 - 15.9%) -- possibly the worst move ever
0 Atk Ferrothorn Gyro Ball (129 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 151-178 (53.7 - 63.3%)

Sufficed to say, Tapu Koko kills itself a lot faster than it kills Ferrothorn.

Swampert @ Swampertite
Ability: Damp
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch
- Stealth Rock / Stone Edge / Superpower

Swampert is immune to Wild Charge and avoids 2HKOs from all of Tapu Koko's other moves (with the exception of Brave Bird if more than 1 layer of Spikes is up pre-mega), allowing it to switch in, Mega Evolve, and OHKO with Earthquake or a Rain-boosted Waterfall.

Offensive:
252+ Atk Swampert-Mega Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 183-216 (65.1 - 76.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Swampert-Mega Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko in Rain: 274-324 (97.5 - 115.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Swampert-Mega Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 458-540 (162.9 - 192.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Swampert-Mega Ice Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 114-135 (40.5 - 48%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ Atk Swampert-Mega Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 153-180 (54.4 - 64%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Swampert-Mega Superpower vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 91-108 (32.3 - 38.4%) -- 98% chance to 3HKO

Defensive:
4 SpA Tapu Koko Hidden Power Ice vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Swampert-Mega: 39-46 (11.4 - 13.4%) -- possible 8HKO
252 Atk Tapu Koko U-turn vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Swampert-Mega: 65-77 (19 - 22.5%) -- possible 5HKO
252 Atk Tapu Koko Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Swampert-Mega: 111-131 (32.5 - 38.4%) -- 98.1% chance to 3HKO
252 Atk Tapu Koko Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Swampert: 131-155 (38.4 - 45.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
