Special :salamence:

As for our next victim... we have a recent AFD suspect mon as well as one that has been putting up an impressive showing in RUPL with an 80% winrate after week 1: Thundurus-Therian!

Thundurus-Therian (M) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Volt Absorb
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Thunderbolt
- Focus Blast
- Grass Knot

After one week of RUPL, thundurus-therian has proven once again that he is one of the premier breaking threats in RU. Boasting an impressive base 145 Sp Atk with a fast and easy way to boost it in nasty plot as well as decent coverage puts thundurus in a unique position to ravage most teams in the tier. Combined with this are thundys immense support options with pivot moves such as volt switch and u-turn, access to knock off, and ability to use thunder wave to spread paralysis leaving the opponent guessing on correct counterplay. Can you avoid being left thunderstruck?

Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 SpA / 108 SpD / 148 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Aura Sphere
- Psychic Noise
- Icy Wind
- Calm Mind

This Rachi spread is able to survive 2 Tbolts, then you’re able to lower speed with Icy Wind, set up a Calm Mind and attack back with Psychic Noise. For STAB i’m running Psychic Noise to stop things like Hippo from healing up, and Aura Sphere for things like Cyclizar and steel types like Coba. Speed investment isn’t entirely necessary, as you really only need to outspeed Cyc after an Icy Wind drop, so investment into HP and Def could be done if desired. Tera Fighting provides a resistance to stray Knocks, while also threatening the ever present Cyclizar more with Aura Sphere.

252+ SpA Jirachi Icy Wind vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Thundurus-Therian: 132-156 (44.1 - 52.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252+ SpA Jirachi Psychic Noise vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Tera Electric Thundurus-Therian: 202-238 (67.5 - 79.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

- Stun Spore
- Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain
- Foul Play

For some reason the set doesn’t have TBlast Fly, so in this scenario it is “walled” by Amoonguss. Standard spread provides bulk in numerous matchups. Grass and Poison typing resists all of the moves present in this set, and you do decent damage with sludge bomb in return. Stun Spore allows you to revenge kill if things go awry, but generally you should be able to wall with Amoong. You also have to benefit of regenerator, so if you do get chipped heavily, you can heal up passively.

0 SpA Amoonguss Sludge Bomb vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Tera Electric Thundurus-Therian: 102-121 (34.1 - 40.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 84 SpD Amoonguss: 87-102 (20.1 - 23.6%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

On a side note, can we get a suspect on this mon, entirely dumb that this can threaten all of its “counters” with a slight move change up, or even just after a nasty plot, entirely dumb.

Ability: Trace
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 248 HP / 220 SpD / 40 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Agility
- Ice Beam
- Recover
- Tri Attack

On this particular set, you Trace Thundurus-Therian's Volt Absorb to become immune to Thunderbolt and then Tera Ghost out of the Focus Blast weakness, leaving only Grass Knot to do very minimal damage to you. You can also use this as an opportunity to Agility to become faster than Thundy.
Calcs:
+6 252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Grass Knot (60 BP) vs. 248 HP / 220+ SpD Eviolite Tera Ghost Porygon2: 145-171 (38.8 - 45.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Specs Gengar can be a nice revenge killer against Thundy-T with a decent chance of OHKOing it from full with Sludge Wave. The Tera type is up to you, but not much in the tier wants to eat a Specs Tera Ghost Shadow Ball.
252 SpA Choice Specs Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Tera Electric Thundurus-Therian: 279-328 (93.3 - 109.6%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO

Venusaur @ Leftovers
Ability: Chlorophyll
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 252 HP / 160 SpA / 96 Spe
Modest Nature
- Sludge Bomb

Pretty standard tanky Venusaur set. Venusaur can live any hit from Thundy at +2 and 2HKO with Sludge Bomb. Knock is preferred to Grass coverage or a status move here for better progress making against stuff like AV bike and Taunt users, respectively. 96 Spe EVs allow you to outspeed max speed base 60s like Magnezone. Tera Ground is a failsafe since this Venusaur set can't tank 2 Tera Electric Thunderbolts at +2 (what can, really?), although for what it's worth, a Tera Ground EP from Venusaur cleanly OHKOes Tera Electric Thundy.
+2 252 SpA Thundurus Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Venusaur: 143-168 (39.2 - 46.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery.
160+ SpA Venusaur Sludge Bomb vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Thundurus-Therian: 150-177 (50.1 - 59.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Gardevoir @ Choice Scarf

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Tera Type: Fairy
Timid Nature
- Psychic

- Destiny Bond

Trace lets you switch in and copy Volt Absorb, making you immune to Thunderbolt/Volt Switch, Focus Blast is 4x resisted, and Grass Knot barely does anything even at +2

+2 252 SpA Thundurus Grass Knot (60 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gardevoir: 113-133 (40.7 - 48%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Moonblast is a clean 2HKO back and with just a bit of chip, Tera Fairy Moonblast is a 1HKO

252 SpA Gardevoir Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Thundurus: 181-214 (60.5 - 71.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Tera Fairy Gardevoir Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Thundurus: 242-286 (80.9 - 95.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Empoleon and Chansey are the only mons in the tier that aren't scared of either of Gardevoir's STABs and they're also crippled by Trick. Trick also cripples any Thundurus-T that stays in, trying to predict a switch, by locking it into a move and not letting it get up a Nasty Plot + making it vulnerable to Rocks (although it can get scary late game).

Gastrodon is a check to thundurus therain. When thundy-t/thundy-i was in UU during either Gen 6,7 or 8 (idk about the specific time period or form, just trust me on it I remember that it happened) gastrodon could use float stone to hard wall it. This is a similar tech. With float stone, +2 grass knot doesn't even OHKO and gastrodon can do a variety of things from here. It can recover off the damage, clear smog away the boosts, mirror coat back the damage to thundy-t, most likely koing it or set up stealth rocks. Sticky hold means this gastrodon tech always works, but storm drain could be substituted out if wanted.

- Knock Off
Goodra is a counter to thundurus therian (I found that salamence actually doesn't counter thundy-t, so I've changed it). Goodra basically can wall thundy-t for a long time with assault vest, with even +2 focus blast only guarenteed to 2hit ko if there is a layer of stealth rocks and 3 layers of spikes, which is to say anything less and goodra is most likely surviving. From here, it can either OHKO it or heavily damage thundy-t. With Sap Sipper, if goodra switches in on grass knot, rock slide will always OHKO it, otherwise it will be 2hit ko'ing. Dragon tail allows goodra to phase out thundy-t if it cannot take it on for much longer, giving the team breathing room. E-quake means that if thundy-t tera's, then goodra can potentially ohko it outright from full. Finally, knock off removes thundy-t's item and means that if it successfully phases it, thundy-t will not really like switching back in if rocks are up.

Check: :pmd/Rotom-Heat: look at this little guy, aren’t they so cute? They’re also an absolute menace for thunder god.

I’m submitting the bulky nasty plot set, with enough speed to outspeed Jolly Gyarados and Slither Wing.

Rotom-Heat @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 248 HP / 44 SpD / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Overheat
- Volt Switch
- Nasty Plot
- Pain Split

Rotom’s typing makes it notorious for checking extremely random combinations of Pokémon. Here, Rotom resists and eats electric stab quite comfortably, and is only ever worried about focus blast. Here’s what that looks like:

+2 252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 44 SpD Rotom-Heat: 256-302 (84.4 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

narrowly avoids an OHKO, so Rotom needs to be at full health to get damage off, but in return, Thundurus needs to gamble on focus blast or risks doing next to nothing to Rotom. The real reason I’m a big fan of Rotom into Thundurus though, is that it eats a Tera blast fly from nasty plot Thundurus as well, an arguably more common option than focus blast, which is something the grass type checks can’t boast. Rotom can’t kill Thundurus in return, but does significant damage, enough for almost anything faster to revenge kill.

0 SpA Rotom-Heat Overheat vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Thundurus-Therian: 175-207 (58.5 - 69.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Iron leaves is one of those pokemon that if you haven’t played against it much, you might think it’s pretty frail. Its bulk on both sides of the spectrum is actually fantastic for an offensive pokemon, and its typing allows it to comfortably eat multiple hits from Nasty Plot Thundundundurus lacking Tera Blast Fly.

+2 252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Thunderbolt vs. 96 HP / 0 SpD Iron Leaves: 149-176 (43.1 - 51%) -- 3.9% chance to 2HKO

Leaves can switch in, let thundurus get to +2, and either set up if the opponent has used Tera, or just start hitting it in the case the thundurus could Tera Blast. Psyblade is a clean 2HKO from unboosted Iron Leaves. It’s even faster than Thundurus without its booster energy, meaning it can switch in any time as long as it isn’t critically low on health.

Rhyperior is able to make great use of its Lightning Rod ability to check Thundurus when paired with a Flying Tera type. Rhyperior's natural weakness to both of Thundy's main coverage options is flipped by the Tera, and unsuspecting opponents who see an opportunity to hit with super effective Electric damage will be surprised by the immunity. Stone Edge destroys Thundurus, and no single Tera type will protect it from being 2HKOed by either of Rhyperior's STAB moves. The turns granted by either the sudden Tera or Lightning Rod can let Rhyperior set up stealth rocks, Swords Dance to boost its already incredible damage, or start firing off its powerful attacks at the opposing team.

EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Okidogi is one of RU’s premier fighting types sporting a monstrous base 128 atk combined with high power STAB moves such as Close Combat and Gunk Shot making him one of the tiers hardest hitters with a Choice Band. In addition to this deadly STAB combination, Okidogi’s movepool is rounded out by one of the best utility movies in the game in Knock Off as well as Psychic Fangs to provide coverage for opposing poisons which might otherwise give Okidogi a hard time breaking. All this is also backed by an amazing ability in Toxic Chain which gives all of Okidogi’s moves the chance to badly poison the opponent. How will you answer this behemoth?

So houndstone is actually a counter, I didn't think it was but it is definetely. Houndstone is able to take basically any hit from okidogi and take negligable damage from it. Tera dark knock off does 57% max, and then houndstone pain splits off the damage easily. Tera Poison helps houndstone wall okidogi if knock off is doing too much damage. as while it does become weak to psychic fangs, that does 33% max. Psychic fangs deals massive damage to okidogi, with it always 2hit ko'ing it. Body Press can help if okidogi decides to tera dark with a 24% chance to 2hit ko okidogi. Pain split allows houndstone to keep itself healthy in the face of okidogi while making it easier to revenge kill if okidogi somehow wins the 1v1 (unlikely, but weirder things have happened). Finally, will-o-wisp is a decent neutral move if you can't decide whether or not they might tera dark, with it severly crippling okidogi no matter what.
