PU Toucannon

uploaded -zard

Toucannon fills a rare niche in the PU metagame as a physically offensive Flying-type. Besides Archeops, Toucannon is the strongest Flying-type in PU and one of the few that have access to Brave Bird. Its role in the metagame is a strong wallbreaker capable of running strong mixed sets to break through bulkier Pokemon with help from its diverse coverage options. Boomburst and Brave Bird make Toucannon a tough Pokemon to switch into due to their high Base Power, difference in typing, and ability to let it inflict both special and physical damage. However, despite Boomburst being a very powerful STAB move, Toucannon's base Special Attack is very low and makes it difficult to deal with special walls like Munchlax and Type: Null. Toucannon's lack of Speed and bulk also makes it very underwhelming against offensive teams and makes it hard to get off an attack at all. Toucannon is also prone to being revenge killed easily and worn down by Life Orb, Stealth Rock, and Brave Bird recoil.

Moves
========

Boomburst is Toucannon's strongest move and is easily spammable because of its huge Base Power. Boomburst also benefits from being a special move, as it hits physical walls such as Weezing, Musharna, and Mesprit, which can potentially switch in on Toucannon otherwise. Brave Bird is Toucannon's strongest Flying-type STAB move and hits anything Boomburst doesn't hit harder, which includes Pokemon with high Special Defense stats such as Audino and Ghost-types like Oricorio-G and Sableye. Brave Bird also rounds out Toucannon's role as a mixed wallbreaker by letting it inflict physical damage. Bullet Seed is a good coverage move on Toucannon thanks to its ability Skill Link turning it into a 125-Base Power Grass-type move. This helps with specific Pokemon that are weak to Grass like Lanturn, Carracosta, and especially Golem and Regirock, which are either OHKOed or 2HKOed on the switch. Overheat is for covering Steel-types such as Ferroseed and Togedemaru, which would otherwise wall Toucannon.

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Attack investment maximizes Toucannon's Special Attack stat, making Boomburst easily spammable and letting Overheat hit hard. Patching up its Special Attack also makes Toucannon a better mixed attacker by allowing it to hit both physically and specially defensive Pokemon equally hard. Toucannon does not run Attack investment because its massive base 120 Attack stat is enough to KO or dent bulky specially defensive Pokemon like Clefairy and Lanturn without investment. Life Orb is the preferred item because running a mixed set requires immediate power and the ability to switch between moves, which Choice items prevent, so it isn't as easily forced out by Pokemon switching in. Rash is the optimal nature because Toucannon's Speed is still enough to outspeed maximum invested base 50 Speed Pokemon like Aggron without sacrificing power. Naive can also be used to outspeed Pokemon such as Jolly Golurk and Ursaring while Speed tying with Pokemon such as Abomasnow and Pawniard. Since Toucannon is so slow, a positive-Speed nature is not required to accomplish much, usually. Skill Link is the most useful ability Toucannon has, as it helps to boost Bullet Seed, turning it into a 125-Base Power coverage move.

Usage Tips
========

Toucannon is a mixed wallbreaker, which gives it the ability to adapt and deal with different Pokemon that may come in on it. This makes it hard to switch into, but prediction plays a big role in using it effectively, because it can be worn down quickly thanks to Life Orb recoil and its Stealth Rock weakness. Leading with Toucannon can be advantageous against some entry hazard leads like Ferroseed, as it can put immediate pressure on the opponent to possibly sacrifice something to Toucannon. Another job Toucannon has is to weaken bulkier Pokemon, since very few Pokemon resist its coverage. After Toucannon has weakened the opponent's team, a hard hitter or setup sweeper it is paired with can finish off the game. To achieve this goal, it is important to set Toucannon up with favorable matchups by double switching or via pivot switches; otherwise, Toucannon will not be able get off attacks due to its frailty and low Speed. Do not feel too pressured to preserve Toucannon because it loses its usefulness late-game, when opposing players' slower Pokemon are more likely to be gone.

Team Options
========

Toucannon works well with fast, strong hitters that can take advantage of its wallbreaking abilities. This includes Pokemon like Archeops, Magmortar, and Primeape, which appreciate Toucannon getting rid of Pokemon like Gastrodon, Weezing, and Lanturn. Primeape is particularly good because of its pivoting capabilities with U-turn and benefits from Toucannon's potential to severely weaken an opposing team giving it a good chance at sweeping late-game. Other pivoting Pokemon such as Lanturn, Mesprit, and Alolan Persian can also keep momentum and produce favorable matchups for Toucannon. Lanturn and Mesprit's slow pivoting moves especially make it easier for Toucannon to safely come in. In the case you want to preserve Toucannon, Pokemon like Lanturn, Regirock, and Weezing can be used as all-around good blanket checks to Pokemon coming in to revenge kill Toucannon, such as Archeops and Alolan Raichu, while at the same time contributing entry hazards to make Toucannon's job a bit easier against bulkier Pokemon such as Type: Null and Musharna by limiting switches. Toucannon naturally appreciates a Pokemon to remove hazards, such as Skuntank, because of how fast and easy it is to wear down with repeated switches into Stealth Rock on top of recoil from Life Orb and Brave Bird. On top of hazard removal, Skuntank also provides Pursuit support, which can free Toucannon of the worry of Ghost-type switch-ins to Boomburst, making it more spammable.

Other Options
=============

While being its most unique and viable set, Toucannon's mixed set can be altered or changed to suit a different role on a team or for more surprise factors. One slight change that can be made is using an alternative fourth move on Toucannon by changing Bullet Seed to Flash Cannon, since it serves a similar purpose in hitting Rock-types. Its ability can then also be changed to Sheer Force, as it better complements Flash Cannon and allows Toucannon to replace Overheat with Heat Wave, which comes with the benefit of not dropping Special Attack but is weaker overall. With Sheer Force, Flash Cannon is capable of 2HKOing physically defensive Sableye and reliably 2HKOes Regirock. Rock Blast can also be used in the fourth slot because it gives a different coverage option against Flying-types like Archeops. Both are generally outclassed by Bullet Seed, however, while Rock Blast is outclassed by even Flash Cannon. A Choice Scarf set can be used to allow Toucannon to do more towards offensive teams. Brave Bird is very strong coming off of Toucannon's invested Attack stat and can do serious damage, while Boomburst can be added in the set to hit physically bulky walls. The downside is that it is still outsped by many other boosted Pokemon and Choice Scarf users and that its main attack, Brave Bird, wears it down quickly. A Choice Band set can work with Brave Bird / U-turn / Bullet Seed / Brick Break, but while it has immediate power, it lacks the ability to switch between moves, and it is easier to get stuck in unfavorable situations. U-turn does help with this weakness, as it can easily provide slow U-turn momentum. All in all, however, it can be easily taken advantage of and retains none of the mixed coverage that Toucannon would want, making it less viable. Multiple Swords Dance sets can be run featuring either Life Orb or Flyinium Z, making Toucannon into more of a hard wallbreaker by boosting its huge Attack stat, and a choice between Rock Blast or Flame Charge, turning it into a pseudo-sweeping set. The fact that a turn of setup is required (or two if running Flame Charge) makes it more unreliable at getting off hits, though, as Toucannon can't take hits well to begin with. A Choice Specs set makes Toucannon similar to Swellow in higher tiers, which also runs a Choice Specs Boomburst set. This set runs Boomburst, Sheer Force-boosted Flash Cannon to hit Rock-types like Regirock harder, and Heat Wave to hit Steel-types. The last move slot would most likely be U-turn, since the only other thing left in Toucannon's special movepool is Hidden Power, which is most often going to be weaker than Boomburst and Flash Cannon. Roost and Substitute can be used to give Toucannon more sustainability and another tool to fight stall's status condition spam. Outside of stall, however, using a slot for Roost or Substitute limits Toucannon's coverage, and it is generally too slow to fully utilize Roost and Substitute. Much like Flame Charge, Tailwind can be added on to a set to give Toucannon a better chance of threatening more Pokemon as well as provide a nice support option for the rest of the team. The downside is sacrificing coverage.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Rock-types**: Rock-type Pokemon like Regirock and Probopass can take a Boomburst quite easily, stomach a Bullet Seed, and threaten Toucannon with Rock-type STAB moves.

**Revenge Killers**: Toucannon's Speed and typing leave it prone to being easily revenge killed by Pokemon like Lycanroc, Archeops, Jynx, and Magmortar. However, these Pokemon will find it almost impossible to safely switch in on Toucannon.

**Ghost-types**: Ghost-types assure that Toucannon is not always free to spam Boomburst, as they can potentially switch into it. Common threats are Oricorio-G, Spiritomb, and Silvally-Ghost. While these Pokemon are not completely safe from Toucannon's other coverage, the fact that they are immune to Toucannon's strongest move can make them harder to deal with.

**Electric-types**: Electric-types reliably check Toucannon by revenge killing it and resisting Toucannon's second STAB move Brave Bird. Common threats include Eelektross, Togedamaru, and Oricorio-E.

  • Toucannon is a strong wall breaker capable of running strong mixed sets to break through Def and SpD walls. the tier thanks to its powerful STAB moves.
  • Boomburst and Brave Bird make Toucannon a tough Pokemon to switch into on many teams. why?
  • Works well against many common wall Pokemon like Weezing, Gastrodon, Carracosta, Qwilfish, Lanturn and Ferroseed. I think this should go into team options
  • Can act as a lure by luring in Defense walls only to fire off a Boomburst.
  • Despite Boomburst being a very powerful STAB move, Toucannon's Base Special Attack is very low and must rely on hitting targets with low SpDef. therefore it cant do a lot of damage to bulky Pokemon like Audino
  • Toucannon also lacks speed and notable bulk which can make it less useful against Offensive teams and late game.
  • Prone to being revenge killed easily and worn down by Life Orb and Stealth Rocks. I would mention that Brave Bird recoil wears it down quickly too

Moves
========
  • Boomburst is the strongest move in Toucannon's arsenal and is easily spammable because of its huge power. It hits physical walls that come in on Toucannon very hard. Mention the physical walls
  • Brave Bird is in the set to hit anything Boomburst doesn't hit harder, like against Ghost types or strong SpDef walls. Like?
  • Bullet seed is a good coverage move on Toucannon thanks to its ability Skill Link turning it into a base 125 power Grass move. This helps with specific Pokemon weak to Grass like Gastrodon, Lanturn, and Carracosta who would otherwise wall Toucannon. Mention Regirock and Golem too imo
  • Like Bullet Seed, Overheat is specifically for coverage against Steel Types such as Ferroseed or Togedamaru.
Set Details
========
  • Toucannon is given Max SpA and Spe to be able to hit Defensive Walls hard and to outspeed them. I would say to be as fast and powerful as possible
  • Toucannon is not EVed into Atk because his massive base Atk stat is enough to KO Pokemon with Brave Bird and Bullet Seed just fine. Like what? I also think this could be reworded
  • Life Orb is used to ensure Toucannon has immediate power and the ability to switch between moves in its move set which is key for surprising opponents who might not know or guess the mixed set. remove the last part imo
  • Rash is optimal because Toucannon's speed is still enough to out speed max invested base 50 Spe Pokemon like Aggron, without sacrificing power.
  • Naive can also be used to out speed Pokemon such as Golurk and Ursaring and speed tie with Pokemon such as Abomasnow and Pawniard.
  • Skill Link is the only useful ability Toucannon has and it helps to boost Bullet Seed, making it the best option.
Usage Tips
========
  • Toucannon is hard to switch into thanks to its diverse move pool and mixed attacks, but prediction plays a big role in using it effectively. This is rather obvious but I guess its fine if the qc members dont say anything
  • Get Toucannon in on the other players walls to either weaken/kill it or threaten it out and weaken/kill the Pokemon coming in. Do you mean bring Toucannon in on bulky walls to force them out?
  • After Toucannon weakens the opponents team, a hard hitter or set up sweeper it is paired with can finish off the game.
  • The key is to set Toucannon up with favorable match ups by double switching or pivoting into it, otherwise Toucannon will not be able to easily get off attacks. This sentence reads weird
  • Do not feel too pressured to preserve Toucannon because it will usually only serve to either or weaken kill one or two Pokemon.
Team Options
========
  • Toucannon works well with fast, strong hitters that can take advantage of the cracks and holes wallbreaking Toucannon makes in the other team. This includes Pokemon like Archeops, Magmortar, and Primeape. specifically mention the mons it wallbreaks for those Pokemon
  • Primeape is particularly good because of its pivoting capabilities with U-Turn.
  • Other pivoting Pokemon such as Lanturn, Mesprit, and Persian-A can also keep momentum and produce favorable match ups for Toucannon to come in on. remove or rephrase the last part imo
  • On a Balanced team, Pokemon like Lanturn, Regirock, and Weezing can be used to provide a switch in to Pokemon coming in to revenge kill Toucannon. Mention the Pokemon that try to revenge toucannon

  • A Choice Banded Set can work With Brave Bird / Rock Blast / Bullet Seed / Brick Break but what it has in better immediate power it lacks the ability to switch between moves and is easier to get stuck in unfavorable situations. It also doesn't pick up any notable KOes to warrant using it.
  • Multiple Swords Dance sets can be ran featuring either Life Orb or Flyinium Z and a choice between Rock Blast or Flame Charge to turn it into a Pseudo sweeping set. As with the Choice Band set, there aren't many Pokemon Physical wall Pokemon hit harder by +2 Brave Bird than just Life orb Boomburst. The fact also that a turn of set up is required (or two if running Flame Charge) make it more unreliable and getting off immediate hits.
  • Roost
  • Subsitute
  • Tailwind

**Normal Resists**: This includes Ghost, Rock, and Steel types like Regirock, Aggron, Probopass, and Sableye who can take a Boomburst quite easily. Without Boomburst as an option, Toucannon is weak and loses its KOing potential.

**Revenge Killers**: Toucannon's speed and typing leave it prone to being easily revenge killed by Pokemon like Lycanroc, Archeops, Jynx, or Magmortar.

**Electric Types**: They are a reliable way of checking Toucannon by revenge killing it but they are also a check to Toucannon second strongest move Brave Bird and can come in on a predicted Brave Bird. This includes Manetric, Togedamaru, and Oricorio-Pom Pom.

**Residual Damage**: Brave Bird recoil, getting burned/ toxic, rocks weakness etc

I think a Specs set should be mentioned in the OO too. It has the same special offense as Swellow who hits insanely hard with Boom Burst too. It also has Overheat and Sheer Force-Boosted Flash Cannon to get past Rock Types.

flash cannon over bullet seed also lets u 2hko sableye while still hitting all the rock types, i wouldn't only mention it on specs since it's a p decent option. similarly i don't see rock blast mentioned outside of SD when it is an option on LO mixed, albeit a more outclassed one than flash cannon. Also mention a physically biased mixed choice scarf set, it's still a wallbreaker and not a revenge killer but it's basically the fastest and strongest spammer of brave bird
===================

**Normal Resists**: This includes Ghost, Rock, and Steel types like Regirock, Aggron, Probopass, and Sableye who can take a Boomburst quite easily. Without Boomburst as an option, Toucannon is weak and loses its KOing potential. detail is lacking here. for example, regirock is a check but not a switchin since bullet seed is 2hkoing. sableye is also not a great switchin, aggron and probo are better examples for not being weak to bullet seed or overheat. we have quite a few more normal resists and they check toucannon in different ways depending on how they fare vs its coverage moves, so this oversimplification doesn't rly help

**Revenge Killers**: Toucannon's speed and typing leave it prone to being easily revenge killed by Pokemon like Lycanroc, Archeops, Jynx, or Magmortar. i would go slightly more in-depth here, at least mention that no revenge killers really switch into toucannon

**Electric Types**: They are a reliable way of checking Toucannon by revenge killing it but they are also a check to Toucannon second strongest move Brave Bird and can come in on a predicted Brave Bird. This includes Manetric, Togedamaru, and Oricorio-Pom Pom.

Can you explain these ones to me? I don't quite understand the first part and I fail to see why Rock Blast should seriously be considered or I don't see what it would hit.

Every time toucannon gets a kill, p much any offensive mon can revenge kill it fairly easily. If you ever want to preserve it, then random defensive blanket checks are going to be what you need considering the sheer magnitude of mons that revenge kill it. Meanwhile Rock Blast gets the OHKO on Archeops and OHKOs quite a few things without taking extra Brave Bird recoil. It's not good because Toucannon has much better coverage options, but it's worth mentioning and explaining that.

I thought about Archeops too, but Flash Cannon secures that KO and is more accurate. I mentioned how it kills Oricorio-Sensu and AV Mag on switch in so I hope thats fine.

  • Bullet seed is a good coverage move on Toucannon thanks to its ability Skill Link turning it into a base 125 power Grass move. This helps with specific Pokemon weak to Grass like Gastrodon, Lanturn, Carracosta and especially Golem and Regirock who are either OHKOed or two hit KOed on switch in. (is also able to break through both sturdy and focus sash, e.g. golem) (i'd remove gastrodon as boomburst already nukes it)
  • Like Bullet Seed, Overheat is for coverage, specifically against Steel Types such as Ferroseed or Togedamaru. (zard already said reword this)
Set Details
========
  • Toucannon is given Max SpA to maximize its poorer base SpA and to make Boomburst hit hard and easy to spam. Patching up its SpA also makes Toucannon a better Mixed attacker by hitting both Defenses equally hard. (also powers up overheat)
  • Toucannon is not invested into Atk because its massive base 120 Atk stat is enough to KO or dent SpDef Pokemon without it. (like?)
  • Life Orb is used to ensure Toucannon has immediate power and the ability to switch between moves in its move set to not be as easily forced out by walls. (life orb is used because it's running a mixed set)
(mention jolly golurk and ursaring by the way)
  • Skill Link is the most useful ability Toucannon has and it helps to boost Bullet Seed, making it the best option.
Usage Tips
========
  • Toucannon is hard to switch into thanks to its diverse move pool and mixed attacks, but prediction plays a big role in using it effectively. (especially because life orb wears it down)
  • Leading with Toucannon can be advantageous as it can put immediate pressure on the opposing player to possibly sack something to it. (why is this advantageous? what scenario would this be applicable in? I think you need to mention that it has a good lead match up versus a lot of stealth rock leads)
  • Works well against many common wall Pokemon like Weezing, Gastrodon, Carracosta, Qwilfish, Lanturn and Ferroseed. (it helps break bulkier pokemon thanks to its diverse mixed movepool)
  • After Toucannon weakens the opponents team, a hard hitter or set up sweeper it is paired with can finish off the game.
  • It is important to set Toucannon up with favorable match ups by double switching or pivoting into it, otherwise Toucannon will not be able get attacks off. (it's also important because it's frail and is worn down easily)
  • Do not feel too pressured to preserve Toucannon because it will usually only serve to either weaken or kill one or two Pokemon. (really? I'm pretty sure against bulkier teams it can threaten more than that)
Team Options
========
  • Toucannon works well with fast, strong hitters that can take advantage of its wallbreaking abilities. This includes Pokemon like Archeops, Magmortar, and Primeape who appreciate Toucannon getting rid of Pokemon like Gastrodon, Weezing, and Lanturn.
  • Primeape is particularly good because of its pivoting capabilities with U-Turn. (primeape also benefits from the wallbreaking potential that toucannon offers and allows it to clean later on)
  • Other pivoting Pokemon such as Lanturn, Mesprit, and Persian-A can also keep momentum and produce favorable match ups for Toucannon. (you fail to specifically mention that it benefits more from slow volt-turn here, which gets it in for free a lot of the time)
  • In the case you want to preserve Toucannon, Pokemon like Lanturn, Regirock, Qwilfish and Weezing can be used as all around good blanket checks to Pokemon coming in to revenge kill Toucannon. (like what, give a few examples of what revenges it)
  • Benefits a lot from hazards chipping at the opponent's pokemon, as it can force switches against teams relatively easily
  • Hazard support helps because it taking 1/4 from stealth rock each time it comes in really hinders its ability to wallbreak
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • An alternative 4th move on Toucannon over Bullet Seed would be Flash Cannon since it serves a similar purpose in hitting Rock types. With Sheer Force, Flash Cannon is capable of two hit KOing Sableye and reliably two hit KOes Regirock. Rock Blast can also be used as it reliably kills Oricorio-Sensu on switch in and is nice for killing AV Magmortar without taking Brave Bird recoil. It is generally outclassed by Flash Cannon overall, however. (you mean they're both generally outclassed by bullet seed, right?) (i'd remove the bit about sensu, you're doing 91% minimum to it with brave bird anyways)
  • Choice Scarf Toucannon can be used to allow Toucannon to do more towards Offensive teams. A physically biased Brave Bird is very strong coming off of Toucannon and can do serious damage with a Boomburst in the set to hit physically Defensive walls. The downside is that it is still outsped by many other boosted Pokemon and Choice Scarfers and its main attack Brave Bird wears it down quickly. (would you really use boomburst on a choice scarf set without investment, seems weird to me) (also brave bird wears it down regardless of the set)
(it's so easily abused and doesn't have the mixed coverage that it wants, is why you don't use it)
  • Multiple Swords Dance sets can be ran featuring either Life Orb or Flyinium Z and a choice between Rock Blast or Flame Charge to turn it into a Pseudo sweeping set. As with the Choice Band set, there aren't many Pokemon Physical wall Pokemon hit harder by +2 Brave Bird rather than just Life orb Boomburst. The fact also that a turn of set up is required (or two if running Flame Charge) making it more unreliable at getting off immediate hits.
  • A Choice Specs set makes Toucannon similar to its cousin Swellow who also runs a Choice Specs Boomburst. This set runs Boomburst and Overheat and can even run Sheer Force boosted Flash Cannon to hit Rock types like Regirock harder. The last move slot would most likely be U-Turn since the only thing left in Toucannon's special move pool are the Hidden Powers which are generally going to be weaker than Boomburst and Flash Cannon.
  • Roost and Substitute can be used to give Toucannon more sustainability and another tool to fight Stall's status condition spam. Outside of Stall, however, using a slot for Roost and/or Substitute limits Toucannon's coverage and it is generally too slow to fully utilize Roost and Substitute.
  • Much like Flame Charge, Tailwind can be added on to a set to give Toucannon a better chance of threatening more Pokemon and is a nice support option for the rest of the team. The downside is sacrificing coverage.
===================

**Rock Types**: This includes Pokemon like Regirock and Probopass who can take a Boomburst quite easily, stomach a Bullet Seed and threaten Toucannon in return. Without Boomburst as an option, Toucannon is much weaker and loses its KOing potential. (last bit seems redundant)

**Revenge Killers**: Toucannon's speed and typing leave it prone to being easily revenge killed by Pokemon like Lycanroc, Archeops, Jynx, or Magmortar. These will find it almost impossible to safely switch in on Toucannon however. (that's kinda the point of a revenge killer, to not directly switch in)

**Ghost Types**: As they are immune to Boomburst, Ghost Types assure that Toucannon is not always safe to spam Boomburst as they can potentially switch into it every time. Notable examples are Oricorio-Sensu, Golurk, and Silvally-Ghost who all can threaten Toucannon once in. While these Pokemon are not completely safe from Toucannon's other coverage, the check comes from making Toucannon think twice about using Boomburst. (you fail to mention sableye, which basically beats toucannon thanks to will-o-wisp)

**Electric Types**: They are a reliable way of checking Toucannon by revenge killing it but they are also a check to Toucannon second strongest move Brave Bird and can come in on a predicted Brave Bird. This includes Manetric, Togedamaru, and Oricorio-Pom Pom. (i'd also mention assault vest eelektross too)

**Type: Null, Munchlax and Bronzor**: leave this bit for now but I want to talk to the other QC members about adding these three somehow, probably under specially defensive walls, because they do pretty much wall it
Looks good n_n! QC 2/3

I only put it there because Zard mentioned something about "a physically biased mixed choice scarf set, it's still a wallbreaker and not a revenge killer but it's basically the fastest and strongest spammer of brave bird" which I assumed would be putting Boomburst on the set.

In the OO, wouldn't it better to mention Heat Wave mentioned over Overheat on the Specs set? It is 6,5 points (with Sheer Force) weaker but you keep more offensive pressence unless Overheat gets some key KOes I am not aware of.

Toucannon fills a gap that is in all of our hearts and especially the PU meta, an Offensive Flying type. (Archeops is here, so no need for this sentence. Instead talk about what Toucannon's role in PU is (mixed attacker with good coverage options).)Besides Archeops, Toucannon is the strongest Physical bird in PU and one of the few that actually has access to Brave Bird. Its role in the meta game is being a strong wall breaker capable of running strong mixed sets to break through the bulkier Pokemon in the tier. Boomburst and Brave Bird make Toucannon a tough Pokemon to switch into on most teams due to their high base power and difference in type (Special v.s Physical). Despite Boomburst being a very powerful STAB move, Toucannon's Base Special Attack is very low and has trouble dealing with walls like Munchlax and Type: Null with their high SpDef and ability to take Brave Birds as well. Toucannon's lack of speed and bulk make is very underwhelming against Offensive teams and making it hard to get off attacks at all. Ultimately, it is prone to being revenge killed easily and worn down by Life Orb, Stealth Rocks, and Brave Bird recoil.

Moves
========

Boomburst is the strongest move in Toucannon's arsenal and is easily spammable because of its huge power. Boomburst also benefits from being a Special move as it hits physical walls that potentially come in on Toucannon very hard such as Weezing, Qwilfish, Musharna, Mesprit, and Clefairy. Brave Bird is Toucannon's strongest Flying STAB and hits anything Boomburst doesn't hit harder, this includes Ghost types like Oricorio-Sensu, Sableye and Audino. Brave Bird also rounds out Toucannon's role as a Mixed wallbreaker by being a Physical move. Bullet seed is a good coverage move on Toucannon thanks to its ability Skill Link turning it into a base 125 power Grass move. This helps with specific Pokemon weak to Grass like Lanturn, Carracosta and especially Golem and Regirock who are either OHKOed, even through Sturdy, or two hit KOed on switch in. Like Bullet Seed, Overheat is for coverage but for Steel Types such as Ferroseed or Togedamaru who would otherwise wall Toucannon.

Set Details
========

Toucannon is given Max SpA to maximize its poorer base SpA and to make Boomburst easily spammable and Overheat hit hard. Patching up its SpA also makes Toucannon a better Mixed attacker by hitting both Defenses equally hard. Toucannon is not invested into Atk because its massive base 120 Atk stat is enough to KO or dent bulky SpDef Pokemon without it. Life Orb is the most preferred item because running a Mixed set requires immediate power and the ability to switch between moves in its move set, which the Choice items prevent, so it isn't as easily forced out by Pokemon switching in. Rash is the optimal nature because Toucannon's speed is still enough to out speed max invested base 50 Spe Pokemon like Aggron, without sacrificing power. Naive can also be used to out speed Pokemon such as Jolly Golurk and Ursaring and speed tie with Pokemon such as Abomasnow and Pawniard. Since Toucannon is so slow, however, a max speed nature is not usually required to accomplish much. Skill Link is the most useful ability Toucannon has as it helps to boost Bullet Seed and Rock Blast making them into base 125 coverage moves. (Set isn't running Rock Blast, so no need to mention it here.)

Usage Tips
========

The role of Mixed wallbreaker gives Toucannon the ability to adapt to different Pokemon coming in on it and to have all the tools it needs to deal with them. This makes it hard to switch into, but prediction plays a big role in using it effectively because it can quickly be worn down in a game thanks to Life Orb and Stealth Rock. Leading with Toucannon can be advantageous against some lead hazard Pokemon like Qwilfish or Ferroseed as it can put immediate pressure on the opposing player to possibly sack something to it. Another job it has is to weaken bulkier Pokemon since there are very few resistances to its movepool. After Toucannon weakens the opponents team, a hard hitter or set up sweeper it is paired with can finish off the game. To achieve this goal, It is important to set Toucannon up with favorable match ups by double switching or pivoting into it, otherwise Toucannon will not be able get attacks off due to its frailty and low speed. Do not feel too pressured to preserve Toucannon because it loses its usefulness late game as opposing players slower Pokemon are more likely to be gone leaving Toucannon limited in what it can do.

Team Options
========

Toucannon works well with fast, strong hitters that can take advantage of its wallbreaking abilities. This includes Pokemon like Archeops, Magmortar, and Primeape who appreciate Toucannon getting rid of Pokemon like Gastrodon, Weezing, and Lanturn. Primeape is particularly good because of its pivoting capabilities with U-Turn and benefits from Toucannon's potential to severely weaken an opposing team giving it a good chance at sweeping late game. Other pivoting Pokemon such as Lanturn, Mesprit, and Persian-A can also keep momentum and produce favorable match ups for Toucannon. Lanturn and Mesprit's slow pivots make it especially easier for Toucannon to safely come in as it results in Toucannon taking no damage. In the case you want to preserve Toucannon, Pokemon like Lanturn, Regirock, Qwilfish and Weezing can be used as all around good blanket checks to Pokemon coming in to revenge kill Toucannon such as Archeops and Raichu, while at the same time possibly contributing hazards to make Toucannon's job a bit easier against bulkier Pokemon by limiting switch ins. Toucannon naturally appreciates a Pokemon to remove hazards, such as Skuntank, because of how fast and easy it is to wear Toucannon down with repeated Stealth Rock switch ins on top of recoil from Life Orb and Brave Bird. Skuntank can also deal with Ghost-types so Toucannon can spam Boomburst more freely.

Other Options
=============

While being its most unique and viable set, Toucannon's Mixed set can be altered or changed to suit a different role on a team or for more surprise factors. One slight change that can be made is using an alternative 4th move on Toucannon by changing Bullet Seed to Flash Cannon since it serves a similar purpose in hitting Rock types. Its ability would also be changed to Sheer Force as it better complements the new move, along with boosting Heat Wave as it can replace Overheat with the benefit of not dropping SpAtk but being weaker. With Sheer Force, Flash Cannon is capable of two hit KOing Physically Defensive Sableye and reliably two hit KOes Regirock. Rock Blast can also be used in the 4th move slot as it gives a different coverage option against Flying Types like Archeops. Both are generally outclassed by Bullet Seed, while Rock Blast is outclassed by even Flash Cannon. Choice Scarf Toucannon can be used to allow Toucannon to do more towards Offensive teams. A physically biased Brave Bird is very strong coming off of Toucannon and can do serious damage with a Boomburst in the set to hit physically Defensive walls. The downside is that it is still outsped by many other boosted Pokemon and Choice Scarfers and its main spamming attack, Brave Bird, wears it down quicker than normal. A Choice Banded Set can work With Brave Bird / Rock Blast / Bullet Seed / Brick Break but what it has in better immediate power it lacks the ability to switch between moves and is easier to get stuck in unfavorable situations. (maybe replace Rock Blast with U-Turn as the only Flying-type switching into physical would be Defensive Oricorio-Electric and momentum is nice to have.) It can be easily taken advantage of and retains none of the mixed coverage that Toucannon would want, making it less viable. Multiple Swords Dance sets can be ran featuring either Life Orb or Flyinium Z, making Toucannon into more of a hard wallbreaker by boosting its huge Atk stat, and a choice between Rock Blast or Flame Charge, turning it into a Pseudo sweeping set. A Choice Specs set makes Toucannon similar to its cousin Swellow who also runs a Choice Specs Boomburst. This set runs Boomburst and Overheat and Sheer Force boosted Flash Cannon to hit Rock types like Regirock harder. (Heat Wave would be better here since it gets Sheer Force boost and doesn't lower Special Attack so you can opt to stay in if need be.) The last move slot would most likely be U-Turn since the only thing left in Toucannon's special move pool are the Hidden Powers which are generally going to be weaker than Boomburst and Flash Cannon. Roost and Substitute can be used to give Toucannon more sustainability and another tool to fight Stall's status condition spam. Outside of Stall, however, using a slot for Roost and/or Substitute limits Toucannon's coverage and it is generally too slow to fully utilize Roost and Substitute. I mean I thought it was inherent of Revenge Killers to be relatively fast so they could effectively do their job. I would argue then that Revenge Killer inherently implies "Faster Attackers."

Lanturn and Mesprit's slow pivots pivoting moves especially make it especially easier for Toucannon to safely come in as it results in Toucannon taking no damage. In the case you want to preserve Toucannon, Pokemon like Lanturn, Regirock, and Weezing can be used as all-around (AH) good blanket checks to Pokemon coming in to revenge kill Toucannon, (AC) such as Archeops and Alolan Raichu, while at the same time contributing entry hazards to make Toucannon's job a bit easier against bulkier Pokemon such as Type: Null and Musharna by limiting switch ins switches. Toucannon naturally appreciates a Pokemon to remove hazards, such as Skuntank, because of how fast and easy it is to wear Toucannon down with repeated switches into Stealth Rock switch ins on top of recoil from Life Orb and Brave Bird. On top of hazard removal, Skuntank also provides Pursuit support, (AC) which can free Toucannon of the worry of Ghost-type switch-ins to Boomburst, making it more spammable.

While being its most unique and viable set, Toucannon's mixed set can be altered or changed to suit a different role on a team or for more surprise factors. One slight change that can be made is using an alternative 4th fourth move on Toucannon by changing Bullet Seed to Flash Cannon, (AC) since it serves a similar purpose in hitting Rock-types. Its ability would can then also be changed to Sheer Force, (AC) as it better complements the new move, along with boosting Heat Wave as it can Flash Cannon and allows Toucannon to replace Overheat with Heat Wave, which comes with the benefit of not dropping Special Attack but being is weaker overall. With Sheer Force, Flash Cannon is capable of two hit KOing 2HKOing physically defensive Sableye and reliably two hit KOes 2HKOes Regirock. Rock Blast can also be used in the 4th fourth move slot as because it gives a different coverage option against Flying-types like Archeops. Both are generally outclassed by Bullet Seed, however, while Rock Blast is outclassed by even Flash Cannon. A Choice Scarf Toucannon set can be used to allow Toucannon to do more towards offensive teams. A physically biased Brave Bird is very strong coming off of Toucannon's invested Attack stat and can do serious damage, while Boomburst can be added in the set to hit physically bulky walls. The downside is that it is still outsped by many other boosted Pokemon and Choice Scarf users and that its main spamming attack, Brave Bird, wears it down quickly. A Choice Banded Set can work with Brave Bird / U-turn / Bullet Seed / Brick Break, (AC) but what it has in immediate power, it lacks the ability to switch between moves, (AC) and it is easier to get stuck in unfavorable situations. U-turn does help with this weakness as it can easily provide slow U-turn momentum. All in all, however, it can be easily taken advantage of and retains none of the mixed coverage that Toucannon would want, making it less viable. Multiple Swords Dance sets can be ran run featuring either Life Orb or Flyinium Z, making Toucannon into more of a hard wallbreaker by boosting its huge Attack stat, and a choice between Rock Blast or Flame Charge, turning it into a pseudo-sweeping (AH) set. The fact that a turn of set up setup is required (or two if running Flame Charge) makes it more unreliable at getting off hits, though, as it Toucannon can't take hits well to begin with. A Choice Specs set makes Toucannon similar to Swellow in higher tiers, which also runs a Choice Specs Boomburst set. This set runs Boomburst, (AC) and Sheer Force-boosted (AH) Flash Cannon (RC) to hit Rock-types like Regirock harder, and Heat Wave (RC) to hit Steel-types. (AH) The last move slot would most likely be U-turn, (AC) since the only other thing left in Toucannon's special move pool are the movepool is Hidden Powers Power, which are is most often going to be weaker than Boomburst and Flash Cannon. Roost and Substitute can be used to give Toucannon more sustainability and another tool to fight stall's status condition spam. Outside of stall, however, using a slot for Roost and/or Substitute limits Toucannon's coverage, (AC) and it is generally too slow to fully utilize Roost and Substitute. Much like Flame Charge, Tailwind can be added on to a set to give Toucannon a better chance of threatening more Pokemon and is as well as provide a nice support option for the rest of the team. The downside is sacrificing coverage.

(this is massive, are you sure everything is viable enough to be worth mentioning?)

Checks and Counters
===================

**Rock-types**: Rock-type Pokemon like Regirock and Probopass can take a Boomburst quite easily, stomach a Bullet Seed, (AC) and threaten Toucannon with strong Rock STAB moves.

**Revenge Killers**: Toucannon's speed and typing leave it prone to being easily revenge killed by Pokemon like Lycanroc, Archeops, Jynx, or and Magmortar. However, these Pokemon will find it almost impossible to safely switch in on Toucannon.

**Ghost-types**: Ghost-types assure that Toucannon is not always free to spam Boomburst, (AC) as they can potentially switch into it. Common threats are Oricorio-G, Spiritomb, (AC) and Silvally-Ghost.

Common threats include Eelektross, Togedamaru, and Oricorio-Pom Pom Oricorio-E.

GP 2/2
[OVERVIEW]

Toucannon fills a rare niche in the PU metagame, as an offensive Flying-type. Besides Archeops, Toucannon is the strongest physical Flying-type in PU and one of the few that have access to Brave Bird. Its role in the metagame is being a strong wall(remove space)breaker capable of running strong mixed sets to break through bulkier Pokemon with help from its diverse coverage options. Overall, Toucannon is also prone to being revenge killed easily and worn down by Life Orb, Stealth Rock, and Brave Bird recoil.

Moves
========

Boomburst is Toucannon's strongest move and is easily spammable because of its huge Base Power. Boomburst also benefits from being a special move, as it hits physical walls such as Weezing, Musharna, Mesprit, and Clefairy, which can potentially switch in on Toucannon otherwise. Brave Bird is Toucannon's strongest Flying STAB move and hits anything Boomburst doesn't hit harder, which includes Pokemon with high Special Defense stats such as Audino and Ghost-types like Oricorio-G and Sableye. Brave Bird also rounds out Toucannon's role as a mixed wallbreaker by letting it inflict physical damage. Bullet sSeed is a good coverage move on Toucannon thanks to its ability Skill Link turning it into a 125-Base Power Grass-type move. This helps with specific Pokemon that are weak to Grass like Lanturn, Carracosta, and especially Golem and Regirock, which are either OHKOed or 2HKOed on the switch in. Overheat is for covering Steel-types such as Ferroseed and Togedamaru, which would otherwise wall Toucannon.

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Attack investment maximizes Toucannon's poor base Special Attack stat, making Boomburst easily spammable and letting Overheat hit hard.

Usage Tips
========

Another job Toucannon has is to weaken bulkier Pokemon, since very few Pokemon resist its movepoolcoverage.

========

On top of hazard removal, Skuntank also provides Pursuit support, which can free Toucannon of the worry of Ghost-type switch-ins to Boomburst, making it more spammable.
