Tropius (NU Analysis)

Disaster Area

formerly Piexplode
[Overview]
- Checks Hitmonchan with Flying sub-typing
- Can run SunnyBeam, and has Chlorophyll
- Can boost with Growth or Phaze checks to rack up Spikes Damage

[SET]
name: Going Through A Sunny Phaze, Though I Might Grow Up Instead.
move 1: Sunny Day
move 2: Solar Beam
move 3: Hidden Power Fire
move 4: Whirlwind / Growth
item: Leftovers
nature: Modest
evs: 156 HP / 252 SpA / 100 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
- SunnyBeam and HP Fire are standard on SunnyBeamers
- Whirlwind and Growth are what sets it apart from the competition (namely Bellossom and Tangela), alongside its great bulk and slightly varied typing. Whirlwind allows it to rack up Spikes damage alongside playing a threatening role as a SunnyBeamer, whilst Growth allows it to boost quickly, becoming an extra powerful threat. Tangela also has access to this, so you'd better be sure it's worth trading a great Vigoroth check with extra variety, for an improved Hitmonchan check that has a large Ice weakness. Also, unlike Bellossom, it can hardly even check Huntail. Whirlwind also lets it scout the opposing team.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
- EVs maximise power, and allow it to outspeed the whole meta under sunlight. The remaining EVs are put into HP to improve overall bulk, as it already does stuff like avoid the OHKO by CB Hitmonchan's Rock Slide so there's not much need for a more complex spread.
- Synthesis can be run in the last slot to make it a really consistent CB Hitmonchan check. Wish support would benefit it too for a similar reason.
- Spikes support is fantastic if you run Whirlwind.

[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Hidden Power Flying
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Synthesis
item: Leftovers
nature: Adamant
evs: 156 HP / 252 Atk / 100 Spe
ivs: 30 SpA / 30 SpD / 30 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
- Swords Dance boosts its attack. Whilst its Base Attack is a somewhat lowly 68, it's bulky enough and has a good enough typing to make use of it.
- Hidden Power Flying is its strongest STAB, and combined with Earthquake it has perfect coverage.
- Synthesis in the last slot lets it make use of its fantastic typing and bulk to allow it to continue functioning as a defensive check to various threats consistently throughout the match, and to sustain itself as a sweeper.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
- The Speed EVs outspeed minimum Speed Dewgong, but 96 HP / 252 Atk / 160 Spe allows it to outspeed Neutral Spe Dewgong.
- A Normal-type attack such as Body Slam, Return, or Double Edge could optionally be run in the fourth slot, as a good move to hit general switchins, but since most Flying resists other than Electrics resist Normal type attacks too, it's somewhat a waste of a moveslot.
- A pinch berry could be run, such as Leichi or Salac, alongside Substitute or Endure, but Tropius' bulk is one of its main draws.
- Sunny Day could be run to double its Speed.

[Other Options]
- Leech Seed and Earthquake stand out in particular, and a SubSeed set could quite possibly work, but its Speed is just too poor outside of the sun, even with its impressive bulk, for it to be truly effective. Earthquake could function to create a mixed set, allowing it to hit the Fire and Poison types that often try to check it.
- A Choice Band set could work for some initial power, due to it being pretty slow, but it doesn't hit so hard as to really be effective.

[Checks and Counters]
- Torkoal is probably amongst the best as it can handle it reasonably well, whatever set it is.
- Ice attacks.
- The usual answers to SunnyBeamers (Fire types, particularly Flareon, as well as stuff like Poison types - the Swords Dance set bothers them)
- Generally physically bulky stuff makes good checks to it, although a lot of them are weak to one of its attack types.

-----------------

Whilst i'll never make a set name as good as Mega Rayquaza's SD/DD sets (Dance Dance Rayvolution) I am gonna hold onto second place!

-----------------

Arguably I put more thought into the set title than the rest of the analysis xd

Tropius @ Leftovers
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Hidden Power [Flying]
- Earthquake
- Synthesis

SD should still be a set just because of its monstrous bulk and actually really good coverage. 96 Speed outpaces min speed Dewgong, which means it has enough to just absolutely shit on defensive teams.
