Bug Catalog Entry #1 - Beautifly

My friend Ryan had once told me,"Bug-types are the absolute worst type ever! Fire. One shot them. Boom." In many aspects, I strongly disagree! I try to use these guys in unique ways (or the standard way). I would like to show him how versatile Bug-types can be and how incredible they can be if used correctly, but may require "shofu-like" experience.

#267 - Beautifly
Type: Bug/Flying
Base Stats:
HP 60
Atk 70
Def 50
Sp Atk 100
Sp Def 50
Spd 65

Overview:
This Bug sports an outstanding Sp Atk stat at a whopping 100, rivaling the Sp Atk of Arcanine, Accelgor, Blaziken, and Articuno. Sadly, that's about as far as it goes with this Hoenn Butterfree. Its pitiful Defenses and HP prevent it from switching in comfortably without a lucky prediction and even then, its Speed prevents it from going first and doing any heavy damage at all. As if it couldn't get any worse. It has an awful typing; Bug/Flying, having four 2x weaknesses and having a 4x weakness to Rock, meaning Stealth Rocks chop half of its HP right off the bat. Its 4x resistance to Grass and Fighting moves is a plus, along with it's immunity to Ground, but isn't quite enough to make it REALLY tank up the hits after entry hazards.

Moveset #1:Quiver Dance
Move 1: Quiver Dance
Move 2: Bug Buzz
Move 3: Giga Drain
Move 4: Shadow Ball/Aerial Ace/Hidden Power Rock/Psychic

Item: Focus Sash
Tier: NU
Nature: Timid/Modest
Ability: Swarm
EVs: 4 HP/252 Sp Atk/252 Spd

The main premise with this set is to set it out first on the inevitable entry hazards support and to get as many Quiver Dances as possible and try to sweep as many Pokemon as possible. Once brought down to the sash, the Swarm is activated and Bug Buzz is at full force and can be threatening (if not resisted). It can 2HKO Spiritomb and with a +1 boost OHKOes Musharna, Meganium, and other Bug-weak and specially defensive 'Walls.' Giga Drain is there to sap HP if the sash was broken and for super-effective damage against Rock types. The last slot is based on preference. Shadow Ball is there to beat Ghost types who would wall Bug Buzz and Giga Drain. Aerial Ace is for STAB (then use a Mild or Hasty nature). Psychic can be used to do some damage to Assault Vest Muk, although it's not quite powerful without a boost. Hidden Power Rock covers up the 3/5 of Beautifly's weaknesses. Watch out for priority moves that will beat Beautifly at the sash and it is highly recommended to switch it in without entry hazards, namely rocks.

Moveset #2: Choice Scarf Cleaner
Move 1: Bug Buzz
Move 2: Giga Drain/Energy Ball
Move 3: Shadow Ball
Move 4: Hidden Power Rock/Hidden Power Fighting/Hidden Power Fire

Item: Choice Scarf
Tier: NU
Nature: Modest/Timid
Ability: Swarm
EVs: 4 HP/252 Sp Atk/252 Spd

With the Choice Scarf, Beautifly can surprise many opponents with its 176 Speed with a Modest nature or a 192 Speed stat with a Timid nature. Its mediocre coverage can be handy at times, but should only be used to clean up already low Pokemon. It potentially could switch in on an Earthquake or resisted move in order to OHKO it, but it is safer to clean up instead. Once again, the combo of Stealth Rocks and a priority move could OHKO Beautifly. Hidden Power Fighting and Fire can be used to do super-effective damage against Steel-types, who would resist the other moves.

Team Options:
Beautifly struggles to find a spot on any NU team and even so, will hold them back. However, it can work decently with Steel/Rock-types like Probopass, Lairon, or Bastiodon.

Checks and Counters:
-Stealth Rocks
-Priority Moves
-Rock-types
-Steel-types
-Assault Vest Muk
-etc...

Um hello! A couple of things:

1. In order to write an analysis, you have to have reserve the Pokemon you want to write about (in this case, Beutifly). You can do so here.

2. This thread doesn't follow the proper format required in C&C. You can find the proper format here.

3. You've posted this in the NU subforum in Competitive Discussion and it got deleted/locked. If you're confused about where to post what, check out the Smogon Primer.

4. Since you're new to C&C this guide should help. You should also look through this thread and check out the log.

5. Most importantly, Beutifly/Mothim/Dustox/Butterfree/insertbutterflynotcalledvivillonhere are all outclassed by Vivillon because of Compound Eyes+Sleep Powder+Speed stat. There's no point in running this Pokemon over it.

If you need help, feel free to contact a Mentor.
