Hello everyone, Steven here. And today, I'm going to bring you guys an RMT that shows my take on Mega Heracross balance. Mega Heracross is a unique mega in that its niche is more involved in breaking stall and balanced teams, where most megas work to break down offense. I ended up going with a balanced build because I think it's the most consistent playstyle in the current metagame. In the end, I think that Mega Heracross has an amazing place in OU, but can be somewhat difficult to build with due to its weird speed tier.

The core that I decided to build around was Mega Heracross + Rotom-W. This core made a lot of sense to me because of the very obvious fact that Heracross struggles with flying types like Talonflame, Skarmory, and Mega Pinsir. In addition, Rotom-W helps to handle Azumarill, which is also a good switch in to Heracross. This wasn't too revolutionary, but I felt like it was a really solid place to start.

At this point I saw that the main core really struggled with certain things like offensive Mega Scizor, and I wanted a really solid secondary check to Talonflame since I had decided to build balance (the goal of my balance teams is generally to have two checks to every mon in the meta at least). This also gave me Stealth Rock and a more reliable way to handle things like Hoopa-U and Charizard-Y.

Sand offense! Sand offense made way too much sense with the rest of the build to not include it. It gave me the speed to handle offense, a good way to beat Lati@s for the rest of the team, and an excellent check/counter to Clefable. In addition, the common weaknesses that Sand Offense have (Breloom and Azumarill), are checked by Heracross and Rotom-W respectively.

Clefable is a great Pokémon that really just works as a blanket check to the majority of the metagame. I have solid answers to the main counters to it (Scizor, Excadrill), and this alleviates pressure on Garchomp to check every physical attacker. Also spreading paralysis is useful on a team with a slow wall breaker like Mega Heracross.

Heracross @
| Guts / Skill Link
Jolly | 48 HP/4 Def/236 Atk/220 Spe
Substitute
Close Combat
Pin Missile
Rock Blast

Mega Heracross is a really cool Pokémon in OU that actually has great defensive utility due to its unique typing in addition to being able to wall break. The EV spread is a bit unique, so here is the reasoning behind it. Jolly 220 speed allows Heracross to outspeed Jolly base 70s after mega evolution and base 80s before. Now, the HP stat is a Substitute number (aka subtract 1 then be divisible by 4), and the 4 Def EVs have this very useful characteristic:

With 4 Def EVs:

0 Atk Garchomp Dragon Tail vs. 48 HP / 4 Def Mega Heracross: 72-85 (23 - 27.1%)
(72, 73, 73, 75, 75, 76, 76, 78, 79, 79, 81, 81, 82, 82, 84, 85)

Without 4 Def EVs:

0 Atk Garchomp Dragon Tail vs. 48 HP / 0 Def Mega Heracross: 73-87 (23.3 - 27.7%)
(73, 73, 75, 76, 76, 78, 78, 79, 79, 81, 82, 82, 84, 84, 85, 87)

In order to break a Mega Heracross Substitute, 78 damage has to be dealt to it. with the 4 Defense EVs, it's a 7/16 chance to survive a Dragon Tail, whereas without it's only a 5/16 chance. That improves your odds by 12.5%, which is nice! In most situations you will outspeed Garchomp as well and can use this to scout for Toxic or Fire Blast.

Substitute is a great option in general on Mega Heracross, it allows you to block status and you can set up a Sub a lot more often that you'd think. This eases prediction and makes Heracross much more difficult to revenge since the common options (flying types) die to Rock Blast after breaking the sub. In addition, bulky grounds like Hippowdon really struggle to pressure Heracross, which can help to break walls for a late game Excadrill sweep. The combination of unique typing and stat distribution makes Heracross difficult to prepare for in teambuilding, and thus makes it an excellent candidate to fit onto teams.

Rotom-Wash @
| Levitate
Bold | 232 HP / 232 Def / 44 Spe
Hydro Pump
Volt Switch
Will-O-Wisp
Pain Split

This is a Rotom-Wash, I'm sure you've all seen it before. Its basic role on this team is to act as a really safe check/counter to flying types like Talonflame, Pinsir, and Skarmory. In addition, it is the team's main answer to Azumarill and sand Excadrill, which would be a gigantic problem otherwise. For this team I chose to run the 44 Speed set that outpaces Jolly Azumarill as it 6-0s at +6 otherwise. In general, I wait until I finish a team to decide 44 Speed or not, and this team definitely needed it. Rotom-W is also a great fit on this team as it can bait in things like Ferrothorn and Lati@s, which I have excellent answers to in Heracross and Tyranitar respectively.

Garchomp @
| Rough Skin
Jolly | 240 HP / 188 Def / 80 Spe
Stealth Rock
Earthquake
Dragon Tail
Fire Blast

Garchomp is an excellent answer to a lot of physical attackers in the tier, and does decently against other threats that the team doesn't like to handle like Charizard-Y. I chose to run Rocky Helmet + Rough Skin due to the fact that wearing down opposing bulky grounds (namely Landorus-T) can help to facilitate an Excadrill sweep. Stealth Rock and Earthquake are mandatory on a defensive Garchomp build. I considered running Dragon Claw > Dragon Tail, but the utility of shuffling is too hard to pass up sometimes. Fire Blast helps me to nail Skarmory and Ferrothorn, which the team doesn't particularly like facing at the moment. The Speed EVs allow me to outpace max speed Hoopa-U, which generally thinks it can come in and fire off a Banded or Specs hit against the team. I'm not entirely sure if the EV spread is optimal, so let me know if it can be improved!

Excadrill @
| Sand Rush
Adamant | 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 SpDef
Swords Dance
Earthquake
Iron Head
Rock Slide

So, this was the first time I've ever used Sand Rush Excadrill. I'm really impressed with how it performs late game on this team, since the rest of the team does an excellent job of wearing down its main checks and counters (Excadrill + Heracross is an amazing offensive core). I opted for Life Orb Swords Dance because I felt it would work well as a late game sweeper and I have really good answers to the main checks to it (Jolly Rush Drill, Breloom, Azumarill). Air Balloon can also be used here, which is pretty fun as well.

Tyranitar @
| Sand Stream
Jolly | 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 SpDef
Stone Edge
Pursuit
Superpower
Crunch

This is a Scarf Tyranitar....it acts as an emergency check to things that have gotten out of hand like Bisharp, and allows me to Pursuit trap the Lati@s for Heracross and Excadrill. It also acts as a really decent check to both forms of Charizard, which would otherwise be really annoying to the team. All in all, Tyranitar fills the roll it fills on most teams, Pursuiting things and getting crucial chip damage on stuff like Manectric. Most importantly, it sets up sand for Excadrill and can be a decent first switch in on Hoopa-U.

Clefable @
| Magic Guard
Calm | 252 HP/ 172 Def / 84 SpDef
Calm Mind
Moonblast
Softboiled
Thunder Wave

Clefable is one of the best blanket checks in the metagame. It acts as a great check for this team to: Lati@s, Weavile, Tornadus, Lopunny-Mega, Medicham, Rotom-W, etc. It helps to fill out the team into the kind of balance build that I wanted. The team definitely has a massive weakness to Gliscor, so I want to change this set to Ice Beam > Thunder Wave, but the utility that Thunder Wave provides is hard to pass up, so I will have to do some testing to see if it is still possible to check the threats I need to with Ice Beam coverage on this set. The EVs are standard and make sure you don't get 2hko-ed by Latios Psyshock ever. Fairy typing is absolutely amazing and is why Clefable has shot up to being one of the best in OU.

Gliscor:

I don't really have much on this team that can touch Gliscor. I may be forced to change to Ice Beam + Moonblast with no Thunder Wave Clefable

Mega-Alakazam:

Mega-Zam can Trace Sand Rush, outspeeds Tyranitar, and threatens Rotom-W and Heracross. The best way to deal with it is to Paralyze it, but it can potentially carry Substitute or Taunt, making this thing a nightmare to face.

Sub CM Keldeo:

Although not really common, I have to pivot a lot around this threat to beat it, while they can just switch once I get into an advantageous position.

Hawlucha:

Really uncommon, but difficult to play around.

This team is really fun and easy to use. It effectively highlights the potential of Mega Heracross and is a pretty good balanced team. I think that the main flaws of the team can be fixed, so I'm excited to hear all of your input! I hope you all enjoyed this RMT, and see you next time~

I'm still waiting for an RMT on the level of Chicago: The windy city.
Alas, this just doesn't measure up. It's ok tho goomy. You can't be expected to build legendary teams all the time.

Anyways this team is fairly good but I dont like the weakness to a few things. What i'm thinking of is Char-y, Serperior, Manaphy, and garde.
There's no real switch-ins, chomp can dtail, ttar can revenge, and clef can t-wave but everything can't switch in or can't do much back.
Serp you basically have to rely on heracross being healthy enough to take a +2 hp fire cuz its not uncommon for serp to carry taunt or sub, foiling any t-waves from clef.
Manaphy can easily energy ball rotom-w or psychic hera, water stab plows through the rest.
And the fairy resist on the team is exca so garde will be plowing through you.

There's no real way to close up these weaknesses without opening up new ones, but I can atleast offer some options :S
You can do Scarftran+latios > ttar+exca, which lets you check keldeo a little smoother, handle fairies better with a scarf flash cannon, and beat serp/char-y/mana cleaner too. You definitely lose out on a lot of speed and the offensive core with hera, but tbh hera can break all its checks on its own and latios+hera can work on beating clef down together. This also doesnt open you up to electrics or fires too much, and your bisharp check is intact with heracross (which i love the ev spread on btw, i'm using that from now on) Unfortunately we're still weak to zammer but that's not an easy hole to close D:

Another option would be to run sd defensive lando-t > garchomp to pressure heracross's checks even further, as even +2 uninvested stone edges will be dealing hefty chunks to opposing lando-t and skarms. You lose out on the utility of a fire move in general on the team, but heracross murders ferro, and because lando-t can check a lot of the same things rotom-w does as well, you can forego some defense on rotom-w to invest enough speed to outpace jolly mzor to wisp that, because swapping out bulky chomp opens up a hole there. Fast rotom-w is also more of a bitch that people think; being able to hydro trans and mamos before they try and lure you

Feel free to mess around with these edits, i like the team in general and i like mega heracross even more <3
I'll be expecting a windy city tier RMT next time :]

Nice team , but there is a few things I would edit one of them being that I make garchomp impish nature with 100 speed because otherwise I feel that you are losing to many defensive stats , also Id replace excadrill t-tar with scarf heatran and torn-t to give a mega gard check and also more momentum for heracross.
Hope this helped :)

I really like the idea of your team being centered around M-Heracross. Imo it doesn't get enough love. My only recommendation is to switch your EV spread on your Rotom to a more specially defensive spread. This allows it to take on specs Keldeo much more effectively.

Hi goomy, I met your team thrice, and I founded pretty great : heracross is very underrated!

Since u can trap kill or RK hoopa, I think you could try this chomp spread : 248HP 168DEF 76spDef 16speed. With this spread you avoid 2HKO from modest zardY fireblast under sun, which is awesome since you have no real switch in to it. You can therefore preserve tyranitar or play mindgames with focus blast. The fast spread is less and less useful since everybody carries something else checking breloom and bisharp (in your case heracross). This spread also allows chomp to avoid 2HKO from gengar, which is deadly against ur tea since u have no real switchin.
I hope I helped, and good luck with your future RMTs :)
