Media Favorite Albums By Year

Okay, this was a little exercise that I was doing earlier, and I'd like to see everyone else's lists.

Here, you should list your favorite album from each year 1965 and on (when the album really became a big deal). You can start later or earlier if you want. It's a fun little exercise. Include description if you want (I'll be editing my post later to do so), but you don't have to.

1965: Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan

Believe it or not, this one is pretty tough. You have my the best album by Bob Dylan and the best album by The Beatles (Rubber Soul). Then to make things worse you have another great album by Bob Dylan (Bringing It All Back Home) and another great album by The Beatles (Help!). John Coltrane's A Love Supreme and Otis Redding's Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul aren't too shabby, either.

1966: Revolver - The Beatles

Revolver's a champ, but Bob Dylan's Blonde On Blonde is stiff competition. Oh, and friggin' The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds.

1967: The Who Sell Out - The Who

The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is absent, yes, but what I came closer to giving victory was The Velvet Underground And Nico.

1968: Electric Ladyland - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

A week year, but The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society along with the winner save it.

1969: The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground

Did I just give this the win over The Beatles' Abbey Road? You bet I did. Other contenders were Miles Davis's In A Silent Way, The Kinks' Arthur or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire, and The Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed.

1970: Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs - Derek And The Dominos
1971: John Prine - John Prine
1972: Exile On Main St - The Rolling Stones
1973: Quadrophenia - The Who
1974: Pretzel Logic - Steely Dan
1975: Blood On The Tracks - Bob Dylan

Wow john, I really love a lot of your picks, and I think your taste in muisc might be somewhat similar to mine (though as Morm said lack of maiden in the 80s makes me sad). I don't think I have the time/ambition/extensive music knowledge to make one of my own, but I will probably be checking out the albums on that your list that I haven't listen to yet.

WELL there's no chance in hell that i can possibly go as far back as 1965. tbh i didn't like much of the music that was released up until the mid 80s (granted, i wasn't alive, but still). i'll just start with 1985, i suppose.

fuck that took a while to think about! i have no idea how anyone can possibly even remember their favorite album from 1965 lol, especially when i don't think anyone on this webstie was alive then? anyway, my music taste seems, for the most part, DRASTICALLY different than anyone else who has posted in this thread so far. someone on the website has to have the same musical taste as me -.-

1989: Bad Religion - No Control (big words hehe)
1990: Blues Traveler - Blues Traveler
1991: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik (best album)
1992: Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
1993: Nirvana - In Utero (starts out really accessible and descends into noise)
1994: Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley (i wish there were 24 hours and 50 minutes in a day, and you were required to listen to this album every day in the extra 50 minutes)

1995: Green Day - Insomniac
1996: Electric Wizard - Come My Fanatics (Monolithic is the word)

2009: Pelican - What We All Come to Need
2010: The Division - Embrace (local band that I love)

Three Blues Traveler Albums. Those guys are great.

Someone just agreed with my 1995 pick? Whoa.

I'll be updating my honorable mentions over time for the heck of it. List I'm diggin' on the most is SSBM roy's.

On top of this, my 1999 shouldn't be The Soft Bulletin. I forgot all about 69 Love Songs.

Heh. I made a thread like this on another forum but it was only of the last decade...

And that's all I'm going to do because I only really started loving music like 2 years ago so I'm not exactly well versed in older stuff, I really don't know much from the 80's that I like beyond the fact that it's kind of funny, and anything before that would probably just be stuff like the Beatles and Bob Marley and the Wailers. Then the 90's come along and it's all Pop-punk and then Neutral Milk Hotel. :/

Anyway

2000: At the Drive-in / Relationship of Command
2001: Blink-182 / Take Off Your Pants and Jacket
2002: Tegan and Sara / If it Was You
2003: Cursive / The Ugly Organ
2004: Say Anything / ...is a Real Boy
2005: Architecture in Helsinki / In Case We Die (or) HORSE the Band / The Mechanical Hand
2006: Motion City Soundtrack / Commit this to Memory
2007: Enter Shikari / Take to the Skies
2008: The Age of Rockets / Hannah
2009: HORSE the Band / Desperate Living

and though technically the start of another decade...

2010: Snowing / I Could Do Whatever I Wanted if I Wanted

and honorable mentions because I neglected some albums I really, really didn't want to

2003: Gob / Foot in Mouth Disease
2004: Thursday / War All the Time
2005: Protest the Hero / Kezia
2006: Billy Talent / Billy Talent II
2007: Stars / In Our Bedroom After the War (or) MGMT / Oracular Spectacular
2008: Now, Now Every Children / Cars
2009: Say Anything / Say Anything

Even though the ones I actually picked for AOTY blow most of these out of the water. ;)

And for 2003 I'm kind of working on 'As the Roots Undo' by Circle Takes the Square, and I could see it becoming a favorite in time, same with 'Mongrel' from The Number 12 Looks Like You... but that's 2007 I think.

Also, for Greenday's Insomniac... I think that's the only Greenday album I don't remember any songs off of... *shame*

It's weird that Insomniac shows up and not my favorite of theirs, which is Warning:. Of course, 2000 was a decidedly stronger year than 1995, which is among the weakest I've ever seen.

1976 is a real stinker, though.

1967 - The Doors - The Doors
1968 - Giles, Giles, and Fripp - The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp
1969 - King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King

Starting at 1967 because it's the first year I have a release I really enjoy from. Nothing from '65, and only Freak Out! from '66 makes '67 my best starting point. '60's albums are few and far between for me, unfortunately.

1970 - King Crimson - Lizard
1971 - Comus - First Utterance
1972 - Yes - Close to the Edge, Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
1973 - Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
1974 - King Crimson - Red

The early 70's show my preference for prog. Dark Side for '73 feels so generic, but it's miles ahead of Camel's debut and Tubular Bells, though both are stellar.

1975 - Fripp & Eno - Evening Star
1976 - Rush - 2112
1977 - Pink Floyd - Animals
1979 - The Clash - London Calling

And the late 70's aren't my favorite. '78 ommitted for lack of anything interesting in my library from that year.

1980 - Rush - Permanent Waves
1981 - King Crimson - Discipline
1982 - King Crimson - Beat
1983 - Bacamarte - Depois do Fim
1984 - Rush - Grace Under Pressure
1985 - Jeff Wayne - Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds amd Violent Femmes - Hallowed Ground
1987 - Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse of Reason
1988 - Pixies - Surfer Rosa
1989 - Nirvana - Bleach

fuck the 80's. I'm going to look back on this text file in a few months and shudder at the inclusion of Jeff Wayne and Beat. Worst decade.

1990 - Pixies - Bossanova (the best Pixies album)
1991 - Slint - Spiderland
1992 - Morphine - Good
1993 - Morphine - Cure For Pain
1994 - Massive Attack - Protection
1995 - Radiohead - The Bends
1996 - Cake - Fashion Nugget and Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album
1997 - Morphine - Like Swimming, Daft Punk - Homework, and µ-Ziq - Lunatic Harness
1998 - Massive Attack - Mezzanine
1999 - Sigur Ros - Ágætis Byrjun

Music got its shit together for the 90's. '97 was interesting, and Morphine is tied with Cake for my favorite band of the 90's.

2000 - Morphine - The Night and At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
2001 - Cake - Comfort Eagle and The Faint - Danse Macabre
2002 - Aphex Twin - drukQs
2003 - The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium and God is an Astronaut - All is Violent, All is Bright
2004 - Arcade Fire - Funeral
2005 - MGMT - Clibming to New Lows

The first part of the last decade was pretty awesome.

2006 - Squarepusher - Hello Everything
2007 - Justice -
2008 - Ben Folds - Way to Normal
2009 - Say Anything - Say Anything
2010 - LCD Soundsystem - This is Happening and Arcade Fire - The Suburbs

and the last 5 years were decent.

1976 was a great year, what're you talking about

Ahah, Climbing to New Lows is fantastic, it really showcases a lot of MGMT's better (in my opinion) aspects, despite being a tad amateur. Didn't expect to see it on anyone's lists though.

1976 is a real stinker, though.
The Alan Parsons Project - Tales of Mystery & Imagination
Camel - Moonmadness
Gentle Giant - Interview
Jethro Tull - Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to Die!
Queen - A Day at the Races

What the fuck?
