[overview]
**Draft order**: 4th to 5th round

**Price range**: 10-12

**Overview**: Hatterene is a versatile Pokemon that can fill a number of roles on a team. Whether using Magic Bounce to help control entry hazards, using it high Special Attack and setup options to threaten opponents, or using its strong defensive profile to check opposing Pokemon Hatterene can always find value in a matchup. Even though it has many strengths Hatterene lacks reliable recovery moves and its abysmal speed mean it can be forced out quite easily and it can have difficulty staying healthy throughout the course of a game.

Common Roles
========
**Defensive Utility**: Using moves like Nuzzle, Psychic Noise, and the disruption its ability provides allows Hatterene to function as a strong utility Pokemon. It uses these moves and its reasonable bulk to get value throughout a game even though it may have trouble completely walling any particular Pokemon.

**Wallbreaker**: Using its great base Special Attack and items like Choice Specs or setup moves combined other damage boosting items Hatterene can punch holes in opposing teams.

**Tank**: Unlike defensive utility sets, tank sets aim to output damage rather than disrupt opponents. These sets are still defensive in nature unlike wallbreaking sets but tend to invest in defensive stats rather than attacking stats.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB moves**: Psychic, Psyshock, Psychic Noise, Stored Power, Draining Kiss, Dazzling Gleam

**Setup moves**: Calm Mind

**Utility moves**: Nuzzle, Thunder Wave, Substitute, Light Screen, Reflect, Trick, Pain Split

**Coverage**: Dark Pulse, Giga Drain, Mystical Fire, Shadow Ball, Tera Blast

Niche Moves
========
**Healing Wish**: Hatterene's low speed makes using Healing Wish harder than on faster Pokemon like Latias and Enamorus but it can be good at turning games late on when Hatterene is not as important as other Pokemon.

**Agility**: While Hatterene's Speed leaves much to be desired, combining Agility with Weakness Policy and Stored Power can allow Hatterene to outspeed enough of an opposing team to be a threatening sweeper.

Common Items
========
**Leftovers**: Hatterene enjoys being able to recover health like most mons and Leftovers is one of the few ways for Hatterene to recover health. When combined with Draining Kiss Leftovers can keep Hatterene healthy surprisingly well throughout a game.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: If Hatterene can not be on the field long enough to recover with Leftovers Heavy-Duty Boots are a good alternative, however Hatterene likes to be denying opposing entry hazards so there may be better options.

Niche Items
========
**Light Clay**: When setting screens with Hatterene Light Clay is always a viable item.

**Weakness Policy**: Hatterene can invest cleverly to live super-effective hits and get boost from Weakness Policy to become a threatening sweeper.

**Life Orb**: Since Hatterene's primary Fairy-type stab move is Draining Kiss, Life Orb can be an effective option as Hatterene can effectively heal off the recoil damage from Life Orb.

**Choice Specs**: Some matchups call for maximizing damage and Choice Specs allows you to do that. However Hatterene's STAB moves have common resistances and its coverage usually lacks power to break through man mons that wall its STAB moves.
Tera
========
Hatterene can make a good secondary Tera Captain for many teams. It can get a lot of value from flipping defensive matchups on opponents allowing it to setup on or wall them effectively. However it struggles as a main Tera threat. Combining Hatterene with another strong Tera Captain can make it difficult for opponents to prep for both effectively.

Draft Strategy
========
Hatterene more often than not is used as a utility Pokemon and can fit on to many teams. That being said it is important to pair it with teammates that can actually make use of its utility otherwise it can feel lackluster as it can struggle when forced to carry a large defensive or offensive load on a team.

**Entry Hazard Weak Pokemon**: Hatterene dissuades opponents from setting entry hazards and that can allow teammates like Kyurem or Chi-yu that would normally need to run Heavy-Duty Boots to run other items that boost their damage or longevity.

**Setup Sweepers**: Hatterene can be a reliable screen setter for setup sweepers like Blaziken and Gouging Fire and can use healing wish to give them another chance at glory late on in games.

**Slow Pivots**: Hatterene can struggle when forced to directly switch into attacks. Pokemon like Corviknight or Moltres than can take a hit and pivot Hatterene in make good partners.

Checks and Counters
========
**Skill Swap**: Hatterene make good use of Magic Bounce to avoid things like Toxic and deny entry hazards however there are a number of Pokemon that can use skill swap to circumvent this problem and it can leave Hatterene in a tough spot.

**Wallbreakers**: While Hatterene has reasonable defensive stats its low HP means that many strong wallbreakers can muscle through defensive sets especially if they have super-effective coverage for Hatterene.

**Entry Hazards**: Although in many games Hatterene can do a good job of denying entry hazards, Pokemon like Kleavor or Hisuian Samurott which can set hazards through Magic Bounce, or if entry hazards simple go up throughout a game Hatterene can get worn down easily if it is not running Heavy-Duty Boots.
