[OVERVIEW]
Magearna's Steel / Fairy typing is one of the best in the game, especially in 1v1. It grants Magearna great resistances for defensive purposes, allowing it to sponge hits from popular Dragon- and Fairy-type Pokemon. Magearna's typing is also great offensively, as it can hit opposing Fighting-, Fairy-, and Dragon-type Pokemon super effectively. Magearna also has stats that complement its typing, making it easier to survive hits and deal damage. Magearna is blessed with a powerful signature move in Fleur Cannon, which, when paired with Fairium Z, can OHKO a good portion of the metagame, and its movepool has other great options such as Calm Mind, Iron Defense, and plenty of coverage moves like Ice Beam and Energy Ball. However, its ability, Soul-Heart, is useless in the 1v1 metagame. Additionally, Magearna is weak to common Fire- and Ground-type attacks, which are some of the most popular in the metagame. It is also relatively slow, which means that it can lose to faster Pokemon that can deal a great amount of damage to or OHKO it before it sets up, such as Charizard, Excadrill, and Zygarde-C.

Moves
========
Fleur Cannon is Magearna's strongest STAB move, and it is all Magearna needs to nail important Pokemon. Iron Defense boosts Magearna's Defense, making it able to defeat physical attackers such as Mega Gyarados, Donphan, Golem, and Snorlax, which would otherwise easily OHKO or 2HKO it. Calm Mind boosts Magearna's Special Defense and Special Attack, which allows it to muscle through specially bulky Pokemon such as Mega Venusaur, Tapu Fini, and Porygon-Z after a Z-Conversion. Pain Split allows Magearna to chip away at the foe while avoiding the OHKO against Golem and Donphan after an Iron Defense. It also allows Magearna to replenish its health against Pokemon that are bulky enough to bring Magearna's health down such as Mega Metagross. It also helps Magearna defeat stall Pokemon such as Chansey.
Set Details
========
Fairium Z turns Fleur Cannon into a powerful Twinkle Tackle, which allows it to fire off a powerful attack without the Special Attack drop. 212 Speed EVs allow Magearna to outspeed Donphan, while the HP EVs and a Bold nature allow Magearna to survive a Tectonic Rage followed by Earthquake from Golem and Donphan after an Iron Defense boost. 48 Special Defense EV's Magearna to take Choice Specs Naganadel's Fire Blast.
Usage Tips
========
Use Magearna to defeat bulky offensive Pokemon that do not carry super effective moves that can OHKO it, such as Mega Mawile, Snorlax, and most Sturdy users, including Golem, Donphan, and Crustle. However, avoid sending Magearna out against faster Fire- and Ground-type Pokemon such as Charizard, Excadrill, and Landorus. The correct way to use Magearna depends on the foe; for example, if Magearna is up against a Donphan, Golem, Crustle, or Sawk, it must use Iron Defense, Pain Split, and Twinkle Tackle, in that order. This move sequence allows Magearna to tank at least two hits and recover its health in order to survive another hit. Simultaneously, Magearna breaks Sturdy, which allows it to finish off the foe with Twinkle Tackle. Against foes that are weak to Fairy-type moves, Magearna should use Twinkle Tackle first in order to not waste time, unless you are up against Dragonite. In this case, Magearna must use Iron Defense and then Pain Split to break Multiscale and heal off the damage; then, Magearna must use Twinkle Tackle to OHKO Dragonite and win the matchup. However, be wary that Choice Band Dragonite can easily defeat Magearna. Additionally, Magearna should only use Calm Mind against Pokemon that are either specially offensive or defensive such as Mega Venusaur and Porygon-Z.
Team Options
========
Magearna's main drawback is that Ground- and Fire-type Pokemon such as Zygarde-C, Garchomp, and Charizard can easily defeat it, which means that bulky Water-type Pokemon like Primarina and Mega Gyarados are generally appreciated teammates. In addition, some stall tactics such as Substitute + Leech Seed from Jumpluff and PP stalling from Deoxys-S defeat Magearna, so having Pokemon that beat them such as Hoopa-U and Buginium Z Crustle with Rock Blast is a good option. Furthermore, some Steel-types such as Metal Sound Aegislash and Magnezone give Magearna trouble, especially if they use stat-lowering moves, making Mega Charizard X a great partner for Magearna.

Other Options
=============
A Choice Specs set with Fleur Cannon / Flash Cannon / Energy Ball / Hidden Power Fire gives Magearna a better matchup against some Pokemon the given set doesn't beat or rarely beats, such as Genesect, Mega Scizor, and Mega Swampert, but Magearna then misses out on beating a lot of threats such as Golem and Donphan. Magearna can also utilize two other sets to lure in and beat Ground-types; the first is an Air Balloon set with an EV spread of 232 HP / 240 SpA / 26 SpD and a Modest nature, while the second is a Shuca Berry set with an EV spread of 100 HP / 132 Def / 60 SpA / 216 and a Modest nature. The Air Balloon set's EVs allow Magearna to hit harder and secure more OHKOs than the Shuca Berry set, such as against Gyarados with Thunderbolt and Naganadel with Fleur Cannon, but this set mandates the use of Magnet Rise. On the other hand, the Shuca Berry set's defensive investment lets Magearna hits, and the set doesn't require Magearna to run Magnet Rise, but it doesn't hit as hard. Ice Beam is mandatory on both sets.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Faster Ground- and Fire-type Pokemon**: Faster Ground- and Fire-type Pokemon such as Charizard, Heatran, and Zygarde-C can easily OHKO Magearna with a STAB move before it can set up Iron Defense or Calm Mind.
**Steel-type Pokemon with Stat-lowering Moves**: Some Steel-type Pokemon such as Magnezone and Aegislash resists Magearna's attacks and can utilize Metal Sound to drop Magearna's Special Defense and OHKO it with Gigavolt Havoc or Never-Ending Nightmare respectively. Some other Steel-types can beat it if they run specific moves such as Mega Metagross with Laser Focus.
**Deoxys-S, Jumpluff, and Mimikyu**: All of these Pokemon run a stall strategy that can beat Magearna. Deoxys-S utilizes Amnesia PP stall, which allows it to survive a Twinkle Tackle. Jumpluff beats Magearna with Sleep Powder and Leech Seed, as Magearna doesn't have a way to recover HP after Jumpluff sets up a Substitute. Curse Mimikyu also beats Magearna, as it chips away Magearna's health while behind a Substitute.
