Mawile

[OVERVIEW]
Mawile is a unique Pokemon in NU, as it has a great ability in Sheer Force boosting the power of both its STAB moves and its coverage moves. Mawile is a great wallbreaker, able to lure in and break down walls for other teammates to sweep, and it can be a pain for defensive teams to handle because of its inability to be worn down by Life Orb recoil and its powerful STAB moves and coverage allowing it to easily break past defensive cores. However, Mawile is slow and frail, meaning it has to rely on Sucker Punch against offensive teams, and its poor bulk means that even resisted hits can do asignificant amount of damage, preventing Mawile from utilizing its resistances, most of which areof specially based attacking types. It also faces competition from other wallbreakers such as Samurott and Magmortar, which can provide more defensive utility to a team with their better bulk or defensive typings.

Moves
========

Play Rough is quite powerful after the boost from Sheer Force and Life Orb, having good neutral coverage in general and forcing out Pokemon like Hariyama and Liepard. Iron Head provides important coverage against Mega Audino and hits Rock-types such as Rhydon and Regirock. It also hits Poison-types like Garbodor fairly hard. Fire Blast is needed to 2HKO Steelix, which would otherwise counter Mawile entirely, and also hits Steel-types like Ferroseed and Klinklang as well as Vileplume and Gourgeist-XL hard. Sucker Punch is Mawile's best move against offensive teams, as it can pick off weakened threats like Swellow with its priority.

Set Details
========

Maximum investment in Attack and Speed maximizes Mawile's offensive potential. The remaining EVs are put into Special Attack with a Naughty nature to keep Fire Blast decently powerful. Sheer Force is chosen over Intimidate to negate Life Orb recoil on moves with a secondary effect, which is all of Mawile's moves except Sucker Punch.

Usage Tips
========
Mawile should be used as a wallbreaker, breaking down walls with its coverage moves. Play Rough should be spammed unless the opponent has a Pokemon that resists it. Use Mawile's coverage moves in Iron Head and Fire Blast if the opponent has the appropriate target to these moves. Use Sucker Punch to pick off weakened threats, but use it carefully if the opponent has a Pokemon with Will-O-Wisp like Rotom. Mawile's poor special bulk means it is 2HKOed by even resisted special hits like Abomasnow's Blizzard, but its excellent defensive typing lets it be a one-time check to attackers like Swellow and offensive Mesprit. Mawile should still not switch into these Pokemon, as it is easily 2HKOed by their attacks. Its defensive typing and better physical bulk let it be a reliable switch-in to Dark-types like Malamar and Liepard, so try to get Mawile in by VoltTurn or after one of your Pokemon has fainted. Mawile is immune to Toxic and Poison-type moves, so try to switch it in on those. Try to scout special attackers like Vileplume to see if they have a Hidden Power type that can hit Mawile hard.

Team Options
========

Pokemon that can deal with Fire-types, such as Samurott, Floatzel, and Kabutops, make for good partners to Mawile. Floatzel can also provide Baton Pass, which is always useful for a slow wallbreaker like Mawile. Fast Pokemon that have a good matchup against offensive teams, such as Sceptile and Tauros, make for good partners as well due to Mawile's focus as a wallbreaker, letting it break down their bulkier checks or counters, such as Mega Audino. Sweepers such as Swords Dance Scyther and Vivillon appreciate Mawile's luring in and breaking down of some of their checks and counters, such as Steelix and Rhydon. Pokemon that have a problem with bulky Pokemon and walls in general, such as Scyther and Sceptile, appreciate Mawile's wallbreaking. Bulky Pokemon that can take the hits that Mawile can't take, mainly strong special hits like Blizzards and Fire Blasts, such as Mega Audino and Hariyama, are good partners as well. Pokemon that can bring in Mawile safely with Volt Switch or U-turn, like Scyther and Rotom, make for good partners. Mawile synergizes well with the VoltTurners by weakening or KOing their checks. Other examples of good VoltTurn users are U-turn Primeape, Baton Pass Musharna, and Lanturn.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A defensive Stealth Rock set is Mawile's most usable variation. With a great ability in Intimidate and a great defensive typing, Mawile could function as a defensive Pokemon with a moveset of Play Rough / Stealth Rock / Swords Dance / Baton Pass, but sadly, Steelix severely reduces this set's viability, as Steelix has better defenses and a better typing to wall other Pokemon. Swords Dance is an option on the offensive set over Iron Head, as a +2 Mawile is a very dangerous wallbreaker and can be dangerous to offensive teams as well thanks to Swords Dance boosting Sucker Punch's power. Stealth Rock is an option on the offensive set as well thanks to Mawile's ability to force switches, but it doesn't have room for the move and Mawile is usually better used wallbreaking than setting up. Grass Knot can also be used to OHKO Rhydon and Quagsire, but it has little use outside of that.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fire-types**: Fire-types resist Mawile's STAB moves and can usually take a Sucker Punch and OHKO Mawile with their STAB attacks. Charizard can even predict a Sucker Punch and Roost off the damage. Pyroar and Charizard can also circumvent Sucker Punch by using Will-O-Wisp and crippling Mawile. Combusken doesn't resist Play Rough, but it does resist Sucker Punch, making it an easy revenge killer to Mawile.

**Faster Pokemon**: Mawile has a low base 50 Speed, meaning almost all offensive Pokemon will outspeed and potentially KO it. Sucker Punch mitigates this problem somewhat, but it can only KO weakened Pokemon, leaving Mawile with a bad matchup against faster teams. Powerful special attackers and Pokemon that can resist or shrug off Sucker Punch or can circumvent it with status have an easier time revenge killing Mawile as well. Examples of these revenge killers include Rotom, Hitmonchan, and Primeape. Even offensive Pokemon like Magmortar and Samurott can outspeed Mawile and revenge kill it.

**Steel-types**: Steel-types resist both of Mawile's STAB moves, only fearing Fire Blast on the switch, and can retaliate with their STAB moves or coverage, making them reliable Mawile checks. Examples of these Steel-types include Steelix, Klinklang, and Ferroseed.

**Poison-types**: Poison-types resist Play Rough and can usually take an Iron Head and retaliate. Garbodor can whittle Mawile down with Rocky Helmet, Weezing can threaten with its Will-O-Wisp or Flamethrower, and Vileplume can cripple Mawile with Effect Spore and hurt Mawile badly with Hidden Power Fire.

**Bulky Ground-types**: Bulky Ground-types, like Golurk and Rhydon, can take a hit from Mawile and OHKO it with Earthquake or Earth Power. Rhydon and Piloswine run the risk of being 2HKOed by Iron Head, however. Steelix also deserves a mention, as it tanks every one of Mawile's STAB moves and forces it to run Fire Blast. However, none of these Ground-types want to switch into Mawile due to its powerful STAB moves and coverage, so they are shaky checks at best.

If Mawile is meant to be used as a wallbreaker, then teammates that would appreciate what it is used to break through should be mentioned. Scyther almost certainly appreciates Mawile putting pressure on Rock and Steel-type Pokemon, while being able to provide speedy pressure against faster threats, and Vivillon provides a wincon that can take advantage of its checks weakened as well.

Mention in the Overview that it has the strongest Fairy-type attack in the tier, especially after a boost. A strong Play Rough is basically your main reason to use Mawile over any other wallbreaker.

Mention in usage tips that Mawile can use its unique resistances to switch into certain physical attackers, such as Scyther and Garbodor, and it can switch into Toxic used by various things I guess. Also mention that it needs to be really careful around Will-O-Wisp, as Pokemon like Rotom that are normally vulnerable to Sucker Punch can just use Wisp and render Mawile complete fodder for a teammate. Weezing also beats Mawile this way provided you have something that can switch into a weak Fire Blast. Also scout things like Vileplume to see if they have Hidden Power Fire; if not, you can set up on them.

Swords Dance as a set definitely needs to be mentioned somewhere, even if just in OO. Iron Head + Play Rough + Fire Blast with Sheer Force is pretty hard to wall, while substituting Sucker Punch in there lets Mawile take care of faster threats that try to revenge kill it if you can already deal with Steelix. I get that this set has 4MSS but it's quite capable of sweeping/wallbreaking effectively when given support so this needs to be mentioned somewhere. Swords Dance + Intimidate is also somewhat viable as people usually assume it's the defensive set, so they give you opportunities to set up.

Defensive set is pretty mediocre but I would explain what it does in depth so that people can see why it's not the best, because a lot of people assume it's defensive if they haven't seen it before. Like Super Fang is an interesting niche over Steelix but in practise you can never secure kills with it. Also mention Stealth Rock on an offensive set somewhere in OO as Mawile usually forces switches as people assume it's a dedicated wallbreaker, similar to Kecleon and Pawniard I guess.

I'll wait for another QC member to look at this before stamping it.

[OVERVIEW]
  • Sheer Force along with Life Orb makes Mawile a strong attacker.
  • It's coverage moves can lure in many Pokemon and hit them for lots of damage.
  • Slow, making it priority-reliant against offense teams.
  • Very frail in both defenses, even resisted hits can do a number to it.
  • Faces competition from other wallbreakers, like Kecleon kecleon isn't very relevant at all, i'd rather you put something like lo samurott but honestly these aren't too comparable and Magmortar.
definitely mention its typing somewhere, it's really nice, and mention its competition with Steelix (and that Steelix forces it to run Fire Blast)

Moves

  • Play Rough is Mawile's main STAB move, dealing heavy damage to anything that doesn't resist it.
  • Iron Head provides important coverage against Fairy-types like Mega Audino, and also hits Rock-types like Rhydon.
  • Fire Blast hits Steel-types like Steelix for lots of damage, which is very important for Mawile, as they normally wall it otherwise.
  • Sucker Punch provides priority, allowing Mawile to pick off weakened threats.
  • Flash Cannon can be used over Iron Head to hit physical walls and Rhydon a bit harder, but it doesn't break through Mega Audino as easily, so it isn't recommended.
  • Grass Knot can be used to OHKO Rhydon and Quagsire, but it has little use outside of that.

Set Details
========

  • Max investment in Attack make Mawile as strong as possible in it's physically attacking moves. 252 EVs in Speed make Mawile as fast as he can be.
  • A Naughty Nature allows Mawile's special attacks to be decently strong while still providing power for it's physical attacking moves.
  • Sheer Force negates Life Orb recoil on all of Mawile's moves other than Sucker Punch, making them all quite strong.

Usage Tips
========

  • Mawile should be used as a wallbreaker, luring in and weakening bulky Pokemon for it's other teammates to clean.
  • Try to bring Mawile in after a teammate has been killed, or by Volt Switch or U-Turn.
  • Mawile's unique resistances allow it to swith into some physical attackers, such as Garbodor and Scyther, and it's Steel typing also lets it switch into Toxic.
  • Mawile needs to be careful around Will-O-Wisp users, as Pokemon that can get taken out by Sucker Punch like Rotom can use Will-O-Wisp and cripple Mawile.
  • You should scout things lile Vileplume to see if they have coverage moves like Hidden Power Fire, so you can bring Mawile on them safely.

Team Options
========

  • Pokemon that can deal with Fire-types, like Samurott, Mantine, and Poliwrath, are good partners.
  • Fast Pokemon, like Sceptile and Tauros, are good partners for Mawile as Mawile has a bad matchup against faster offense teams.
  • Bulky Pokemon that can take the hits that Mawile can't take, like Mega Audino and Hariyama, make for good partners.
  • Sweepers that appreciate the pressure Mawile puts on Rock and Steel-type Pokemon, like Scyther and Vivillon, make for good partners.
  • Pokemon that can bring in Mawile safely with Volt Switch or U-Turn, like Scyther, Pelipper, or Rotom, make for good partners.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • A Stealth Rock set may be appealing given Mawile's decent defensive typing and access to Intimidate, but Steelix eclipses this set with it's better bulk and typing. Super Fang does give it sort of a niche to cripple switchins, but it won't be kiling anything in practice.
  • Knock Off can be used to rid opposing Pokemon of their items, but it doesn't give very good coverage overall. I'd delete this one personally
  • Thunder Fang can be used on the wallbreaker set to hit Pelipper and Mantine hard, but Play Rough usually hits them hard enough and it doesn't give much coverage other than that. I'd delete this one personally
  • Stealth Rock on the offensive set is an option as Mawile ca use the number of switches it forces to set up Stealth Rock, but usually Mawile lacks the room for it.
  • Swords Dance is also an option as a +2 Mawile is very dangerous, even to offensive teams thanks to Sucker Punch, but since it can't run Fire Blast unless you take out a STAB move or Sucker Punch, it isn't too reliable overall unless you have significant support to defeat Steelix.
  • Swords Dance + Intimidate is a viable option as people will usually think it's the defensive set, giving Mawile more opportunities to set up. swords dance pass is a pretty major niche it has over Steelix, certainly more than Super Fang. I'd combine this and the first point and mention a SD Pass+Stealth Rock set with partners like Tauros. momentum from bp is also a nice niche
specially based attacker probably deserves a mention, maybe in set details, wait on others

Checks and Counters

**Fire-types**: Fire-types resist Mawile's dual STAB moves and can usually take a Sucker Punch and OHKO Mawile with their STAB attacks.
**Faster Pokemon**: Mawile has a low base 50 Speed, meaning almost all offensive Pokemon will outspeed it and potentially KO it. Sucker Punch mitigates this problem somewhat, but it can only kill weakened Pokemon.
**Bulky Ground-types**: Bulky Ground-types, like Golurk and Rhydon, can take a hit from Mawile and OHKO it with Earthquake or Earth Power. Rhydon and Piloswine run the risk of being 2HKOed by Iron Head, however. Steelix might be worth a mention since it's the thing forcing it to run fire blast
1/3

in overview i would mention how mawile's bonkers attack+coverage makes it a real pain for slower-paced teams and you pmuch 2hko everything (dino, lix, mantine, yadayada) cause its practically the only reason youd use mawile

in usage tips, reiterate that mawiles poor special bulk often leaves it 2hkod by powerful attacks, even resisted ones (ie cacturnes dpulse or abomas blizzard) however, make note it can often act as a one-time offensive check to common attackers such as shiftry or abomasnow thanks to mawiles excellent defensive typing (ergo resistences)

i would add a specially attackers section to c&c, including stuff like samurott, aurorus, etc

qc 2/3 when implemented

[OVERVIEW]
Mawile is a unique Pokemon in NU, as it has good offensive stats backed up by a great ability in Sheer Force, as well as a great defensive typing to back it up. It has a lot of coverage in it's STAB moves and moves like Sucker Punch to threaten offensive teams, and it also makes Mawile a pain for defensive teams to handle. Mawile is slow and frail though, meaning it has to rely on Sucker Punch against offensive teams, and it's poor bulk means that even resisted hits can do a number to it. It also faces competition from Steelix in a defensive role, and Steelix's omnipresence forces Mawile to run Fire Blast in order to not get countered by it. It also faces competition from other wallbreakers such as Samurott and Magmortar, who can provide more defensive utility to a team with their better bulk or typings.
- Mawile doesn't have good offensive stats lol; it's more to do with Sheer Force's power boost combined with Mawile' dual STAB which can threaten most bulky Pokemon in the tier.
- Emphasize Mawile's Sheer Force boosted attacks and inability to be worn down by Life Orb as big factors on how it threatens defensive teams.
- Emphasize that Mawile's poor special bulk prevents it from making good use of some of its resistances, such as Ice, Grass, and Psychic.
- While Steelix is the primary reason Mawile would want Fire Blast, it's not the only reason, so I'd remove this point honestly.
- Meanwhile I'd mention that Mawile's overall average stats can limit its potential and effectiveness.

Moves

Play Rough is Mawile's main STAB move, and is quite powerful after the boost from Sheer Force and Life Orb, dealing heavy damage to anything that doesn't resist it. Iron Head provides important coverage against Fairy-types like Mega Audino and hits Rock types such as Rhydon and Regirock. Fire Blast is needed to 2HKO Steelix, who would otherwise counter Mawile entirely, and it also hits Grass-types like Vileplume. Sucker Punch is Mawile's best move against offensive teams, as it can pick off weakened threats with it's priority. Flash Cannon can be used over Iron Head to hit physical walls like Rhydon a bit harder, but it can't break through Mega Audino as easily, so it is not recommended. Grass Knot can also be used to OHKO Rhydon and Quagsire, but it has little use outside of that.
- Note on Iron Head's perfect accuracy compared to Play Rough's, as well as its ability to do good damage to most Poison-types that would resist Play Rough
- Mention Steel-types in general, like Klinklang and Ferroseed. Also remove 'Grass-types' since Mawile can maim every other Grass-type in the tier with its STABs anyway, and just specify Vileplume and Gourgeist-XL as targets.
- Remove Flash Cannon entirely; it hits Rhydon for a negligible 5% more damage than Iron Head and is actually weaker against Weezing's new EV spread, while being much weaker than all of Mawile's other moves against pretty much everything else.

Set Details
========

Maximum investment in Attack and Speed maximize Mawile's offensive potential. 4 Special Attack EVs and a Naughty Nature let Mawile still be physically strong but still lets Fire Blast be decently powerful. Sheer Force is chosen over Intimidate to negate Life Orb recoil on moves having a secondary effect, which is all of Mawile's moves except Sucker Punch, making them all quite strong, making Mawile a strong wallbreaker.
- Nitpicky, but I'd rephrase this to 'remaining EVs', as the way it is written here makes it seem like those EVs are a conscious investment.

Usage Tips
========
Mawile's poor special bulk lets it be 2HKOed by even resisted special hits like Abomasnow's Blizzard, but it's excellent defensive typing lets it be a one-time check to things like Cacturne. It's defensive typing and better physical bulk let it be a reliable switchin to Dark-types like Malamar and Liepard, so try to get Mawile in the battle on them, or by VoltTurn or a teammate being killed. It is also immune to Toxic and Poison-type moves, so try to switch it in on those. Mawile should be used as a wallbreaker, luring in and breaking down walls with it's coverage moves, Play Rough should be spammed unless the opponent has a resist to it. Use Mawile's coverage moves in Iron Head and Fire Blast if the opponent has the appropriate target to these moves. Use Sucker Punch to pick off weakened threats, but use it carefully if the opponent has a Pokemon with Will-O-Wisp like Rotom. Try to scout Pokemon like Vileplume to see if they have a Hidden Power that can hit Mawile hard.
- Replace Cacturne with Shiftry. You may also add Mesprit and Musharna to that list as well.
- You may also specify a list of Pokemon which Mawile can start threatening; the aforementioned Pokemon + Hariyama and etc. are examples you can use.

Team Options
========

Pokemon that can deal with Fire-types, such as Samurott, Mantine, or Poliwrath, make for good partners to Mawile. Fast Pokemon that have a good matchup against offensive teams, such as Sceptile and Tauros, make for good partners as well due to Mawile having a bad matchup against those types of teams. Sweepers like Swords Dance Scyther and Vivillon appreciate Mawile's luring in and breaking down of some of their checks and counters, so they are good partners as well. Bulky Pokemon that can take the hits that Mawile can't take, such as Mega Audino and Hariyama, are good partners as well. Pokemon that can bring in Mawile safely by Volt Switch or U-Turn, like Scyther or Rotom make for good partners.
- You could probably place a bit more importance on VoltTurn support, as it is a fantastic way to bring Mawile in safely and gain the matchup advantage. Not only that, but Mawile can synergize with the VoltTurners by weakening their checks or threatening to KO them outright. More examples I can offer would be U-turn Primeape, Volt Switch Lanturn, and Baton Pass Musharna.

Other Options
=============

A defensive Stealth Rock set is Mawile's most notable Other Option. With a great ability in Intimidate and a great defensive typing, Mawile could definitely be a great defensive Pokemon with his plethora of support options, like Stealth Rock, Taunt, and the combination of Swords Dance + Baton Pass. Sadly, Steelix being in the tier severely reduces this set's viability, as Steelix has better defenses and a better typing to wall other Pokemon. Swords Dance is an option on the offensive set as a +2 Mawile is a very dangerous wallbreaker, and can be dangerous to offensive teams as well thanks to Swords Dance boosting Sucker Punch's power, but that means not running Fire Blast, leaving you suspectible to Steelix switchins. Stealth Rock is an option on the offensive set as well thanks to Mawile's ability to force switchins, but it doesn't have room for it and Mawile is usually better used luring Pokemon than setting up. Swords Dance with Intimidate isn't a bad option either, as people will assume it's the defensive set, giving Mawile more oppourtunities to set up. A specially-based moveset can be used to catch most physical walls off-guard, but Play Rough is pretty much mandatory on Mawile and it isn't as strong as the physically-based moveset, so a fully special Mawile isn't very viable.
- Pain Split and Super Fang can be mentioned on the defensive set. However, also note that defensive Mawile can have difficulty choosing between its moves in order to be effective.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fire-types**: Fire-types resist Mawile's dual STAB moves and can usually take a Sucker Punch and OHKO Mawile with their STAB attacks. Charizard can even predict a Sucker Punch if it's weakened from Stealth Rock (remove this unnecessary point) and Roost off the damage.

**Faster Pokemon**: Mawile has a low base 50 Speed, meaning almost all offensive Pokemon will outspeed it and potentially KO it. Sucker Punch mitigates this problem somewhat, but it can only kill weakened Pokemon, leaving Mawile with a bad matchup against faster teams.

**Bulky Ground-types**: Bulky Ground-types, like Golurk and Rhydon, can take a hit from Mawile and OHKO it with Earthquake or Earth Power. Rhydon and Piloswine run the risk of being 2HKOed by Iron Head, however. Steelix also deserves a mention, as it tanks every one of Mawile's STAB moves and forces it to run can take a Fire Blast.

**Special Attackers**: Due to running a Special Defense lowering nature and Mawile's naturally low Special Defense stat lets special attackers like Samurott, Aurorus, and Magmortar to run all over it. Even resisted hits like Abomasnow's Blizzard can 2HKO Mawile.
More examples of Pokemon should be mentioned for each section.
- For the Fire-type section, obviously bring up Magmortar and Pyroar, with Pyroar and Charizard being able to circumvent Sucker Punch with Will-O-Wisp. Combusken may not resist Play Rough, but it does resist Sucker Punch, meaning it is able to easily revenge Mawile.
- Mention notable faster Pokemon that have an easier time revenging Mawile (powerful special attackers, Pokemon that resist Sucker Punch or can circumvent it with status).
- I'm somewhat skeptical to the 'Bulky Ground-types' section: they're shaky checks at best since precisely none of them can even switch in on Mawile at all (Mawile has Sucker Punch for the faster Ground-types, such as Golurk and Claydol. Btw you should've added Claydol earlier if you were going to bring up Earth Power.
Meanwhile I request the addition of new sections above the 'bulky Ground-types' section:
--- **Steel-types**: Resist both of Mawile's dual STABs, have to be wary of Fire Blast. Examples include Steelix, Klinklang, Ferroseed, I'm sure you'd know how to write this up.
--- **Bulky Poison Types**: Resist Play Rough. Garbodor can whittle Mawile with Rocky Helmet, Weezing threatens a faster Will-O-Wisp or Flamethrower, Vileplume can trip up Mawile with a timely Effect Spore and retaliate with Hidden Power.
- At this point, you can merge the 'Special Attackers' bit with 'Faster Pokemon'.

Play Rough is Mawile's main STAB move, and is quite powerful after the boost from Sheer Force and Life Orb, dealing heavy damage to anything that doesn't resist it. Either remove this add-on or put in a relevant example of what makes it powerful Iron Head provides important coverage against Fairy-types like Mega Audino and hits Rock-types such as Rhydon and Regirock. Fire Blast is needed to 2HKO Steelix, who which would otherwise counter Mawile entirely, and also hits Steel-types like Ferroseed and Klinklang, as well as hitting Vileplume and Gourgeist-XL, (AC) hard. Maximum investment in Attack and Speed maximizes Mawile's offensive potential. Try to force switchins with Mawile by threatening Pokemon like Hariyama so Mawile can lure and break down the switchin. This sentence simply makes no sense at all; are we trying to switch OUT Hariyama and then hitting the switch-in? Is it about predicting the Mawile counter and using Fire Blast? Please elaborate It is also Mawile is immune to Toxic and Poison-type moves, so try to switch it in on those. Mawile should be used as a wallbreaker, luring in and breaking down walls with its coverage moves. (period) This sentence should be both the first in the Usage Tips as well as the Overview Play Rough should be spammed unless the opponent has a Pokemon that resists it resist to it. Mawile synergizes well with the VolTurners users by weakening or KOing their checks. how and what? Other examples of good VoltTurners users are U-Turn Primeape, Baton Pass Musharna, and Volt Switch Lanturn.

Other Options
=============

A defensive Stealth Rock set is Mawile's most notable Other Option usable variation. With a great ability in Intimidate and a great defensive typing, Mawile could definitely be a great defensive Pokemon with his its plethora of support options, like Stealth Rock, Taunt, and the combination of Swords Dance + Baton Pass. Sadly, Steelix being in the tier severely reduces this set's viability, as Steelix has better defenses and a better typing to wall other Pokemon. Defensive Mawile does have some good niches over Steelix, such as Pain Split and Super Fang, but has trouble choosing the moves it needs to be effective. Swords Dance is an option on the offensive set as a +2 Mawile is a very dangerous wallbreaker, and can be dangerous to offensive teams as well thanks to Swords Dance boosting Sucker Punch's power, but that means not running Fire Blast, leaving you Mawile susceptible to Steelix switchins. Stealth Rock is an option on the offensive set as well thanks to Mawile's ability to force switchins switches, but it doesn't have room for it the move and Mawile is usually better used luring Pokemon than setting up where does anything talk about luring opposing pokemon in this analysis?. Swords Dance with Intimidate isn't a bad option either, as people will assume it's the defensive set, giving Mawile more oppourtunities to set up. Or would they just assume you are a bad player that doesn't know about Steelix? Idk. I'm not sure exactly how Intimidate + Swords Dance helps it instead of just hurting its offensive power. A specially-based moveset can be used to catch most physical walls off-guard, but Play Rough is pretty much mandatory on Mawile and it isn't as strong as the physically-based moveset, so a fully special Mawile isn't very viable. If we wanted to say this at all I would think "Special Mawile isn't viable because there's literally anything else in the tier" would work better, no?

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fire-types**: Fire-types resist Mawile's dual STAB moves and can usually take a Sucker Punch and OHKO Mawile w ith their STAB attacks.

**Faster Pokemon**: Mawile has a low base 50 Speed, meaning almost all offensive Pokemon will outspeed it and potentially KO it. Sucker Punch mitigates this problem somewhat, but it can only kill KO weakened Pokemon, leaving Mawile with a bad matchup against faster teams. Powerful special attackers, Pokemon that can resist or shrug off Sucker Punch or circumvent it with status have an easier time revenging Mawile as well. Examples of these revenge killers include Rotom, Hitmonchan, and Primeape. Even offensive Pokemon like Magmortar and Samurott can outspeed Mawile and revenge kill it.

**Steel-types**: Steel-types resist both of Mawile's STAB moves, only fearing Fire Blast on the switch-in, and can retaliate with their STAB moves or coverage, making them reliable Mawile checks usually. reliable + usually + check is saying it's a reliable answer but not counter, sometimes Examples of these Steel-types include Steelix, Klinklang, and Ferroseed.

**Poison-types**: Poison-types resist Play Rough, (RC) and can usually take an Iron Head and retaliate. Garbodor can whittle Mawile down with Rocky Helmet, Weezing can threaten with its faster Will-O-Wisp or Flamethrower, The standard weezing set with 108 Speed EVs is slower than this Mawile and Vileplume can cripple Mawile with Effect Spore and hurt Mawile badly with Hidden Power Fire.

However, none of these Ground-types want to switch into Mawile due to Mawile's powerful STAB moves and coverage, so they are shaky checks at best.

1/2

Ok, so this is "GP 1/2" but I believe there to be several QC issues here. Nowhere in the overview does it actually say mawile's main job (wallbreaking), or "what to expect when you see mawile". What are its actual strengths over other NU wallbreakers? Does it KO anything notable? A list of targets that other things can't hit would be fantastic here. Then later, we start talking about luring opposing Pokemon in...how exactly can Mawile lure anything if it only has one notable set? Should it be used as a lure at all? I thought the general idea was to just smash stuff with big damage rather than lure / sweep. The Team Options section focuses on Pokemon that will help out Mawile's weaknesses, not ones that Mawile will help out. It makes it seem like Mawile is going to be the centerpiece of the team, which is contradictory to saying it only has average stats and has other competitors that can do more.

Can QC take another look at this? Because it was fairly hard for me to grasp the point of using mawile, which should be fairly obvious to such a simple pokemon.

Overview
Mawile is a unique Pokemon in NU, as it has a great ability in Sheer Force as well as a great defensive typing to back it up.
Give examples of some of its moves which are boosted by Sheer Force. Remove the part saying that its defensive typing is great, because while it does have a lot of resistances it is undermined by its subpar bulk.
Combine the 2nd and 3rd sentences.
Mawile has a lot of coverage in its STAB moves and moves like Sucker Punch to threaten offensive teams, and is a pain for defensive teams to handle due to its inability to be worn down by Life Orb recoil.
Something to add about why having really good coverage moves is that it allows Mawile to easily break past defensive cores, furthermore this is also a notable trait of its role as a mixed attacker.
preventing Mawile from utilizing it's resistances, such to Grass, Ice, and Psychic.
No need to state exactly what its resistances are, people who play Pokemon know what Steel resists and you can also see what something resists right on the dex. What should be stated here is that its low special bulk is a hindrance given that quite a few of its resists are specially based attacking types.
It also is outmatched from Steelix in defensive roles
This is not relevant to say, as it implies that a defensive set is usable but Steelix's presence makes it well, unusable. Such a sentence like this would make more sense if it only faced competition, but if its completely outclassed there's no need.

Moves
Play Rough is quite powerful after the boost from Sheer Force and Life Orb, capable of 2HKOing Pokemon sch as Xatu and Claydol.
2HKOing those Pokemon isn't the most useful/relevant thing in the world to note, so I'd like you to either simply list some slower Dark and Fighting types which Mawile threatens out, or just say it has good neutral coverage.
Iron Head provides important coverage against Fairy-types like Mega Audino and hits Rock-types such as Rhydon and Regirock.
Play Rough 2HKOes Clefairy, the only other relevant Fairy-type so that part should specifically say Mega Audino, add Poison-types as targets of this move.
Sucker Punch is Mawile's best move against offensive teams, as it can pick off weakened threats with its priority.
Give examples of faster Pokemon.
Move Grass Knot to OO, it's simply just not good as Quagsire isn't common enough.

Usage Tips

Calling this set a lure doesn't make sense because it is the only set listed, while a lure is typically a set which is generally subpar compared to a standard set in favor of specializing a target.
Mawile's poor special bulk means it is 2HKOed by even resisted special hits like Abomasnow's Blizzard, but its excellent defensive typing lets it be a one-time check to attackers like Shiftry and Mesprit.
Mawile is not a good check to Shiftry because it loses its Life Orb in the process, change this to Swellow, and specify offensive Mesprit since defensive has a much easier time taking Mawile's attacks and Mawile can switch into defensive Mesprit's Psychic more than once. Specify that Mawile should not switch into either of these Pokemon, as it is easily 2HKOed; acting as a one time check may be vague for newer readers.
Mawile is immune to Toxic and Poison-type moves, so try to switch it in on those.
Mawile doesn't want to switch into any Poison-types bar physical Skuntank, and most Toxic users are rather risky for Mawile to switch into as well.

Team Options

For the Pokemon that check Fire-types, change Poliwrath and Mantine to Floatzel and Kabutops, note that Floatzel provides Baton Pass for Mawile which is always useful for a slow wallbreaker.

OO
Mawile could definitely be a great defensive Pokemon
No, it cannot be a great defensive Pokemon, its simply just barely usable as a set only on specific teams. Note that a defensive set would be using a moveset of solely Play Rough, Stealth Rock, Swords Dance, and Baton Pass.
Defensive Mawile does have some good niches over Steelix, such as Pain Split and Super Fang, but has trouble choosing the moves it needs to be effective.
Remove this line.
Change the line about Swords Dance on the offensive set to say that it would be used over Iron Head, as Fire Blast is too crucial to pass up on.

Changed the title to QC until these changes are made; Brandon - feel free to PM myself or Hootie on PS if you have any questions regarding these changes.

GP 2/2
[OVERVIEW]
Mawile is a unique Pokemon in NU, as it has a great ability in Sheer Force boosting the power of both its STAB moves along with and its coverage moves. Mawile is a great wallbreaker, able to lure in and break down walls for other teammates to sweep, and with its powerful STABs and coverage, it can be a pain for defensive teams to handle because of its inability to be worn down by Life Orb recoil and its powerful STAB moves and coverage allowing it to easily break past defensive cores. However, Mawile is slow and frail though, meaning it has to rely on Sucker Punch against offensive teams, and its poor bulk means that even resisted hits can do a significant amount of damage, preventing Mawile from utilizing its resistances, most of which are mostly comprised of specially based attacking types. It also faces competition from other wallbreakers such as Samurott and Magmortar, which can provide more defensive utility to a team with their better bulk or defensive typings.

[SET]
name: Mixed Wallbreaker
move 1: Play Rough
move 2: Iron Head
move 3: Fire Blast
move 4: Sucker Punch
item: Life Orb
ability: Sheer Force
nature: Naughty
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Fire Blast is needed to 2HKO Steelix, who which would otherwise counter Mawile entirely, and also hits Steel-types like Ferroseed and Klinklang, (RC) as well as Vileplume and Gourgeist-XL, (RC) hard. Sucker Punch is Mawile's best move against offensive teams, as it can pick off weakened threats like Swellow with its priority.

Set Details
========

Maximum investment in Attack and Speed maximizes Mawile's offensive potential. The remaining EVs are put into Special Attack with a Naughty nature to keep Fire Blast decently powerful. Sheer Force is chosen over Intimidate to negate Life Orb recoil on moves with having a secondary effect, which is all of Mawile's moves except Sucker Punch.

Usage Tips
========
Mawile should be used as a wallbreaker, breaking down walls with its coverage moves. Play Rough should be spammed unless the opponent has a Pokemon who that resists it. Mawile should still not switch into these Pokemon, as it is still easily 2HKOed by their attacks.

========

Pokemon that can deal with Fire-types, such as Samurott, Floatzel, or and Kabutops, make for good partners to Mawile. Pokemon that can bring in Mawile safely by with Volt Switch or U-turn, like Scyther or and Rotom, make for good partners. Mawile synergizes well with the VoltTurners by weakening or KOing their checks by breaking them down. (doesn't really say anything that "weakening or KOing" doesn't) Other examples of good VoltTurn users are U-turn Primeape, Baton Pass Musharna, and Lanturn.

Other Options
=============

Swords Dance is an option on the offensive set over Iron Head, (AC) as a +2 Mawile is a very dangerous wallbreaker, (RC) and can be dangerous to offensive teams as well thanks to Swords Dance boosting Sucker Punch's power.

===================

**Fire-types**: Fire-types resist Mawile's dual STAB moves and can usually take a Sucker Punch and OHKO Mawile with their STAB attacks.

Powerful special attackers, (RC) and Pokemon that can resist or shrug off Sucker Punch or can circumvent it with status have an easier time revenge killing Mawile as well.

However, none of these Ground-types want to switch into Mawile due to its Mawile's powerful STAB moves and coverage, so they are shaky checks at best.
