Nihilego (Singles) (QC: 0/3)

[OVERVIEW]

Everyone's favorite squid parasite is here to put in work in Battle Spot Singles! Nihilego's offensive prowess comes from several factors. Nihilego has an amazing Speed tier of 103, putting it 1 point above Garchomp. Its typing is good both offensively and defensively, allowing it to hit a sizable chunk of the meta for at least neutral. Nihilego's movepool, while not terribly too diverse, is very specialized and packs strong coverage options. Add to that the wide variety of sets that Nihilego can run, and you've got a solid threat that can be fine-tuned based on your team's needs.

What holds Nihilego back is her inability to cover everything that she is weak to in one set. If she doesn't run a damage boosting item, she drops a few important OHKOs on Pokemon like Garchomp, Celesteela, and Tapu Fini. On the flip side, it's very easy to revenge kill Nihilego unless she's running Focus Sash or Choice Scarf. Her poor bulk only worsens her situation against other more threatening Pokemon. In summary, her strength comes from her ability to surprise her opponents, so use that to your a

Moves

Stealth Rock transforms Nihilego into a surprisingly good lead. This set pairs well with sweepers, as it aids in taking down some prevalent walls. double STAB is a must on almost every Nihilego set. Your coverage move can be adjusted based on your team's needs, e.g. Thunderbolt for Celesteela and Hidden Power Ice for Garchomp.

A Focus Sash lets Nihilego take one hit and survive. This is especially helpful on a set with Stealth Rock, as it gives you a free window to set up your Stealth Rocks. You can also run a Life Orb to hit harder, at a cost of survivability. Timid Nature with 252 Speed EVs hits 170 Speed, which is great because it outspeeds Garchomp by 1 point.

Team Options
========

In general, this variant of Nihilego will most commonly be found paired up with Pokemon that are fast and powerful, such as Tapu Koko and Pheromosa. In particular, Mimikyu can set up a sweep and has priority; it performs really well when Stealth Rock is set up. Gyarados has the added benefit of compliment Nihilego nicely typing-wise, while fulfilling a similar role to Mimikyu.

Moves
========

Since this set forgoes Stealth Rock, you now have room for another coverage move. Once again, you should be running Sludge Bomb and Power Gem. Because of the extra move slot, Psyshock now becomes a good option to hit certain threats like Mega Gengar.

Set Details
========

Choice Scarf turns Nihilego from an offensive support Pokemon to a potent revenge killer that can take out just about anything that's already been damaged a bit. The EVs are still very simple; this set will also outspeed Scarf Garchomp as well, which comes in han

Usage Tips

-bring it in late game and press a button lol

Team Options
========

Because of the nature of Choice Scarf, you should partner this set with something that can switch into things that threaten Nihilego. Celesteela is strong and bulky, can tank hits for Nihilego and dish out big damage of its own. The two form a powerful offensive core. Tapu Lele has amazing offensive presence but often misses out on important OHKOs; Nihilego can pick up the slack when needed.

Other Options
=============

Sludge Wave over Sludge Bomb is good if you really want the damage, but it doesn't OHKO anything notable that Sludge Bomb doesn't, and it has less poison chance. A set with Life Orb and 4 attacks is possible to run. One of the more interesting Nihilego sets is a bulky attacker with Sitrus Berry. Nihilego doesn't often invest in bulk, but this set can take surprising hits from things like Cloyster. Nihilego has more options in its movepool, such as Reflect and Light Screen, Toxic Spikes, Grass Knot, and dazzling Gleam.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Steel-types**: Nihilego doesn't have a lot of ways to counter Steel-types. Thunderbolt can put a dent in Celesteela, but it isn't an OHKO, and it can retaliate with a Heavy Slam. Other Steel-types, such as Kartana, shred Nihilego with super effective attacks and either good bulk or quick Speed.
**Priority**: Nihilego is weak on the defensive side, so strong priority attacks will KO Nihilego. Common users of priority moves are Mimikyu and Azumarill.

The bulky set is

Nihilego @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Beast Boost
Level: 50
EVs: 196 HP / 252 Def / 44 SpA / 4 SpD / 12 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Power Gem
- Sludge Bomb
- Thunder Wave
- Stealth Rock

SpA investment is for beast boost, speed is 125 (1 above max Celesteela),
Among other things it takes a cloyster +2 spear. +2 252+ Atk Cloyster Icicle Spear (5 hits) vs. 196 HP / 252+ Def Nihilego: 210-255 (100.4 - 122%)

cant say I think bomb and wave are largely interchangable, haven't yet seen any major calcs for wave vs bomb so just the usual preference on higher poison chance against slight increase in damage.

cant say higher poison chance, and i'm pretty sure sludge bomb already OHKOs everything it needs to. I can't think of any scenario in which the small extra power is a big benefit off the top of my head, but who knows.

So obviously this isn't ready for a full check yet, but I just got a few things to say!

-I'd consider Psyshock over Psychic. You do a bit more to Mega Gengar, and unlike Psychic, Psyshock actually 2HKOs opposing Nihilego! Also, if you pair Nihilego with Tapu Lele, Psyshock has an 87.5% chance to OHKO Mega Gengar under Psychic Terrain, which is better than Psychic's 68.8% chance.

-While Nihilego is totally one of the best users of Stealth Rock at the moment, I think you may want to consider slashing in coverage with Stealth Rock as well and calling the set "Sash Attacker" or something, since the extra coverage can make Nihilego a lot harder to wall.
