Hello! Navigating through Twitter I saw this game:
After researching its features I decided to make a challenge of it. Its a Romhack of Pokemon Yellow (a game I have never played) in which the Starter Pikachu has been replaced by Cramorant. Unlike other Pokemon games I played, this one doesn,t have many changes, but it does have some:
-Well, the Cramorant thing.
-Arrokuda and Barraskewda are the other new Mons.
-All 154 Pokemon are obtainable.
-Pokemon distribution is better in general across routes.
-Trainers have more Pokemon and there are more trainers. Gym Leaders are still pretty easy, but are nonetheless improved.
-More hidden items.
-Move relearner and deleter.
Unfortunately, already existing Pokemon are not improved at all. This means, most of the Pokedex has a crappy movepool.
An average Nuzlocke of this game would have been too easy, so I made some extra rules:
-I can,t use Pokemon Center (except the PC), Pokemarts and Game Corner. This is the most important rule, meaning I will have to live with the items I find. Pokeballs will be limited, healing items will have to be saved and managing PPs will be the main issue.
-To win the challenge, I need to defeat every single trainer, every single fixed encounter (except the ones I catch) and one of each Pokemon species found in each route (except Rod ones, Fishing is pain). The Pokemon part means more experience to get, but also more PPs spent, same for the trainers.
-I can only catch the first Pokemon that appears on each location unless I already have it or I don,t have any Pokeball at that moment (this can happen). If I don,t have any Pokeball, I may return to the location later to catch a Mon there.
- Gift Mons and Static encounters (such as Snorlax) are not considered the first catch of their locations, meaning I can catch them on top of catching one more Pokemon on that location. Static encounters I don,t catch have to be killed.
-Legendary Pokemon can be catched and used. Of course, only one of them (the one I will catch with a Masterball) is probably going to be used, since with such low catch rate, they would be consuming HP and PPs of my party.
-In this challenge, when a Pokemon dies, I can revive it (if I have the items for it).
-If after being on the team I place a Pokemon in the PC, I can,t use it again.
-Dead or alive, Cramorant has to be in the team during the whole game. If its dead, it will consume a slot.
Part 1. From Pallet Town to Pewter City.
So, it begins. Oak welcomes me to the Pokemon World and already shows my previous starter:
As always, I use my real name (Denys) and name my rival Shiyo.
The game begins in my room, where I pick a Potion. These are going to be really valuable without a Pokemon center to use.
When I try to go out of the town, Profesor Oak appears to stop me and then my future starter attacks him:
Oak easily catches the Cramorant and tells me to go to the lab. There, he tries to give a Pokemon, but evil Shiyo takes it before I can:
...this Pokemon!
So, Oak gives me Cramorant instead:
Compared to the Pikachu it replaces, Cramorant has far better Stats: 75 HP, 90 Attack, 60 Defense, 90 Special and 90 Speed. For this challenge, Water types and Flying types are going to be good options, since they learn the endless Surf and Fly. Cramorant is amazing, since it learns both. Moreover, the level-up movepool is really good: Cramorant will learn many Water and Flying moves, Quick Attack, Amnesia and Thrash (terrible in regular Nuzlockes, but decent here, since with 1 PP it can attack 2 or 3 times). Funnily enough, the last level-up move, at level 100, is SPLASH. For a Pokemon that will have to stay during the whole journey, Cramorant is well prepared for it.
I have my first battle when I try to leave the Lab:
Battle music is from Kanto trainer of GSC. Shiyo has Arrokuda as starter. Cramorant uses Peck and takes a Bite, losing 7 HP out of 23.
Arrokuda is faster next turn and takes another 7 HP. Cramorant hits it with Peck.
Cramorant uses Peck, but Arrokuda survives in red, using Tail Whip.
Arrokuda uses Tail Whip again on the final turn, but misses. Cramorant finishes the fish with another Peck:
For a fish that is supposed to be Cramorant's prey, it was a challenging battle. But it will be even harder when that fish evolves. For now, Cramorant levels up and learns Water Gun.
Blue leaves and then I hear my Cramorant's cry:
...Cramorant dislikes Pokeballs!
So, I have to keep Cramorant outside of the Pokeball:
I check Cramorant and realize that is healed to full. I think this is the only autoheal of the game.
I leave Pallet Town. On route 1 there are still only Rattatas and Pidgeys, which I have to kill one of each. There is also a new lake there:
A Pokemart worker gives me a Potion. Yay, now I have 2. I face a wild Rattata and kill it with Water Gun + Peck, no damage was taken.
Cramorant grows to level 7. Before reaching Viridian City, I face a Pidgey, killing it with Water Gun + Peck. Unlike Rattata, the bird gets to damage Cramorant:
This way, all land Pokemon of Route 1 have been defeated. However, Water has Magikarp, Arrokuda and Pikachu here.
Mons left on Route 1:Pidgey, Rattata, Magikarp, Arrokuda and Pikachu.
I reach Viridian City. There I pick a hidden Potion in a tree.
At the Pokemart I am given Oak's Parcel. I bring it to Oak and receive a Pokedex, but no Pokeballs yet.
I visit Route 2. Two if the Cut trees there have been removed, so I can pick a Moonstone and an HP UP, which I feed Cramorant.
Oak's aide at the Route 2 gate in this game wants me to catch only 5 Pokemon in order to give the Flash TM. However, I have just Cramorant for now.
Route 2 has Pidgey, Rattata and both Nidorans as Mons. Cramorant kill a Rattata spending again 1 Water Gun PP and 1 Peck, this time Rattata crits with Tackle and takes 6 HPs:
No problem, since Cramorant regains 3 of them by levelling up.
Pidgey is the next prey and manages to crit too with Gust before being critted by Peck:
I won,t fight any Nidorans for now. With Cramorant as my only Mon and no Antidotes yet, a Poison Sting would be game over if it gets poison.
Mons left on Route 2:Pidgey, Rattata, Nidoran F, Nidoran M.
I enter Viridian Forest. Mons that apepar here are Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, Kakuna, Pidgey, Pikachu and Pidgeotto. The big bird is dangerous, since it appears at level 10, higher than Cramorant. First prey however is a free Metapod, killed by 1 Peck:
Mons left in Viridian Forest: Caterpie,Metapod, Weedle, Kakuna, Pidgey, Pikachu and Pidgeotto.
Cramorant raises to level 9 after killing the Metapod.
I then face a trainer, which I think in the original games didn,t appear:
I tremble in fear when I see the Lass's first Mon, a female Nidoran. However, I then check Nidoran's data and realize I worried for nothing: both Nidorans learn Poison Sting at level 17. Cramorant wins vs Nidoran by using Water Gun + Peck, taking a Tackle. The other Mon is a male Nidoran. Cramorant spends 2 PP on it too, but isn,t damaged, since it uses Leer. Cramorant wins with 17 HP out of 35, which become 19 out of 37, since it grows to level 10, learning Gust.
Soon after that, I kill a Caterpie with Peck:
Mons left in Viridian Forest:Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, Kakuna, Pidgey, Pikachu and Pidgeotto.
I then find my first Poke Ball. I could now catch a Pokemon, but instead of that, I avoid the Grass and leave the Viridian Forest.
I cross Viridian City and go to Route 22.
I cross the grass there without any Pokemon appearing, which works for my goal. I then use a Potion on Cramorant, which heals it to full. Now I have only 2 Potions.
However, I soon find an invisible one:
With my stock replenished, I face Shiyo:
Shiyo leads with a Level 9 Spearow. Cramorant uses Water Gun and has the Attack lowered with Growl. Next Water Gun kills Spearow:
Level 8 Arrokuda comes. Cramorant crits with Gust and has the Defense lowered with Tail Whip.
I realize Gust is Normal type in this game, so it actually hits weaker than Peck. Cramorant crits with Peck too and the battle is finished:
Cramorant grows to level 11, Shiyo heads out.
Unfortunately my goal of NOT facing any Pokemon fails, a Mankey appears and I have to catch it:
My goal was to not face any Mon, since if you defeat rival here and still not have any Mon, Oak gives you 5 Pokeballs. Now I will have to continue my journey with just 2 Mons for a while. Speaking about Mankey, in vanilla Yellow he would have been the only option in this challenge to succeed vs Brock. Here, he is not needed, though I will still train it a little. Level up movepool is bad, but Mankey does learn Low Kick at level 9, so it will be able to kill some Normal Mons. In the long run however, either I will have to spend TMs on Mankey, or he will have to die and be placed at the PC, I can,t see this Mon making it to the Pokemon League (not even Gym 3 in fact).
I train Mankey a little at Route 1, but this proves to not be a very good idea:
I heal Mankey to full with Potion, 2 remain. On route 2 I try to find a Nidoran, since they have non STAB Tackle or Scratch, but instead I encounter a level 8 Pidgey (rarest Mon of the route, specifically the level 8 part), which doesn,t let Mankey escape and damages both it and Cramorant with Gust. At least after Cramorant kills said Pidgey, Mankey grows to level 6.
Back at Viridian Forest, I put Cramorant as lead and kill a Caterpie with Gust.
Then I face a Bug Catcher, Cramorant kills both Weedle and Caterpie without taking damage.
Next Bug Catcher has 4 Mons and leads with Metapod. Cramorant damages it with Gust, then I switch Mankey in to get experience. Makney spends a lot of Scratches before finally klling Metapod, which makes Cramorant grow to level 13 and learn Bubble instead of Growl. Bug Catcher sends Caterpie, so Cramorant has to take some damage from Tackle. Cramorant kills both Caterpie and Weedle. Vs last Mon Kakuna Cramorant again uses Gust and then I switch Mankey in to finish. Mankey grows to level 7 after killing the cocoon.
I encounter a wild Weedle and kill it with Peck:
Mons left in Viridian Forest:Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, Kakuna, Pidgey, Pikachu and Pidgeotto.
I find a Potion, now I have 3 again. Will be useful considering the low health of my Mons.
A wild Metapod gives some experience to both Cramorant and Mankey.
A Bug Catcher's Caterpie killed with Peck makes Cramorant grow to level 14. He sends Metapod after that, but this one has Tackle and damages Mankey (which I tried to train) with it. Cramorant comes back and finishes Metapod with Gust.
With Cramorant's help, Mankey kills a wild Metapod, but only has now 8 Scratches left.
Next Metapod is killed by Cramorant himself, but Mankey still gets experience and grows to level 8.
I find another Potion (now having 4) and a secret new house:
Inside, a Man gives me a Safari Ball:
Idk why is a Safari Ball given outside of the actual Safari, but I take it.
I try to leave Viridian Forest to avoid my first catch there (since now I have a Pokeball the next Mon counts as first catch) being a Bug that only knows Harden, but fail miserably at that, a Metapod appears. I decide to not catch it, instead killing it with Cramorant and giving some more experience to Mankey. So, there will be no catch in Viridian Forest.
I check Cramorant's page and see that the next move he will learn will be Quick Attack at level 14. So, I decide to spend the remaining Gust PPs on wild Metapods, giving Mankey experience in the process.
The next wild Mon that appears is a Pikachu however. Cramorant takes no chances and kills it with Water Gun crit:
His face after eating the Pikachu:
Mons left on Viridian Forest: Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, Kakuna, Pidgey, Pikachu and Pidgeotto.
Cramorant also kills a wild Pidgey:
Mons left on Viridian Forest: Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, Kakuna, Pidgey, Pikachu and Pidgeotto.
Several Metapods appear and Cramorant kills them all until ending the Gust PPs, sharing experience with Mankey in the process.
Last trainer of the forest has a Caterpie and a Weedle. Cramorant Pecks them both and grows to level 15, learning Quick Attack and forgetting the PP less Gust. I also find a hidden 5th Potion:
There are still 2 Mons not seen in the forest. First is Kakuna (forgot to take Screenshot), which gives experience both to Cramorant and Mankey.
I then kill a Metapod and Mankey finally grows to level 9 and learns Low Kick. Now it will be a little easier to train it, though the next move (Karate Chop) is all the way at level 15 and I am not sure if Mankey can make it without spending many resources on him.
It takes a long time to find a Pidgeotto and almost as long to kill it, since it uses Sand Attack 6 times while Cramorant misses the moves, until finally killing it (I also had to spend a Potion).
All Mons in Viridian Forest have been cleared. The cost in terms of PPs was high, due to Pidgeotto:
Cramorant still has a lot of ammunition, but I now need to carefully spend Moves until I find an Ether somewhere.
In the second part of Route 2 I can try to catch a Mon with the Safari Ball. However, the Rattata that appears is only at level 5, meaning it would be very hard to train without spending resources on it. Mankey kills it with Low Kick. There will be no catch on Route 2.
Mankey spends 3 more Scratches to kill a male Nidoran, who uses Leer twice:
Mons left on Route 2:Pidgey, Rattata, Nidoran F, Nidoran M.
Mankey ignores all Mons on the route except Level 5 Rattatas, who he kills with Low Kicks, reaching level 10 this way. Eventually a female Nidoran appears, its at level 7 so I decide to use Cramorant for it. Cramorant avoid damage and uses 2 Bubbles to kill the Nidoran:
Route 2 cleared. Way easier than Viridian Forest.
I arrive to Pewter City, where Cramorant falls asleep after hearing a Jigglypuff Sing:
I explore the city and find a hidden Moon Stone:
Also a Great Ball:
I enter Brock's Gym and lead Mankey vs Jr. Traniner's Diglett. I switch Cramorant in, taking a Scratch. Cramorant kills both Diglett and Sandshrew with Water Gun, growing to level 16.
I decide this is a good moment to use a Potion on Cramorant.
Now, its Brock time:
I lead with Mankey vs Geodude. I immediately switch Cramorant in, avoiding a Tackle.
Considering Brock is the least improved Gym leader in this game (his Onix does have Bind though), the rest of the battle goes as you would expect:
Mankey grows to level 11, Cramorant to level 17.
I get the badge and the Bide TM. Its not as bad as in a regular Nuzlocke, but can only be taught once.
Finishing the chaper here. Current team:
PPs:
Items:
-3 Potions.
-2 Moon Stones.
-10 Safari Balls. Wait, they are 10? Didn,t check it until now. Loool, I am actually rich, should have caught the Metapod and the Rattata for sack slots.
-1 Great Ball.
-1 Bide TM.
Mons left on Route 1:Pidgey, Rattata, Magikarp, Arrokuda and Pikachu.
Mons left on Route 22: Nidoran M, Nidoran F,Mankey, Rattata, Spearow.
