~*~The Smogon Weekly Spriting Contest~*~
Because random symbols can make anything look better

Officially approved by Firestorm and Doomsday

Banner by Dragonknight08

Welcome one, welcome all to the one and only Smogon WSC! A Spiritng Contest (And Possibly an Art Contest if we can be bothered to make one) for all you aspiring digital artists to compete and improve your abilities.
Week 7

This Week's Theme: Devamps
Subtheme: Pokemon Yellow Style
Theme Suggester: Mordock
Description: Devamp a Pokemon to the style of Pokemon yellow! Now you can own Brock with a Mudkip :P. There is no specific way to do this really, just be creative and try your best.

Here are a couple Yellow sprites for reference:

Credit goes to Ninjabait - in effect as of Week 5:

General Rules

1. All Smogon Forum Rules Apply.

2. You're not allowed to ask when the next contest will be out, or when the next poll will be up.

3. If your entry is turned down, no whining, it broke the rules, get over it.

4. Stealing artwork is prohibited. If you are found to be stealing, you will be disqualified and banned from the current WSC contest, banned for five WSCs after two instances, and permanetly banned after three instances.

5. Have a question, or want to suggest a rule or theme? Feel free to post in the current WSC or PM a judge about it.

6. You are not allowed to reserve spots. There is not a limited amount of entries, and this just clogs up the thread with postcount++ posts, which are spam, if you haven't figured.

7. This isn't a comment thread. Quoting a sprite just to say that it looks good and contributing nothing to the topic, this is counted as spam. Constructive Criticism is exceptable, however.

8. If you have a problem, take it to PM. We don't want you spamming up the topic.

9. Please don't disrupt this thread (i.e. asking stupid questions repeatedly, trolling, etc). Repeated offenses can get you temporary bans from the WSC.

Pariticipation Rules

1. All entries must fit the theme. The Theme will be specified at the top of the first post.

2. All entries should fit the size restraints. A DPPHGSS styled sprite is 80x80, a GSCRSEFRLG styled sprite is 64x64, and a RBYG styled sprite is 54x54.

3. We'd prefer if your entry has a transparent background. It is still acceptable for a white background, though, it's just not preferred. If you want to make a sprite transparent, use the programs Paint.NET, Graphics Gale, GIMP, www.iaza.com, or Adobe Photoshop. MS Paint cannot make something transparent.

4. All entries should be saved as a .png for not animated weeks, and a .gif for animated weeks. .bmp and .jpg/.jpeg distort the qualit of the image, and program exclusive files cannot be uploaded to Photobucket, Imageshack, or Tinypic.

5. As a note about editing your entries: Editing is allowed, but only in small doses, such as small touchups to the outline, changing the colors, or shading fixes are acceptable. Completely changing your entry is not allowed.

Judge and Voting Rules and Notes

1. If you want to be a judge, just ask - simple enough. You will become a judge if all the other judges decide so, and/or if a judge doesn't mind subbing out.

2. Judges are allowed to enter the contests, but during judging, they are not allowed to nominate themselves for a poll spot, most humorous, or most original.

3. You are not allowed to vote for yourself on the poll. Anyone caught doing this will have their entry for the poll revoked, and the next runner up in the voting to take their place.

The Current Roster of Judges is:
Ninjabait, Teh_1337ness, Chaos669, TVboy Canti, and Mordock.

Deadline

The deadline is October 17, 2009 at 4:00PM EST. You have seven (7) days to get your entry in. After the deadline, judges will pick finalists, and a poll will be started over the course of 3 days to decide the winner.

Prizes

-An inclusion in the Hall of Fame, and after 1, 2, 3, or 4 wins, you will get a medal, or trophy.

Sorry, no Pokemon prizes this week - donators would be nice :).

The Spriting Hall of Fame!

Week 7 - Mass Fusion

To be decided

Week 8 - Yellow Devamps

To be decided

Poll is up! I also made it so you can see who voted for who. This will help any confusion and make it easier to see if anyone votes for themselves. Good luck to everyone!

You guys can post you know, don't be shy :(.

IMO everyone's waiting for some entries first, to see the standard they have to match/outdo. It's risky posting first as you can't withdraw your submission and make a new one, so if yours ends up getting outdone by the entries after it (which you'd expect, as people will attempt to do the best based on what's already been done) you're in a bad position and can't do anything about it.

The only possible benefit for early submission is the rare occasion that someone does the same Pokemon as you, in which case whoever doesn't submit first has to create a new submission, but like I said that's very unlikely/situational and thus doesn't outweigh the disadvantage.

Essentially, there's no benefit for submitting early, and very possible benefits for submitting later. That's one way of looking at it anyway, which I reckon some people might take.

Although no doubt some haven't had enough free time and thus haven't seen the new competition/finished their sprite yet etc.

Edit: Edited to sound more general.

Edit2: I believe Yellow sprites can go up to 56x56. Take Arcanine or Moltres for example. (It would make sense too as 56 is a multiple of 8)

I believe the reason why people aren't chomping at the bit here (yes, it is the first day still but in comparison to past WSCs this isn't popular) is that not many people actually know how to properly execute a devamp - I sure as hell don't.

For example, getting the sprites within the size limit and generally how to achieve the correct colour scheme is getting me. Of course, the natural way to go is to abstain from the current WSC but we'd just be left with fewer entries and less variety.

I hope I've made my point clear enough for your consideration.

May as well be the first to post....

Just randomly did a Luvdisc. The shading is kind of obnoxious and I'll probably edit it later (that counts as a minor edit right?). RBY shading is so annoying though, especially outlining, so I tried to mimic that as best I could

Elevator Music you're allowed to edit the shading. Just not the general build or construction of your sprite (like a body part).

Cool Absol Solstice ^^).

Just need to tweak my scizor then I'l be ready to go

I just used the scyther pose but I scratched everything else. The lack of colours is pretty balls but I can live

Yeah I think you've nailed it there. Although, this is a good reason to try I guess. I'm certainly going to have a shot, although I see devamping as one of the most pointless spriting skills (not saying it's easy, I just can't see the point (= ).

Yeah, I'll prob. end up struggling to create a scratch using the funky art style. This is the toughest competition so far.

Also posting to say that the Bronze Koffing should be ready for Agaki soon. [I think its already obvious he's going to win :(.] The basic sketch is ready, just need to sprite it out. I'll start on it after this week's WSC.

Alright, I'll post my Devamp which I'm pretty happy with and explain the procedure I used (this is by no means a definitive procedure, just how I decided to go about it)

1. Resize

a) I took the D/P Gallade sprite, resized the canvas to fit only Gallade, then scaled the image down to 54x54 (before I realised Yellow can be 56x56)
b) I treated the resize as a pixel-over, using the full size DP sprite as an example. So, I redrew the black outline, reshaded, did the outlines and all of that.
Basically, I now had a DP-style Gallade, only it was miniature.

2. Devamp
After the resize, this was pretty easy.

a) I investigated and discovered all Yellow sprites use 4 different colours, usually with something very close to black for outlining and something very close to white for highlights. The other two colours seemed to be base + shadow, in most cases. So I stole Venusaur's colours, as they were the kind of green I was looking for.
b) Replaced all of the black with the new black and all of the white/highlights with the new white (pretty straightforward)
c) Next I pretty much replaced all shading with the shadow colour and all base with the base colour. Naturally that wasn't quite good enough though, I had to do a bit of touching up to clean it up and better suit the style.
-One of the main techniques I noticed was, as one spriting guide calls them, "dots" vs "reverse dots". Basically, in DP style sprites, outline segments with two colours use the darker colour on the edges (this makes it look smooth on a black background) but Yellow style sprites do the opposite (very noticeable on a black background). So, I made the swap.

3. Final Touches

This was probably the most tentative step. Comparing my new Gallade to existing Yellow sprites made it look rather... pathetic. Not in a spriting style sense, but Gallade's actual size and proportions compared to other Pokemon. He looked too thin and frail... I know Gallade is supposed to be streamlined/aerodynamic or whatever you want to call it, but the sprite wasn't working for me. At first, I considered reposing him (many of the larger Yellow sprites used a pose that allowed their bulk to be represented, eg Charizard) but I thought I'd try simply bulking him up a bit first. So I basically just added a pixel or two width to all of his features except torso (I think even three to his head), touched up the shading and all of that, and was pretty happy with the results so I left it at that. (see top for final product/my submission)

Sorry, that's probably a bit of tldr, but that's how I went through with the Devamp in case others can find some helpful hints within.

I actually quite enjoyed this challenge though.

Well, I assumed Devamp meant taking an existing sprite and devamping it to Yellow style, hence "Devamp"... I mean, for a Revamp, you wouldn't just make a scratch sprite... would you?

That's what I thought anyway.

Agaki, I really did only post the whole method I used in case someone might take something helpful from it. No one has to read it/listen if they don't want to.

I do have a question. How do you resize the sprite so it get 54x54 ( or 56x56 ? ). I just use Paint and I cant make it be exactly 54x54 or so.

( ima done with my sprite, just needs resizing actually )

You can't resize a sprite without losing quality. Certain programs like Paint.net can resize without adding color shades, but it will still give you blocky lines. Your supposed to resize and then edit.

Here's my attempt this time around (missed the last few WSCs due to moving.) Tropius, heavily cannibalised but not completely scratched, nor just simply resized, with Exeggutor's horribly garish, but appropriate colours. Good luck to everyone entering :) .
