:sv/kingambit:

Hey I thought the Pokedex said Kingambit wasn't good at strategy...

[SET]
name: Stealth Rock Support
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Kowtow Cleave
move 3: Iron Head
move 4: Sucker Punch / Brick Break / Thunder Wave
item: Black Glasses / Chople Berry / Sitrus Berry
tera type: Flying / Fairy / Dark
ability: Supreme Overlord / Defiant
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Kingambit's excellent bulk and offensive presence make it a good, if unexpected, setter of Stealth Rock.

* **Brick Break** Brick Break makes Kingambit an effective stop against screen setters such as Grimmsnarl and Scream Tail and does good damage against opposing Kingambit.

* **Thunder Wave**: Thunder Wave isn't a particularly common move on Kingambit, potentially letting it ruin some sweepers such as Roaring Moon by surprise.

Other Options
========

* **Guillotine**: With Guillotine, passive play from foes like Corviknight and Dondozo becomes far more risky.

* **Taunt**: Taunt is effective at shutting down common support Pokemon such as Dondozo and Scream Tail.

* **Low Kick**: While it doesn't offer as much support as Brick Break, Low Kick deals far more damage to Tera Normal Dragonite and opposing Kingambit.

* **Tera Blast**: Tera Fairy Blast is Kingambit's best shot against Iron Hands, one of its biggest checks. It also makes sense with Tera Flying to hit Great Tusk hard.

Tera Types
========

* **Flying**: Tera Flying covers Kingambit's Fighting- and Ground-type weaknesses, making it do especially well against Great Tusk leads that lack Ice Spinner.

* **Fairy**: Tera Fairy can help prevent Iron Hands, one of the best Kingambit checks in the game, from OHKOing it.

* **Dark**: When using Sucker Punch, Tera Dark gives Kingambit some late-game cleaning potential.

Items
========

* **Black Glasses**: Kingambit's bulk and support options make Black Glasses a preferable option over Life Orb for more power, especially when using Sucker Punch.

* **Chople Berry**: Chople Berry eases Kingambit's devastating Fighting-type weakness, though note powerful STAB users of Close Combat such as Iron Hands require massive Defense investment to survive.

* **Sitrus Berry**: Sitrus Berry's quick burst of recovery keeps Kingambit more relevant in the later stages of the game.

* **Focus Sash**: Focus Sash will let Kingambit survive even the strongest Fighting-type attacks, if Stealth Rock desperately needs to be set up.

* **Leftovers**: Leftovers's constant recovery is a decent alternative to Sitrus Berry if another teammate is already using it.

Abilities
========

* **Supreme Overlord**: Even though this Kingambit is often set out early-game to set up Stealth Rock, Supreme Overlord gives it the flexibility to function later in the game if Stealth Rock isn't needed or if it manages to set up Stealth Rock without much harm to itself.

* **Defiant**: Besides punishing the rare use of Intimidate, Defiant lets Kingambit switch well into Pokemon that commonly use attacks that drop Speed, such as Scream Tail, and makes Parting Shot Grimmsnarl easier to punish when Kingambit is Terastallized.

EV Spreads
========

* **252 HP / 244 Atk / 12 Def**: If you're using Chople Berry, the extra Defense EVs let Kingambit survive Focus Sash Iron Valiant's Close Combat.

* **4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe**: Maximizing Speed lets Kingambit get the jump on opposing Kingambit and slower variants of Skeledirge, Corviknight, and Iron Hands.

So just a note: I made Thunder Wave an OO option because of a specific development: Iron Hands usage has been skyrocketing, and MAN did that make Thunder Wave sink like a rock on Kingambit lol. I think its still usable, but it certainly isn't as easy to use when Iron Hands is so common.

You say t wave has fallen off because of iron hands, but it’s at its highest usage this gen according to stats.

I think slot 4 should just be sucker / t wave / taunt and drop black glasses from items. way too many options at the moment.

I will admit I was more referring to within the season rather than compared to series 2, but you're right on the Twave stuff!

Anyways, its tricky because SR Kingambit can just do a LOT of stuff. Currently I slashed Thunder Wave back in, and moved Focus Sash to a mention because it appears to be really rare atm. I kept Black Glasses mainly because: if you're using Sucker Punch, its REALLY good imo, it lets this Kingambit function pretty closely to the usual set if needed.

* **Defiant**: Besides punishing the rare use of Intimidate, Defiant lets Kingambit switch well into Pokemon that commonly use attacks that drop Speed, such as Scream Tail, and makes Parting Shot Grimmsnarl easier to punish.
someone in the discord pointed this out, it's probably worth clarifying that this is when you are tera'd into a non-dark type so as to not confuse newer players.
