After a significant drop in usage in SM Monotype due to being overshadowed by Celesteela, Skarmory is back to terrorize Monotype thanks to its stellar defensive typing, great Defense stat, access to amazing utility moves, and, most importantly, ability to deal with physical threats to Steel-type teams like Urshifu, against which Celesteela falls short. Spikes allows Skarmory to punish opposing switch-ins. Body Press allows it to OHKO threats like Bisharp and Tyranitar. Whirlwind phazes walls like Toxapex and setup sweepers like Dragapult. Roost and Leftovers provide Skarmory longevity. Heatran and Excadrill act as great teammates, switching in against Fire- and Electric-type attacks directed at Skarmory, respectively, while Skarmory in return provides a Ground immunity. Ferrothorn helps against Water-types, provides Leech Seed support, and forms a great hazard stack core with Skarmory. Lastly, Skarmory along with Heatran and Aegislash form the renowned immunity core on Steel teams.

After a significant drop in usage in SM Monotype due to being overshadowed by Celesteela, Skarmory is back to terrorize Monotype thanks to its stellar defensive typing, above-average defense stat, access to utility moves such Spikes, Whirlwind, (AC) and Toxic, (AC) and most importantly, its ability to deal with common physical attackers such as Urshifu and Galarian Zapdos, against whom Celesteela falls short, falls short against such as Urshifu and Galarian Zapdos, and which otherwise pose a major threat to Steel-type teams. Spikes allows Skarmory to punish and chip opposing switch-ins, this chip damage can also be taken advantage of by its offensive teammates. which also allows its offensive teammates to take advantage of. Body Press, in conjunction with its amazing Defense stat allows Skarmory to OHKO threats such as Bisharp and Tyranitar. Whirlwind allows Skarmory to phaze defensive walls such as Toxapex and offensive threats such as Substitute Dragapult, both of which Skarmory struggles to deal with. Whirlwind also synergizes well with Spikes and helps in forcefully chipping down foes. Roost provides longevity, allowing Skarmory to act as an effective defensive wall throughout the game while Leftovers provide Skarmory a form of passive recovery. Rocky Helmet can be used in-lieu of Leftovers to punish physical attackers such as Urshifu-R severely. Heatran and Excadrill act as great teammates, being able to switch in against Fire- and Electric-types directed at Skarmory, respectively, (AC) while Skarmory in return provides a Ground immunity to both Pokemon. Ferrothorn acts as a great teammate as it helps against Water-types, provides Leech Seed support, (AC) and forms a great hazard stack core with Skarmory. Lastly, Skarmory along with Heatran and Aegislash forms the renowned immunity core on Steel-type teams.
