trying to draw outline of shapes in GIMP

I have GIMP 2.6.11, and I'm trying to draw outlines of some rectangles. I understand that GIMP is not designed for drawing, but that what I want to do is entirely possible. I read the tutorial here, but when I follow the procedure, it doesn't work for me. Here's what happens:

I have an image with many guides, and I drew a rectangle using the rectangular selection tool.

I right-click in the selection space, go to Edit -> Stroke Selection.

I click Stroke.

I get this.

What am I doing wrong? How can I draw a rectangular outline in GIMP? I know it would be very easy to do in Paint, but I'd like to do it in GIMP because I want the aid of the guides I created.

Thanks!

Works for me (GIMP 2.6.10), regardless of whether I right click in the selection, outside the selection or use the global Edit menu. Maybe it's poor Windows support, though that'd be kind of weird. You can try this, though: right click, select, border, set an appropriate width, then use the fill tool to fill the selection.

In any case, Gimp can suck a dick. If vector drawing is acceptable, I recommend inkscape.
