This week, we have a recent metagame trend that's seen a massive rise in usage on the ladder:
| 72 | Ludicolo | 2.423% | (July)
| 27 | Ludicolo | 6.123% | (September)

Rain!

As you can see above, rain staples such as Ludicolo have risen up a massive 3.7% in usage due to the popularity of this offensive archetype! This team is a glorious example of this rising style of offense, with powerful rain staples Kabutops, Qwilfish, and Ludicolo, along with Alolan Sandslash to take advantage of pesky hail setters as well as providing removal!

Happy Breaking!

Abomasnow @ Life Orb
Hasty Nature
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
- Blizzard
- Earthquake
- Ice Shard
- Giga Drain

Poliwrath @ Leftovers
Impish Nature
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
- Scald
- Circle Throw
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Rain offense has an inherent problem with hail because of hail's ability to instantly set weather. This core seeks to exploit this weakness and neuter the Swift Swim sweepers. Poliwrath hard-counters both Kabutops and Alolaslash, and can phase/burn Qwilfish before it boosts to dangerous levels. With three forms of recovery (Lefties, Rest, Water Absorb) Poliwrath can shrug off passive damage and stay healthy all game.

The only mons on the team that threaten Poli are Mesprit and Ludicolo; Abomasnow is bulky enough to switch into either mon, and with max investment it outspeeds both in hail and 2HKOes with Blizzard. Whereas Poli is the wall, Abomasnow is the breaker -- nothing on this team is a safe switch-in, and spamming Blizzard/Giga Drain will quickly wear down rain offense.

4 Atk Poliwrath Circle Throw vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Sandslash-Alola: 216-256 (73.9 - 87.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
4 Atk Poliwrath Circle Throw vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Kabutops: 120-144 (45.9 - 55.1%) -- 55.9% chance to 2HKO

252 SpA Life Orb Abomasnow Giga Drain vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Qwilfish: 204-242 (61.2 - 72.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after hail damage
252 SpA Life Orb Abomasnow Blizzard vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Mesprit: 177-211 (48.7 - 58.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after hail damage

252+ Atk Qwilfish Explosion vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Poliwrath: 180-212 (46.8 - 55.2%) -- 14.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Life Orb Kabutops Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Poliwrath: 79-94 (20.5 - 24.4%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Sandslash-Alola Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Poliwrath: 68-81 (17.7 - 21%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery

0- Atk Mesprit U-turn vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Abomasnow: 134-158 (41.7 - 49.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Ludicolo Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Abomasnow: 125-148 (38.9 - 46.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Aurorus @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Blizzard
- Freeze-Dry
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power Rock

Poliwrath @ Leftovers
Impish Nature
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
- Scald
- Circle Throw
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

This core simply exploits one of rain's biggest pains in the neck, Scarf Aurorus. Poli can easily handle Kabutops and Snowslash(Qwil also gets phazed), while Aurorus nearly invalidates the rain matchup by removing the rain, killing/forcing out the abusers with Freeze Dry, and wearing down Mesprit and Volbeat to the point where they cant switch in anymore (Just watch out for Volbeat Twave and have removal for aqua jet)

Toilet cleaner @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Def / 16 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Soak
- Toxic
- Recover
- Protect / Counter

You might be thinking, "Why use Pyukumuku over Poliwrath?" The answer is obvious: Unaware. Sure, Poliwrath can comfortably handle Alolan Sandslash, Kabutops, and even unboosted Qwilfish to some degree. However, it falls to an Acid Downpour or Explosion from +2 Qwil. Pyukumuku doesn't have that problem because of Unaware. Therefore, Pyuku can stall out Kabutops, AlolaSlash, and Qwilfish indefinitely. I don't mean to diss Poliwrath, but Pyuku can also take on Mesprit.

252+ Atk Life Orb Kabutops Stone Edge vs. 240 HP / 252+ Def Pyukumuku: 129-152 (41.4 - 48.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Qwilfish Poison Jab vs. 240 HP / 252+ Def Unaware Pyukumuku: 70-84 (22.5 - 27%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Qwilfish Acid Downpour (160 BP) vs. 240 HP / 252+ Def Unaware Pyukumuku: 139-165 (44.6 - 53%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Qwilfish Explosion vs. 240 HP / 252+ Def Pyukumuku: 144-170 (46.3 - 54.6%) -- 8.2% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Mesprit Psychic vs. 240 HP / 16 SpD Pyukumuku: 79-94 (25.4 - 30.2%) -- 0.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252 Atk Sandslash-Alola Earthquake vs. 240 HP / 252+ Def Pyukumuku: 55-65 (17.6 - 20.9%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery

White Obama (Abomasnow) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Blizzard
- Energy Ball
- Giga Drain
- Focus Blast

Setting Hail upon switch-in, Scarf Abomasnow can OHKO Kabutops and 2HKO Qwilfish with Giga Drain. Aboma isn't too afraid of any of Ludicolo's moves; in contrast, both Ludicolo and Volbeat are 2HKOed by Blizzard. If AlolaSlash decides to come in, bring back out Pyuku. Otherwise, Focus Blast OHKOes it on the predicted switch.

252 SpA Abomasnow Blizzard vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Ludicolo: 142-168 (47.4 - 56.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after hail damage
252 SpA Abomasnow Blizzard vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Mesprit: 136-162 (37.3 - 44.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Abomasnow Blizzard vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Volbeat: 162-192 (48.5 - 57.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after hail damage
252 SpA Abomasnow Energy Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Qwilfish: 186-220 (68.6 - 81.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after hail damage
252+ SpA Life Orb Ludicolo Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Abomasnow: 113-134 (35.2 - 41.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Ludicolo Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Abomasnow: 125-147 (38.9 - 45.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Fun fact: Type: Null is the only non-resistant/non-immunized Pokemon in the entire tier that avoids the 2HKO from Modest Ludicolo's Life Orb boosted Hydro Pump in the rain.

In other words, specially defensive Clefairy, Audino, Articuno, Hitmonchan, and Musharna are all 2HKOed.

Guys, none of these are cores. They're just 2 individual Pokemon that rain struggles with that you slapped together, which kinda defeats the point of it all. Like I'd never base part of my team around any of these or consider them any kind of pairing. This is really just a flaw with choosing rain for a project like this because rain is something you normally beat with either your overall team being able to handle it or just a single Pokemon that counterteams it, but the point still stands. pogofish j0gurt m3po I'm not making you redo them or nullifying the submission or anything, just wanted the point out the flaw in these posts.

I won't deny that there could've been a more optimal build for this week, but it was still something I wanted to experiment with a bit!

Anyway, vote for your favorite submission! Voting will end on sunday, as I want to recalibrate and actually have this be a weekly process. n_n

pogofish's Abomasnow + Poliwrath
j0gurt's Aurorus + Poliwrath
m3po's Abomasnow + Pyukumuku

Congratulations to j0gurt for winning this week! Your submission will be logged into the archive shortly.

Week 7: CB Dodrio offense by Allstarapology
dodrio.gif

Here we are with the October drops! This team features the incredibly powerful Choice Band Dodrio alongside interesting spins on standard sets such as Toxtect Alolaslash and Special Z-Move Floatzel! Among the fast and powerful threats is a bulky team, with Pinch Berry Mudsdale, Gurdurr, and the aforementioned SpDef Alolaslash able to keep up with strong threats!

- Hidden Power [Rock]

Probopass @ Leftovers
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 172 HP / 252 SpA / 84 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock
- Earth Power
- Flash Cannon
- Taunt
Lilligant is definitely a bigger threat in the meta at the moment, and also threatens this team. Mudsdale and even Floatzel are threatened by Grass STAB and are prone to being set up on, while potentially putting Gurdurr and Alolan Sandslash to sleep. After a boost, Mesprit and Dodrio fail to outspeed, with Mesprit unable to put a dent into Lilligant with the boosted specia defense, and Dodrio dropping to a Hidden Power Rock. Gurdurr is also easily brokem through with Grassium Z after a boost. The biggest obstacle is Alolan Sandslash, eating up any grass moves and Hidden Power Rock, so Probopass is here to facilitate that weakness by removing Alolan Sandslash from the equation entirely. This particular set also gets completely walled by Probopass, lacking Earthquake or even Knock Off to annoy it. Probopass also provides Stealth Rock support and happens to wall this Dodrio because it lacks Jump Kick, and pivots into Mesprit without much issue.
Calcs coming soon owo

Togedemaru @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Zing Zap
- Iron Head
- U-turn
- Toxic

Mesprit @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Ice Beam
- U-turn
- Healing Wish

Pleb-tier VoltTurn core with great type synergy and good coverage. Scarf Toge wrecks this team as both Dodrio and Floatzel are outsped and OHKOed with Zing Zap, while Mesprit is hit hard by U-Turn and Snowslash can barely touch it. Toge's main issue is that it's walled by Gurdurr and Mudsdale. Enter Specs Mesprit, who OHKOes the former with Psychic and 2HKOes the latter with Ice Beam while taking negligible damage from Rock Slide. These two mons threaten the entire opposing team and can constantly keep momentum on your side.

Mr. Monopoly (Jellicent) @ Leftovers / Colbur Berry
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 240 HP / 160 Def / 8 SpD / 100 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hex
- Will-O-Wisp
- Taunt
- Recover

Jellicent defeats most of the Pokemon on this team. It walls Floatzel (HP Grass won't be doing too much) and shuts down AlolaSlash and Mudsdale with Taunt + Will-O-Wisp. Even though Gurdurr runs super effective Knock Off, Jellicent can Taunt it to prevent it from boosting while gradually wearing it down with Hex.

252 SpA Mesprit Psychic vs. 240 HP / 16 SpD Jellicent: 120-142 (29.9 - 35.4%) -- 27.5% chance to 3HKO
252 SpA Floatzel Hidden Power Grass vs. 240 HP / 16 SpD Jellicent: 94-112 (23.4 - 27.9%) -- 80.9% chance to 4HKO
56+ Atk Gurdurr Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 240 HP / 160+ Def Jellicent: 170-200 (42.3 - 49.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
56+ Atk Guts Gurdurr Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 240 HP / 160+ Def Jellicent: 252-298 (62.8 - 74.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
56+ Atk Mudsdale Earthquake vs. 240 HP / 160+ Def Jellicent: 150-177 (37.4 - 44.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Dodrio Brave Bird vs. 240 HP / 160+ Def Jellicent: 261-307 (65 - 76.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

0 SpA Jellicent Hex (130 BP) vs. 252 HP / 156 SpD Mudsdale: 118-139 (29.2 - 34.4%) -- 5.4% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery and burn damage
0 SpA Jellicent Hex (130 BP) vs. 252 HP / 208+ SpD Sandslash-Alola: 121-144 (34.1 - 40.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Underboss (Persian-Alola) @ Darkinium Z
Ability: Fur Coat
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Parting Shot
- Foul Play
- Taunt
- Toxic

Persian-Alola rounds out the defensive core, handling Mesprit nicely and Dodrio somewhat nicely. Alolan Persian tanks a Brave Bird from Dodrio on the switch and can KO it back with Foul Play. It also prevents Mesprit from tricking Jellicent the Choice Scarf. It too, can shut down AlolaSlash and Mudsdale with Taunt while rejuvenating Jelli with Z-Parting Shot.

252 Atk Choice Band Dodrio Brave Bird vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Fur Coat Persian-Alola: 195-231 (58.5 - 69.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (24.6 - 29.2% recoil damage)
252 Atk Choice Band Dodrio Return vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Fur Coat Persian-Alola: 166-196 (49.8 - 58.8%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO
